PCC Matthew Ellis visits Lichfield #21seconds
Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis heard about the issues that matter to Lichfield people during a day in the city yesterday (Thurs). Mr Ellis spoke to shoppers at two 'Let's Talk' supermarket surgeries in the city before hosting a public meeting for people from across Lichfield district later in the day. He spent an hour at Tesco in Church Street before travelling to Waitrose in Darwin Park, listening to the concerns of local people. At the meeting at Lichfield District Council house in Frog Lane he outlined his vision for policing and the criminal justice system to over 30 people who asked questions on a range of topics including Neighbourhood Watch, parking and police officer numbers. The Commissioner talked about his plans to free up thousands of hours of local visible policing a week through investment in mobile technology for officers. During the day, Mr Ellis also heard first-hand from domestic violence victims at a session organised by the Pathway Project and other support agencies. He then met with staff from the Staffordshire Buddies scheme and heard about their work to tackle hate crime around transgender issues. Coordinators of the Lichfield Townsafe scheme outlined their partnership work with local businesses to reduce crime across the city. Mr Ellis said: "It was a really good day in Lichfield. I was heartened at the supermarket surgeries at Tesco and Waitrose that so many people already knew about the work we're doing. "There were also great meetings with local service workers and a big meeting on domestic violence which showed there's still a lot of work to do in that area. "Lichfield people came out in force and over 200 were spoken to or given information, which made it a thoroughly enjoyable day." Surprise $88k Bank Deposit Sends British Woman on Shopping Spree
Surprise $88k Bank Deposit Sends British Woman on Shopping Spree
Usually April Fools day calls for pranks and general hoaxes of all kinds, but in April of 2013 one British woman, 23-year-old single mom Michaela Hutchings, got a very real surprise in her bank account. Hutchings was shocked to find an additional $88,000 deposited into her account with no one's apparent knowledge except herself. As it turned out the Lichfield District Council, in Staffordshire, had accidentally transferred the large sum into her account instead of into the account of a housing association. Faced with the decision to let her bank know about the snafu or keep quiet, Hutchings chose the latter. However, not only did she keep her newfound riches on the down low but she also quickly spent $8,000 on various items such as sunglasses, shoes and handbags from posh brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Ralph Lauren. After Hutchings massive spending spree she took a less consumerist turn and handed over $1,700 to her mother, paid off $1,700 in court costs and then moved the rest of the money, $68,000, into an investment account, which was based on advice she received from the bank who at that time did not know about the error. Not surprisingly the boneheads over at Lichfield District Council soon realized their huge "clerical" mistake and contacted the authorities. Hutchings ended up pleading guilty this past March to "retaining a wrongly credited bank transfer." Her punishment was "150 hours of unpaid work" and "a 12-month community order" which consists of following a curfew, possible community service and any treatment etc. However, this past Tuesday Hutchings was given six months to repay the entire amount or she would be thrown in the clink for 20 months. All of the clothing and other items Hutchings bought is going to be sold to put towards the amount she still owes, which is around $10,000. After her conviction in March Hutchings made the statement "anyone would have done the same...put yourself in my shoes." Is that true? How many 23-year-olds can say they would have told their bank about the nearly $100k deposited into their account? Would you? Also, Hutchings was either extremely naive or stupid to think she would get away with it, considering the bank could track where the money came from, who's account it was deposited into and see what happened to the money after it landed in Hutchings account. Greed and youth was the perfect combination for poor decision making. Good thing Hutchings is a mother! sources: http://bit.ly/1qauqNt http://dailym.ai/1vorSdS- published: 30 Jun 2014
