With around three hundred and twenty thousand inhabitants Catania is the second largest city in Sicily. Its historical significance is clearly visible throughout the city’s magnificent old district that is dominated by Baroque architecture. The city has few monuments that pre date the Baroque Period but it was not wars or battles that were responsible for this but a volcano that towers high above the island and that is located thirty kilometres from Catania: Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano has destroyed this city more than once. On the Ionic Sea in the south east of Sicily is Syracusa that in ancient times was a legendary city state. Greek settlers from Corinth founded the city in 734 B.C. and it soon enjoyed much fame and prosperity. South of Agrigento is the ancient sanctuary of the Valle Dei Templi, the legendary Valley Of Temples. An enchanting area that is more of a plateau than a valley is a truly unique and magical place. Selinunte is one of the largest archaeological sites in Europe. The Selinunte Acropolis, formerly known as Megara Hyblae, was an important building complex and was built in the seventh century B.C. In the immediate surroundings of the Acropolis a small urban centre developed that in later years had a population that numbered tens of thousands.Beneath Monreale Mountain and located on the coast, is Palermo, the capital of Sicily. The city dates back to the eighth century B.C. However, nothing remains of the time when the Phoenicians founded the ancient town of Panormus, Palermo’s predecessor. The former summer residence of the Emir Of Palermo served as the palace of Norman king, Roger The Second. Up until the thirteenth century this luxurious Norman palace was a symbol of the wealth and power of the Normans. With its many fascinating ancient monuments, the remains of the CARTHAGINIANS, GREEKS and ROMANS, and with the glorious heritage of the Middle Ages and the charming influences of both the ARABS and the NORMANS, SICILY is justifiably known as, ‘A Treasure Trove Of History’.

Taormina is the most picturesque city in Sicily because its houses were built in a small area but with the 250-meter difference between the levels. Because it's been continually inhabited since it was set up, ancient Greek and Roman buildings medieval palaces, churches and modern hotels stand next to each other.
[Foreign Language] Castello de Taormina was built on the 400-meter Peak of Tauro Mountain. From here, we can see the whole city; the sea, the nearby Isola Bella Island and the cone of Etna. Its minister, dating back to the 13th century was irrelatively simple building but it's bare and palaces, Palazzo Courvaja and Palazzo Ducal de San Stefano are rather ornate. Even today, Sicily is judged mainly based on books and films. For example, based on Mario Pozo's novels the Sicilian or the trilogy, Godfather.
Sicily is thought to be world of the mafia and blood feud, the Vendetta. There's no doubt about the existence of the mafia but it sure that tourist won't be able to notice their actions. Public security isn't worst than anywhere else in Italy, thanks to the police.
If we're privileged to see a wedding in such an Old Italian town, it's inevitable to remember the film Matrimonio all'Italiana; of course it was different when Sofia Loren and Mastroianni walking along the narrow cobalt streets of Taormina, we can feel the taste of Italy the most. Small antique shops, the small work of local craftsmen, the Mediterranean style mixed with antique elements of the houses, the color and smell of the flowers are impressive.
The best known site of the town, the former Greek Taorminian is the Greek theater. The staggered seats of the huge semi-circle arc were carved into the rocks, so that behind the stage the most beautiful sites of nature will be the scenery. The famous Hungarian painter Czontvary was also impressed by the site. His masterpiece was contributed to increasing the fame of Taormina.
We have to work to get to know the town, up steps, down steps. Fortunately, we can reach the Greek theater by cable cars as well. The acoustics of the theater are also excellent. Every summer, concerts and performances take place here.
From Taormina, we can go for nice trips to the thermal baths of Ali Terme. The elegant beaches of Forza d'Agro or Mazaro and some romantic ruins of castles can also be found in the mountains nearby.

However one of us wasn’t completely “on board” with some of Palermo’s more traditional delicacies – organ meat doesn’t make much of an appearance at our dinner table back home. The snow on the summit region of Etna obscures the fact that deep within the volcano is an unimaginable natural furnace with a temperature of around 1,000 degrees Celsius.Marsala was given its name by the Arabs who called it ‘Marsal-Allah’, ‘God’s Harbor’. Therefore only a few historical remnants have survived. However, after each disaster the city was rebuilt and the result is a Baroque city dominated by fascinating sights full of character and charm. A devastating earthquake in 1693 destroyed the original town of Noto and left it in ruins. Construction of the new town took almost a hundred years until at end of the eighteenth century most of its buildings had been rebuilt. In addition to the geometrical design of its streets the remarkable architectural harmony of the town has been created by much use of ochre-coloured sandstone. The privately-owned train, the Ferrovia Circumetnea, travels around Mount Etna from Catania to Riposto. A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. Taormina is situated on a rock high above the Ionic Sea. The Teatro Greco was built out of the stone of Monte Tauro in the third century A.D. and five hundred years later it was enlarged by the Romans for gladiatorial battle. The old town ended at Porta Messina whose medieval palaces and villas have been preserved right up until the present day. A few kilometres from Palermo and set within a beautiful bay is Mondello sheltered by the slopes of Monte Pellegrino that contains a grotto, an altar and a pilgrims church, the Santuario Di Santa Rosalia. Here this fascinating journey comes to an end. Sicily is exquisite, an ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.

