Louis G. Dunn (1908-1979) was a South African-born engineer who played a key role in the development of early American missiles and launch vehicles.

Caltech

Dunn received both undergraduate and graduate degrees in aeronautical engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA. During that time the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at Caltech (GALCIT), a prestigious aeronatuical engineering research facility, was led by Theodore von Kármán. By 1943 Dunn had joined the Caltech faculty and become a naturalized U.S. citizen.

JPL

In 1943 and 1944, von Kármán and Frank Malina, who had been doing rocket research at GALCIT, began using Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the names of their projects. Malina hired Dunn to be the assistant director of JPL in 1945. Dunn took over as acting director when Malina left and was formally appointed as director in 1947. Dunn resigned from this position in 1954. William Hayward Pickering, who had been project manager for the Corporal missile under Dunn, succeeded him as JPL director.

Ramo-Woolridge and Aerojet General

After leaving JPL Dunn led the Atlas missile program at the Ramo-Woolridge Corporation, a predecessor of TRW. In 1963 he moved to Aerojet General, and he died in 1979.

Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis, Jr. (born May 27, 1935) is an American jazz composer, pianist and radio personality. Ramsey Lewis has recorded over 80 albums and has received seven gold records and three Grammy Awards so far in his career.

Biography

Ramsey Lewis was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Ramsey Lewis, Sr. and Pauline Lewis. Lewis began taking piano lessons at the age of four. At 15 he joined his first jazz band, The Cleffs. The seven-piece group provided Lewis his first involvement with jazz; he would later join Cleffs drummer Isaac "Redd" Holt and bassist Eldee Young to form the Ramsey Lewis Trio. Lewis is a graduate of DePaul University.

The trio started as primarily a jazz unit and released their first album, ''Ramsey Lewis And The Gentlemen of Swing'', in 1956. Following their 1965 hit "The In Crowd" (the single reached #5 on the pop charts, and the album #2) they concentrated more on pop material. Young and Holt left in 1966 to form Young-Holt Unlimited and were replaced by Cleveland Eaton and Maurice White. White left to form Earth, Wind & Fire was replaced by Maurice Jennings in 1970. Later, Frankie Donaldson and Bill Dickens replaced Jennings and Eaton; Felton Crews also appeared on many 1980's releases.

By 1966, Lewis was one of the nation’s most successful jazz pianists, topping the charts with "The In Crowd", "Hang On Sloopy", and "Wade in the Water". All three singles each sold over one million copies, and were awarded gold discs. Many of his recordings attracted a large non-jazz audience. In the 1970s, Lewis often played electric piano, although by later in the decade he was sticking to acoustic and using an additional keyboardist in his groups.

In addition to recording and performing, Lewis hosted a morning show on Chicago "smooth jazz" radio station WNUA (95.5 FM) until May 22, 2009. His weekly syndicated radio program ''Legends of Jazz'', created in 1990, features recordings from artists such as David Sanborn, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Kurt Elling, Al Jarreau and Miles Davis. The show can be heard in 60 U.S. cities and overseas. In 1994, Lewis appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation album, Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool, alongside other prominent jazz artists, Herbie Hancock and Roy Ayers. The album, meant to raise awareness and funds in support of the AIDS epidemic in relation to the African American community, was heralded as "Album of the Year" by Time Magazine.

On December 4, 2006, the ''Ramsey Lewis Morning Show'' became part of Broadcast Architecture's Smooth Jazz Network, simulcasting on other Smooth Jazz stations across the country for the first time. However, the show was still based in Chicago until it was cancelled when WNUA switched over to a Spanish format.

