On the 10th October 1903 the Women’s Social and Political Union, whose members came to be known as suffragettes, was founded at the Manchester home of Sylvia and Emmeline Pankhurst. Frustrated by the lack of progress made by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies from whom the group had split, the WSPU soon became known for its militant and sometimes violent actions under the motto “Deeds, not words”.
The WSPU did not seek universal suffrage, rather votes for women on the same basis as votes for men. Considering many men at the time were denied the vote due to the property qualifications, the proposals by the WSPU were seen by some not as “votes for women” but “votes for ladies”. The WSPU even split from the Labour Party after Labour voted in favour of universal suffrage, leading the suffragettes to became more explicitly middle-class.
However, the actions of the suffragettes soon brought into question the traditional ideas of ladylike behavior as they were routinely arrested for various activities that were designed to shock the refined members of the establishment. It was to distinguish these actions from the more genteel suffrage groups that the Daily Mail newspaper reporter Charles Hands coined the term ‘suffragette’ to describe members of the WSPU.
Actions such as window breaking and arson routinely saw members of the WSPU imprisoned, where they would often go on hunger strike and be subjected to force-feeding by the authorities. However, the best known action is probably that of Emily Davison who was killed after stepping in front of the King’s horse at the 1913 Epsom Derby.

President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso warned on Wednesday that political instability is the biggest risk to Europe's future. He attacked his Eurosceptic critics and called for a stronger European Union.
Addressing the European Parliament in what most likely will be his last 'State of the Union' speech, Barroso urged EU leaders to continue implementing reforms, as the bloc slowly leans towards economic recovery.
"In the debate that is ongoing all across Europe, the bottom-line question is: Do we want to improve Europe, or give it up? My answer is clear: let's engage! If you don't like Europe as it is: improve it! Find ways to make it stronger, internally and internationally, and you will have in me the firmest of supporters. Find ways that allow for diversity without creating discriminations, and I will be with you all the way. But don't turn away from it."
"I believe a political Union must be our political horizon as I stressed last year in the State of the Union .This is not just a demand of a passionate European , this is an indispensable way forward to consolidate our progress and ensure the future." said EC's president Jose Manuel Barroso.
Barroso devoted part of his speech to defend the Union's answer to the crisis, as more and more citizens across Europe blame Brussels for their national economic problems.
He argued that the austerity measures taken in debt-ridden countries are now starting to have a positive effect. But MEPs warned that the crisis is not over yet.
"We have given a whole bunch, a whole range of early signs of recovery, but I think we have to make a realistic assessment, a realistic analysis of the situation. This first signs of recovery are more the proof of the fact that we hit the bottom of the recession, the bottom of the recession and that means that we enter in what I call a second phase of this crisis. I think it is far too easy only to see the negative points as has been done a few minutes ago, I think it is also not fair only to see the positive sides and say OK, it is over now, we are going up again, that it is not true, what we in fact see is a second phase in this crisis," said ALDE leader Guy Verhofstadt.
After 9 years in office as head of the EU's executive, this is Barroso's 4th 'State of the Union' speech.

A political union is a type of state which is composed of or created out of smaller states. The process is called unification. Unifications of states that used to be together and are reuniting is referred to as reunification. Unlike a personal union, the individual states share a central government and the union is recognized internationally as a single political entity. On the 10th October 1903 the Women’s Social and Political Union, whose members came to be known as suffragettes, was founded at the Manchester home of Sylvia and Emmeline Pankhurst. Frustrated by the lack of progress made by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies from whom the group had split, the WSPU soon became known for its militant and sometimes violent actions under the motto “Deeds, not words”. The WSPU did not seek universal suffrage, rather votes for women on the same basis as votes for men. Considering many men at the time were denied the vote due to the property qualifications, the proposals by the WSPU were seen by some not as “votes for women” but “votes for ladies”. Actions such as window breaking and arson routinely saw members of the WSPU imprisoned, where they would often go on hunger strike and be subjected to force-feeding by the authorities. "I believe a political Union must be our political horizon as I stressed last year in the State of the Union .This is not just a demand of a passionate European , this is an indispensable way forward to consolidate our progress and ensure the future." said EC's president Jose Manuel Barroso.
Barroso devoted part of his speech to defend the Union's answer to the crisis, as more and more citizens across Europe blame Brussels for their national economic problems.
He argued that the austerity measures taken in debt-ridden countries are now starting to have a positive effect. But MEPs warned that the crisis is not over yet.
"We have given a whole bunch, a whole range of early signs of recovery, but I think we have to make a realistic assessment, a realistic analysis of the situation. This first signs of recovery are more the proof of the fact that we hit the bottom of the recession, the bottom of the recession and that means that we enter in what I call a second phase of this crisis. I think it is far too easy only to see the negative points as has been done a few minutes ago, I think it is also not fair only to see the positive sides and say OK, it is over now, we are going up again, that it is not true, what we in fact see is a second phase in this crisis," said ALDE leader Guy Verhofstadt.
After 9 years in office as head of the EU's executive, this is Barroso's 4th 'State of the Union' speech.

President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso warned on Wednesday that political instability is the biggest risk to Europe's future. He attacked his Eurosceptic critics and called for a stronger European Union.
Addressing the European Parliament in what most likely will be his last 'State of the Union' speech, Barroso urged EU leaders to continue implementing reforms, as the bloc slowly leans towards economic recovery.
"In the debate that is ongoing all across Europe, the bottom-line question is: Do we want to improve Europe, or give it up? My answer is clear: let's engage! If you don't like Europe as it is: improve it! Find ways to make it stronger, internally and internationally, and you will have in me the firmest of supporters. Guest actors are (recognised personality) Emmeline Pankhurst herself and Mrs Harriet Stanton Blatch, President of the Women's political Union in the U.S. Mrs Pankhurst, especially, displays a wonderful talent for (silent) overacting. Films such as this one were made in response to a series of anti-suffragette movies made in the 1910s. The clip also contains actuality footage showing Suffragettes on a march through London and Mrs Pankhurst speaking to crowds in Trafalgar Square.

The Amherst Political Union is proud to present Egyptian Feminist and Journalist Mona Eltahawy. The title of Ms. Eltahawy's lecture was: Bringing The Revolution Home, Challenging the Patriarch in the Presidential Palace and in the Bedroom. Ms. Eltahawy has distinguished herself as a prominent and prolific journalist, covering mainly women's rights in the Middle East. Furthermore, Ms. Eltahawy was an active participant in the Egyptian Revolution during which she was detained and sexually assaulted by the Egyptian Military. This event took place on October 16th, 2014.
