The Yorkshire Wolds are low hills in the counties of East Riding of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire in north-eastern England. The name also applies to the district in which the hills lie.
On the western edge the Wolds rise to an escarpment which then drops sharply to the Vale of York. The highest point on the escarpment is Bishop Wilton Wold (also known as Garrowby Hill), which is 807 feet (246 metres) above sea level. To the north, on the other side of the Vale of Pickering, lie the North York Moors, and to the east the hills flatten into the plain of Holderness.
The largest town in the Wolds is Driffield, with other places including Pocklington, Thixendale and Kilham, the original capital of the Wolds. The highest village on the Yorkshire Wolds is Fridaythorpe at 550 feet above sea level.
The hills are formed from chalk, and make an arc from the Humber estuary west of Hull up to the North Sea coast between Bridlington and Scarborough. Here they rise up to form cliffs, most notably at Flamborough, Bempton Cliffs and Filey; Flamborough Headland is designated a Heritage Coast. On the other side of the Humber, the chalk formations continue as the Lincolnshire Wolds; in fact, one can view the Humber as cutting through a single formation (see also Humber Gap). The Humber Bridge was built at the point due to its geological stability.
Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər/ or /ˈjɔːrkʃɪər/) is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.
Within the borders of the historic county of Yorkshire are areas which are widely considered to be among the greenest in England, due to the vast stretches of unspoiled countryside in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors and to the open aspect of some of the major cities. Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed "God's Own County" or "God's Own Country".
A 10 mile round walk starting at Fridaythorpe, East Riding. The walk heads south along the Yorkshire Wolds Way into Holm Dale and then joins Horse Dale. The route then continues south towards Huggate before bearing west and then leaves the Wolds Way and follows the route of the Chalkland Way back to Horse Dale and then towards Wold House Farm. After joining York Lane the route leaves the Chalkland Way and continues west towards the picnic area just off A166. From here the route heads north crossing the A166 into Wayrham Dale and then Bradeham Dale and then into Thixen Dale where the Yorkshire Wolds Way is joined again and followed back to Fridaythorpe through Brubber Dale. Archaeology students from the University of Hull have carried out an archaeological dig on the Yorkshire Wolds in East Yorkshire, over the summer of 2014. Students discovered a great amount of exciting finds at this Iron Age site including a miniature axe, a bone needle, pottery and – perhaps most exciting – an Arras burial. Hull and its surroundings is a region of superb archaeological wealth. There are few better regions in Britain to study archaeology. The countryside of Eastern Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire contains a wealth of archaeological remains, and its historic centres, such as Hull and Beverley, provide well preserved evidence for the development of medieval townscapes. For many students, fieldwork is one of the highlights of their degree, and at Hull we regard field teac...
A new film featuring footage of the Yorkshire Wolds taken over the past 20 years is to be screened in Beverley. It has been put together by East Riding Archives and Local Studies Service and will be shown at the Treasure House on Tuesday, August 23. The video tour travels across the countryside and takes in numerous villages that nestle among the hills. It is a chance for people to find out more about the scenery on their doorstep. Sam Bartle, Treasure House collections officer, said: "I grew up on the East Yorkshire Wolds, but this video presentation taught me all sorts of facts about villages that I thought I knew well." The video tour also makes brief stops at local events, such as the Kiplingcotes Derby and the Driffield Coin Scramble, and looks at a selection of local crafts in the ar...

East Yorkshire is a fascinating area - at one end of its coastline it has the shifting sandbar of Spurn Point and at the other end the 400ft high chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head. Both are a bird watchers' paradise. In between there are small seaside towns of Hornsea and Withernsea - under threat from coastal erosion. The main coastal town is Bridlinton. Inland are the rolling chalk hills of the Wolds. the county town is Beverley - a mini York, with is winding streets, Minster and Bar Gate. The film ends as Goole - a purpose built port dating to 1826. The main city is Hull - so important, that we have a seperate film on that!
