You may have heard the word "Server" thrown around regularly by IT geeks and your cousin who is awesome with computers. Servers are really not much different than your run of the mill computers and this video explains the difference between the two.
A server is essentially a computer with software designed to perform a specific "serving" function to other computers. This function can be thousands of different types of serving such as websites, video, music or any other form of data.
The function of a computer server is best illustrated with an analogy. When you are at a restaurant, you have a server and a customer. In the world of computers the server is still called a server, but a customer is called a "client".
The client issues a request to the server, such as "I would like to see the website Google.com please." This request to the server is sent through their web browser. The server receives the request and is able to return the page Google.com because it has software installed on it to handle those requests.
Just as a server at a restaurant, the server is only designed to handle specific requests. It wouldn't do you much good to ask your server for a steak if they only serve pasta. The same goes for computer servers, if they receive a request they are not designed to handle, they respectfully let you know it's not possible.
A server, in this sense, is just another computer with software installed on it to handle specific requests. Now IT and engineers learned that if they dedicate a computer to a single serving task that it will perform that task much more efficiently. So they began to build hardware and software combinations for specific functions.
A server that is designed and engineered to perform only a few tasks is known as a "dedicated server". These servers are dedicated to a single task and do that task extremely well.
Many people do not realize they can turn their home computer into a server very easily. They simply need to install software on it to handle specific requests. Once the software is installed, they can then issue requests to their own computer and their own computer will respond properly.
Self-serving servers, or "localhost" servers, are servers that are also clients. These are extremely popular for web designers who want to test their webpage while they are designing it. If their computer is also a server, they can have their own computer serve them the webpage for troubleshooting.

A server provides services to other computers on a network. A server can be an expensive Windows 2008 Server, or a simple Windows XP Home computer with a shared printer.
Operating System

Server (computing)
A server is a computer program or a device that waits for requests from other devices or software (called "clients") and responds to them. A server typically processes data. The purpose of a server is to share data or resources among clients. The clients may run on the same computer or may connect to the server over a network. Typical computing servers are database servers, file servers, mail servers, print servers, web servers, game servers, and application servers. Designating a computer as "server-class hardware" implies that it is more powerful and reliable than standard personal computers or is specialized for performing the server's role. Servers may be composed of large clusters of relatively simple, replaceable machines.
History
The use of the word server in computing comes from queuing theory, where it dates to the mid 20th century, being notably used in Kendall (1953) (along with "service"), the paper that introduced Kendall's notation. In earlier papers, such as the Erlang (1909), more concrete terms such as "[telephone] operators" are used.

Operating system
An operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs. Operating systems are found on many devices that contain a computer – from cellular phones and video game consoles to web servers and supercomputers.
Examples of popular desktop operating systems include Apple OS X, Linux and its variants, and Microsoft Windows. So-called mobile operating systems include Android and iOS.

A server is essentially a computer with software designed to perform a specific "serving" function to other computers. This function can be thousands of different types of serving such as websites, video, music or any other form of data.
The function of a computer server is best illustrated with an analogy. When you are at a restaurant, you have a server and a customer. In the world of computers the server is still called a server, but a customer is called a "client".
The client issues a request to the server, such as "I would like to see the website Google.com please." This request to the server is sent through their web browser. The server receives the request and is able to return the page Google.com because it has software installed on it to handle those requests.
Just as a server at a restaurant, the server is only designed to handle specific requests. It wouldn't do you much good to ask your server for a steak if they only serve pasta. The same goes for computer servers, if they receive a request they are not designed to handle, they respectfully let you know it's not possible.
A server, in this sense, is just another computer with software installed on it to handle specific requests. Now IT and engineers learned that if they dedicate a computer to a single serving task that it will perform that task much more efficiently. So they began to build hardware and software combinations for specific functions.
A server that is designed and engineered to perform only a few tasks is known as a "dedicated server". These servers are dedicated to a single task and do that task extremely well.

A server is essentially a computer with software designed to perform a specific "serving" function to other computers. This function can be thousands of different types of serving such as websites, video, music or any other form of data.
The function of a computer server is best illustrated with an analogy. When you are at a restaurant, you have a server and a customer. In the world of computers the server is still called a server, but a customer is called a "client".
The client issues a request to the server, such as "I would like to see the website Google.com please." This request to the server is sent through their web browser. The server receives the request and is able to return the page Google.com because it has software installed on it to handle those requests.
Just as a server at a restaurant, the server is only designed to handle specific requests. It wouldn't do you much good to ask your server for a steak if they only serve pasta. The same goes for computer servers, if they receive a request they are not designed to handle, they respectfully let you know it's not possible.
A server, in this sense, is just another computer with software installed on it to handle specific requests. Now IT and engineers learned that if they dedicate a computer to a single serving task that it will perform that task much more efficiently. So they began to build hardware and software combinations for specific functions.
A server that is designed and engineered to perform only a few tasks is known as a "dedicated server". These servers are dedicated to a single task and do that task extremely well.
Many people do not realize they can turn their home computer into a server very easily. They simply need to install software on it to handle specific requests. Once the software is installed, they can then issue requests to their own computer and their own computer will respond properly.

