PETE TERRACE ~ The Jamaican
This compelling 1957 recording of "The Jamaican (El Jamaiquino)" is among the many curious recordings one finds in the Tico Records catalog. The album, "Ask Me To Cha Cha Cha" (Tico Lp-1040), swings nice and easy with a guitar and trumpet combination not unlike La Playa Sextet. The cover says the band features 'The Latin Boys: under the direction of Peter Gutierrez' which, as it happens, is the given name of the very popular bandleader, percussionist and vibraphonist PETE TERRACE.
Born Pedro Gutierrez, Pete Terrace was born on February 6, 1927 in New York City, and returning with his family to Puerto Rico shortly thereafter. In 1936, his father, Ramon Gutierrez, accepted a job hosting a radio program in New York City, and is reputed to be the City's first true Latin music radio DJ. Return...

Given name
A given name (also known as a personal name, first name, forename, or Christian name), is a part of a person's full nomenclature. It identifies a specific person, and differentiates that person from other members of a group, such as a family or clan, with whom that person shares a common surname. The term given name refers to the fact that the name is bestowed upon, or given to a child, usually by its parents, at or near the time of birth. This contrasts with a surname (also known as a family name, last name, or gentile name), which is normally inherited, and shared with other members of the child's immediate family.
Given names are often used in a familiar and friendly manner in informal situations. In more formal situations the surname is more commonly used, unless it is necessary to dis...

Peter plays an important role in the crucifixion: he is the denier. It is one of those times when he couldn't seem live up to his nickname (Peter means "Rock"). Simon is his given name. He is absolutely certain that he will stand by Jesus until death. Given a chance to claim his connection to Jesus three times on eve of the crucifixion, Simon denies knowing Jesus; he even "curses" in the last denial. The realization of what he had done nearly broke Simon; the key word here is "nearly." So, what can we learn about being followers from Simon, the denier? Join us Sunday at 11AM Eastern as we explore where we might see ourselves in Simon Peter.

Returning to NYC as a teenager, Gutierrez began studying percussion and began performing with bands such as the 'Sensamaya Kids" and Juanito Sanabria. Honorably discharged after 18 months drumming for the 442nd Army Band in Paris during WWII, Terrace returned to New York City in 1947, and enrolled at Juilliard on the G.I. Bill, earning a living working with the bands of Ramon Argueso, Ralph Font, Bartolo Hernandez, and the young Tito Rodriguez. As the drummer for the Julio Andino orchestra, he befriended musical director Jose (Joe Loco) Estevez, joining the latter's popular new mambo quintet in 1952, showcasing his skills on the vibes. Though three of Joe Loco's albums on Fantasy were released under Terrace's name due to the former's contract with Tico, Terrace's true debut recording as a leader was a big hit: the 1956 Tico album "A Night in Mambo Jazzland" (with arrangements by Charlie Palmieri on one side, and "Mambo Inn" composer Edgar Sampson on the other). These and subsequent Tico recordings by Terrace are considered gems of the mid-1950's when Terrace was often cited among the top 5 bands on the New York Latin music scene (right in line behind 'The Big 3' - Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and Machito - and La Playa Sextet). Terrace continued to record throughout the 1960's on labels such as Colpix, Strand and Scepter, even starting his own label, Mio. Returning to Juilliard in 1964, Terrace earned a B.A., and ultimately an M.A. in Science in 1968. After yet another successful turn at the bandstand during the boogaloo era with hits like "Here Comes Pete", Terrace retired as a bandleader, but continued as a successful music instructor and executive in the tourism industry.
With a couple of rare exceptions, like the other posts on the 'Metro Mambo Channel' this is this tune's first appearance on YouTube. To hear more from the "Metro Mambo" collection, tune-in for The Latin Flavor Classic Edition, on Washington DC's WPFW 89.3 FM, Live-streaming Sundays from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. EST on www.WPFWFM.ORG

In more formal situations the surname is more commonly used, unless it is necessary to distinguish between people with the same surname. The idioms "on a first-name basis" and "being on first-name terms" allude to the familiarity of addressing another by a given name.
