LiDAR can be considered an acronym for Light Detection and Ranging. It is a remote sensing technology that's used to measure distances, and it doesn't act on its own. It actually -- LIDAR typically includes three independently operating technologies. There's LiDAR, which is essentially a giant laser ranging device. The laser-ranging device sends out millions of pulses. Today, they can send out over 400,000 pulses in one second. That technology gives you the distance or the range to the target and there are two other technologies: GPS, which is Global Positioning System, or global navigations systems, that give you the location of the instrument that's holding the LiDAR sensor. The third technology is the initial measurement unit, which is an IMU system and that system is used to measure the pitch, roll, and heading of, for example, an airborne platform. It could also be installed on a installed on a mobile platform like a car or vehicle on the road, or it could be a terrestrially mounted LiDAR system such as those mounted on a tripod. The reason why sometimes LiDAR is the preferred technology to use is that it can map the bare root beneath vegetation better than most other technologies can.

This video is an overview of the Phoenix Aerial AL3-16 LiDAR Mapping system. The AL3-16 can be mounted on any UAV that can lift 2.5kgs. In this video, a DJI S1000 is used and for the demonstration, we flew over an over an open pit. You can see how quickly we generate a dense pointcloud. You'll also see how LiDAR can pick up points underneath vegetation vs Photogrammetry will only map tree canopy.

Lidar
Lidar (also written LIDAR, LiDAR or LADAR) is a surveying technology that measures distance by illuminating a target with a laser light. Although thought by some to be an acronym of Light Detection And Ranging, the term lidar was actually created as a portmanteau of "light" and "radar". Lidar is popularly used as a technology to make high-resolution maps, with applications in geodesy, geomatics, archaeology, geography, geology, geomorphology, seismology, forestry, atmospheric physics, airborne laser swath mapping (ALSM) and laser altimetry. What is known as Lidar is sometimes simply referred to as laser scanning or 3D scanning, with terrestrial, airborne and mobile applications.
History and etymology
Lidar originated in the early 1960s, shortly after the invention of the laser, and combined laser-focused imaging with radar's ability to calculate distances by measuring the time for a signal to return. Its first applications came in meteorology, where the National Center for Atmospheric Research used it to measure clouds. The general public became aware of the accuracy and usefulness of lidar systems in 1971 during the Apollo 15 mission, when astronauts used a laser altimeter to map the surface of the moon.

Director of Remote Sensing Amar Nayegandhi explains the science and technology behind Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) services.
Transcription:
LiDAR can be considered an acronym for Light Detection and Ranging. It is a remote sensing technology that's used to measure distances, and it doesn't act on its own. It actually -- LIDAR typically includes three independently operating technologies. There's LiDAR, which is essentially a giant laser ranging device. The laser-ranging device sends out millions of pulses. Today, they can send out over 400,000 pulses in one second. That technology gives you the distance or the range to the target and there are two other technologies: GPS, which is Global Positioning System, or global navigations systems, that give you the location of the instrument that's holding the LiDAR sensor. The third technology is the initial measurement unit, which is an IMU system and that system is used to measure the pitch, roll, and heading of, for example, an airborne platform. It could also be installed on a installed on a mobile platform like a car or vehicle on the road, or it could be a terrestrially mounted LiDAR system such as those mounted on a tripod. The reason why sometimes LiDAR is the preferred technology to use is that it can map the bare root beneath vegetation better than most other technologies can.

The LIDAR Lite is ideal when used in drone, robot, or unmanned vehicle situations where you need a reliable and powerful proximity sensor but don’t possess a lot of space. All you need to communicate with this sensor is a standard I2C or PWM interface and the LIDAR Lite, with its range of up to 40 meters, will be yours to command!