A server provides services to other computers on a network. A server can be an expensive Windows 2008 Server, or a simple Windows XP Home computer with a shared printer.
Operating System
Server Operating Systems are more stable and secure then Desktop operating Systems
Server Operating Systems and their Software are generally much more expensive then Desktop counterparts
Server Operating Systems are generally not as easy to administer as Desktop Operating Systems
Hardware
A Server can use ANY hardware to operate, but Server Hardware is made to be more reliable then desktop hardware.
Xeon Processors are standard processors used in servers
Redundant Power Supply allow one power Supply to Fail while the Server is Still Running

Eric David Harris was born in Wichita, Kansas. The Harris family relocated often, as Eric's father, Wayne Harris, was a U.S. Air Force transport pilot. His mother, Katherine Ann Poole, was a homemaker. The family moved from Plattsburgh, New York, to Littleton, Colorado, in July 1993, when Wayne Harris retired from military service.
The Harris family lived in rented accommodations for the first three years that they lived in the Littleton area. During this time, Eric met Dylan Klebold. In 1996, the Harris family purchased a house south of Columbine High School. Eric's older brother, Kevin, attended college at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Dylan Klebold
Dylan Bennet Klebold was born in Lakewood, Colorado, to Thomas and Susan Klebold (née Yassenoff). His parents attended a Lutheran church with their children, and Dylan and his older brother, Byron, attended confirmation classes in accordance with Lutheran tradition. At home, the family also observed some rituals in keeping with Klebold's maternal grandfather's Russian heritage. Klebold attended Normandy Elementary in Littleton, Colorado for the first two grades before transferring to Governor's Ranch Elementary and became part of the CHIPS ("Challenging High Intellectual Potential Students") program. He found the transition to Ken Caryl Middle School difficult.
At Columbine High, Harris and Klebold were active in school play productions, operated video productions and became computer assistants maintaining the school's computer server.
According to early accounts of the shooting, Harris and Klebold were very unpopular students and targets of bullying. While sources do support accounts of bullying directed toward the pair, accounts of them being outcasts have been reported to be false.
Harris and Klebold were initially reported to be members of a group that called themselves the "Trenchcoat Mafia", although in truth they had no particular connection with the group, and did not appear in a group photo of the Trenchcoat Mafia in the 1998 Columbine yearbook. Harris's father stated that his son was "a member of what they call the Trenchcoat Mafia" in a 911 call he made on April 20, 1999. Klebold attended the high school prom three days before the shootings with a classmate named Robyn Anderson.
Harris and Klebold linked their personal computers on a network and both played many games over the Internet. Harris created a set of levels for the game Doom, which later became known as the Harris levels. Harris had a web presence under the handle "REB" (short for Rebel, a nod to the nickname of Columbine's sports teams) and other cyber aliases, including "Rebldomakr", "Rebdoomer", and "Rebdomine", while Klebold went by the names "VoDKa" and "VoDkA".
Harris had various websites that hosted Doom and Quake files, as well as team information for those he gamed with online. The sites openly espoused hatred for the people of their neighborhood and the world in general. When the pair began experimenting with pipe bombs, they posted results of the explosions on the websites. The website was shut down by America Online after the shootings and was preserved for the FBI.

Harris and Klebold were initially reported to be members of a group that called themselves the "Trenchcoat Mafia", although in truth they had no particular connection with the group, and did not appear in a group photo of the Trenchcoat Mafia in the 1998 Columbine yearbook. Harris's father stated that his son was "a member of what they call the Trenchcoat Mafia" in a 911 call he made on April 20, 1999. Klebold attended the high school prom three days before the shootings with a classmate named Robyn Anderson.
Harris and Klebold linked their personal computers on a network and both played many games over the Internet. Harris created a set of levels for the game Doom, which later became known as the Harris levels. Harris had a web presence under the handle "REB" (short for Rebel, a nod to the nickname of Columbine's sports teams) and other cyber aliases, including "Rebldomakr", "Rebdoomer", and "Rebdomine", while Klebold went by the names "VoDKa" and "VoDkA".
Harris had various websites that hosted Doom and Quake files, as well as team information for those he gamed with online. The sites openly espoused hatred for the people of their neighborhood and the world in general. When the pair began experimenting with pipe bombs, they posted results of the explosions on the websites. The website was shut down by America Online after the shootings and was preserved for the FBI.