In 2006, a well-received 13-episode ''Legends of Jazz'' television series hosted by Lewis was broadcast on public TV nationwide and featured live performances by a variety of jazz artists including Larry Gray, Lonnie Smith, Joey Defrancesco, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Kurt Elling, Benny Golson, Pat Metheny and Tony Bennett. Lewis is artistic director of Jazz at Ravinia (an annual feature at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois) and helped organize Ravinia's Jazz Mentor Program. Ramsey also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Merit School of Music, a Chicago inner-city music program and The Chicago High School for the Arts, the new public arts high school in Chicago. Early in 2005, the Ramsey Lewis Foundation was created to help connect at-risk children to the world of music. As an offshoot of that foundation, Lewis plans to form a Youth Choir and Youth Orchestra. In January 2007, the Dave Brubeck Institute invited Lewis to join its Honorary Board of Friends at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Lewis is an Honorary Board member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Lewis is a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. In May 2008, Lewis received an honorary doctorate from Loyola University Chicago upon delivering the keynote address at the undergraduate commencement ceremony.

Lewis still lives in Chicago, Illinois, the city of his musical roots. He has seven children, fourteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Chanel Iman Robinson (born December 1, 1990), known professionally as Chanel Iman, is an American fashion model perhaps best known for her work for Victoria's Secret.

Early life

Iman was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 1, 1990. She grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her mother is co-owner of "The Red Bag Boutique" in Los Angeles with her. Her mother is half Korean. Her father is African American.

Career

Iman started modeling with Ford Models at the age of 13 as a child model in Los Angeles, California. She flew to New York in 2006 and won third place in Ford's Supermodel of the World contest. Shortly after, she signed on with the agency. ''The New York Times'' wrote a feature article on her, "A Model from Day 1," in which Iman explained that she wanted to be a model her entire life. She was presented on the May 2007 cover of American ''Vogue'' as one of the “World’s Next Top Models.” Style.com also featured Iman as a rising star in 2007. The same year she attended fashion's biggest gala, The Met Ball, where she was named Vogue's second Best Dressed of the Week in her sleeveless Zac Posen dress. In February and July she appeared on the cover of ''Teen Vogue'', with Karlie Kloss and Ali Michael, photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, then in November 2009 she appeared on the cover again, this time with Jourdan Dunn. Iman's other covers include Italian ''Elle'', ''i-D'', Dubai and Ukrainian ''Harper's Bazaar'', ''Lula'', Korean, Teen, and American ''Vogue''. She has walked the runway for fashion houses and designers including Balenciaga, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, and Stella McCartney. She has appeared in editorials for ''Allure'', Dubai, American, and Ukrainian ''Harpers Bazaar'', ''V'', ''i-D'', ''Pop'', Italian, British, and Indonesian ''Elle'', Italian ''Vanity Fair'', and several international ''Vogues''. Lil Louis is the stage name used by Chicago-born house-music producer and DJ Louis Sims. He scored a number of hits on the ''Billboard'' Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in the 1980s and 1990s, three of which hit #1.

His best known song, "French Kiss," featured vocals by Shawn Christopher and spent two weeks at #1 on the dance chart in 1989. The track features a several-minutes-long breakdown in which the music gradually slowed down in tempo to a stop. Even with its sensual sound, it crossed over to some pop radio stations and climbed to #50 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was a big success throughout Europe reaching #2 in the UK Singles Chart and in Germany, and number one in the Netherlands.

The video was directed by Marek Budzynski

Laurent Garnier's 1997 12" single "Flashback" contained a remix made by Lil Louis called "Lil Louis Civilized Instrumental Painting."

British Jungle/Drum 'n' Bass producer Ed Rush remixed the track "French Kiss".

In 2000, fellow producer Josh Wink released "How's Your Evening So Far?"—credited to Wink vs. Lil Louis—a track that heavily sampled "French Kiss." The song peaked at #3 on the dance chart. The song was also sampled in 2000 by female hip hop emcee Lil' Kim on the track "Custom Made (Give It To You)," which was featured on ''The Notorious KIM''.

Louis also released albums under the names Li'l Louis & the World and Li'l Louis & the Party.

In the track "Teachers" from the ''Homework'' album by Daft Punk, Lil' Louis is one of the many musicians mentioned.
