Muhammadu Buhari (born December 17, 1942) was a Major General in the Nigerian Army and a former military ruler of Nigeria from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985. He also ran unsuccessfully for the office of the President of Nigeria in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. His ethnic background is Fulani, and his faith is Islam; he is a native of Daura in Katsina State of Nigeria.
Major-General Buhari was selected to lead the country by middle and high-ranking military officers after a successful military coup d'etat that overthrew civilian PresidentShehu Shagari on December 31, 1983. At the time, Buhari was head of the Third Armored Division of Jos. Buhari was appointed Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and Tunde Idiagbon was appointed Chief of General Staff (the de facto No. 2 in the administration). Buhari justified the military's seizure of power by castigating the civilian government as hopelessly corrupt, and his administration subsequently initiated a public campaign against indiscipline known as "War Against Indiscipline" (WAI). Aspects of this campaign included public humiliation of civil servants who arrived late for work whilst guards were armed with whips to ensure orderly queues at bus stops.

This is part one of the exclusive interview with Nigeria's President-Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as he sits with TVC News; unveiling his plans for Nigeria ahead of Handover in May 29th.
Gen. Muhammadu Buhari Interviewed by CNN’s Christiane Amanpour
Gen. Muhammadu Buhari was interviewed by CNN’s Christiane Amanpour tonight. The nine minute session started with a clip of a just-concluded media chat with Goodluck Jonathan focusing on his promise to fight Boko Haram.
Christiane Amanpour began by asking Muhammadu Buhari about his reaction to the six-week delay in the elections, and what he feels about Jonathan’s comments on fighting Boko Haram.
Buhari said he is disppointed because INEC had decided on the February 14th date a year ago, but since the shift in date is in line with the constitution, he has spoken to his supporters to remain calm and resolute and obey the law.
On the question of why the Nigerian military has failed to combat the terrorist organisation, Boko Haram, Buhari said their failure was made clear when the National Assembly attempted to conduct a hearing by getting the budget approved for the military over the past three years, following an allegation made by some military officers who granted interviews to foreign media that they were sent to battle fronts without proper weapons.
The National Assembly queried the military chiefs on why weapons were not procured and sent to the officers, but the hearing was cut, and this remains why the military has been unable to combat Boko Haram.
On his feelings regarding the endorsement by Olusegun Obasanjo, Buhari accepts that Obasanjo is highly respected and is always consulted on serious issues in Nigeria, and so his endorsement means more support for the APC.
On how the world media portrays him as a dictator who ruled thirty years ago, who restricted free speech, jailed thousands, executed those whose offences weren’t at that time capital offences and expelled 700, 000 immigrants just to create jobs; if he is still that person and if that personality of a dictator is what Nigerians should expect, Buhari accepts that the portrayal of him was “the degree of accuracy of what actually happened.”
But that was a military administration, that he can’t be that harsh person anymore under this present multi-pparty democratic system.
On what he can do to combat Boko Haram and the present galloping corruption, Buhari said that Boko Haram gained power due to the failure of the Nigerian military, and that it is a great embarrassment to a military which used to be highly respected internationally. He promised that if he wins, the money voted for security, procurement of weapons and training will be properly utilised.
On corruption, if he is committed to rooting out corruption, he said that there is a popular saying that if Nigeria doesn’t kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria.
And to illustrate, he cited the hearing conducted by the National Assembly on pension fund and electric power and the corruption in the petroleum industry, that their report and recommendation has remained untouched and is collecting dusts. He is dedicated to fighting corruption.
And that ended the brief interview.

CNN INTERVIEW WITH NIGERIA'S PRESIDENT ELECT: GENERAL MUHAMMADU BUHARI
The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari has expressed confidence in his ability to win the upcoming 2015 elections. The former Head of State, who has contested four times for the country’s number one office, gave reasons as to why the next elections would seal the deal for him. He stated this and more during an interview with Weekly Trust. Excerpts below:
Weekly Trust: This is your fourth stab at the presidency. Is there any factor that makes you feel this attempt will be any different? Muhammadu Buhari: Yes. The first is the merger which gave birth to the APC itself. Since 2005, we realized that none of the opposition parties can go up against the PDP significantly. The party has no intention of ruling this country with justice, as we have seen in the sixteen years they have been around.
For example, on the side of the economy, look at the Nigerian Airways, the railways and shipping line, where are they? Look at the expenditure on NEPA and the hearing conducted by the National Assembly on it. Then look at pension funds and the petroleum industry. The list is long.
There is no way they can tell you that there has been an honest attempt to punish corruption on a massive scale in this country. Secondly, out of ethical behaviour, Nigerian soldiers started granting interviews to foreign media, saying they were being sent to the warfront without proper weapons. And again the National Assembly attempted to conduct a hearing by going to find out what is being appropriated to the military or the Ministry of Defence for the last three, four years, which amounts to trillions of naira. And they invited the service chiefs or Chief of Defence Staff to tell them what is happening to the money, but that hearing was frustrated.
WT: You’ve been in the race for the presidency for over a decade now. Some people feel that as one of the pillars of the merger, you should have sacrificed your ambition so that a younger generation would aspire...

Muhammadu Buhari .(The Full Story-55mins)
This is about the only true story of Muhammadu Buhari..the official one is...Muhammadu Buhari....Born on December 17, 1942 in Katsina state, Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari is a Nigerian politician who served as the military ruler of Nigeria (December 31, 1983 - August 27, 1985).
In 1983, Major-General Buhari and Major-General Tunde Idiagbon were selected to lead the country by middle and high-ranking military officers after a successful military coup d'etat that overthrew civilian President Shehu Shagari on December.
In 1985, Buhari was himself overthrown in a coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida on August 27th, and other members of the ruling Supreme Military Council (SMC) ostensibly, because he insisted on investigating allegations of fraudulent award of contracts in the Ministry of Defence (Please refer to Gen. Chris Alli's memoir - The Republic of Nigerian Army).
Buhari contested the Presidential election as the candidate of the All Nigeria People's Party on 2003...On 18th December 2006, Gen. Buhari was nominated as the consensus candidate of the All Nigeria People's Party.
His main challenger in the 2007 April polls was the ruling PDP's Umaru Yar'Adua, who is also from the same state - Katsina and he lost. In March 2010, Buhari left the ANPP for the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), a party that he had helped to found.