The highest active volcano, Etna can be approached from Europa Catania the most easily. On the top of the 3, 269-meter mountain is an observatory which watches earthquakes, seaquakes, eruptions and lava killed 10,000 of people throughout the centuries especially in 1169, 1693, 1886, 1910, and 1929. The latest eruption was in 2002. Fortunately, nobody was killed but this still-active volcano can't be approached by cable car or jeep as was possible in the last centuries. The motorway is the continuation of Catania via Ethnia leading us higher and higher among fruit gardens, vineyards, and almond trees. Crosses designate the end of the lava of each eruption. The road leads to Casa Cantoniera at 1882 meters among pine trees and evergreens. From here, we could have gone on by cable car which isn't working at present.
In Europe, there are few active volcanoes and all five can be found in the area of the Mediterranean Sea. The volcano in Santorini in Greece has been inactive for a long time but hasn't stopped activity completely. The other four emits smoke in Italy. Stromboli and Volcano are near Etna alarming the people in the Li-Pari islands belonging to Sicily. Vesuvius which buried Pompey towers over Naples. It's interesting to watch the creative power and vitality of man and nature. On the solid lava and ash, more and more new fruit gardens and vineyards appear every year making us forget the catastrophes.

Sicily is located in the central Mediterranean. It extends from the tip of the Apennine peninsula from which it is separated only by the narrow Strait of Messina, towards the North African coast. Its most prominent landmark is Mount Etna, which is at 3,320 m (10,890 ft) the tallest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world. The island has a typical Mediterranean climate.
The earliest archeological evidence of human dwelling on the island dates from 8000 BC. At around 750 BC, Sicily became a Greek colony and for the next 600 years it was the site of the Greek-Punic and Roman-Punic wars, which ended with the Roman destruction of Carthage. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, Sicily often changed hands, and during the early Middle Ages it was ruled in turn by the Vandals, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. Later on, the Kingdom of Sicily lasted between 1130 and 1816, subordinated to the crowns of Aragon, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and finally the Bourbons, as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. It was united with the rest of Italy in 1860, but a subsequent economic collapse led to a wave of emigration, separatism, and the emergence of the Mafia, whose criminal activities pose problems to this day. After the birth of the Italian Republic in 1946, Sicily was given special status as an autonomous region.

Because it's been continually inhabited since it was set up, ancient Greek and Roman buildings medieval palaces, churches and modern hotels stand next to each other. [Foreign Language] Castello de Taormina was built on the 400-meter Peak of Tauro Mountain. From here, we can see the whole city; the sea, the nearby Isola Bella Island and the cone of Etna. Its minister, dating back to the 13th century was irrelatively simple building but it's bare and palaces, Palazzo Courvaja and Palazzo Ducal de San Stefano are rather ornate. Even today, Sicily is judged mainly based on books and films. For example, based on Mario Pozo's novels the Sicilian or the trilogy, Godfather. Sicily is thought to be world of the mafia and blood feud, the Vendetta. There's no doubt about the existence of the mafia but it sure that tourist won't be able to notice their actions. Public security isn't worst than anywhere else in Italy, thanks to the police. If we're privileged to see a wedding in such an Old Italian town, it's inevitable to remember the film Matrimonio all'Italiana; of course it was different when Sofia Loren and Mastroianni walking along the narrow cobalt streets of Taormina, we can feel the taste of Italy the most. Small antique shops, the small work of local craftsmen, the Mediterranean style mixed with antique elements of the houses, the color and smell of the flowers are impressive. The best known site of the town, the former Greek Taorminian is the Greek theater. The staggered seats of the huge semi-circle arc were carved into the rocks, so that behind the stage the most beautiful sites of nature will be the scenery. The famous Hungarian painter Czontvary was also impressed by the site. His masterpiece was contributed to increasing the fame of Taormina. We have to work to get to know the town, up steps, down steps. Fortunately, we can reach the Greek theater by cable cars as well. The acoustics of the theater are also excellent. Every summer, concerts and performances take place here. From Taormina, we can go for nice trips to the thermal baths of Ali Terme. The elegant beaches of Forza d'Agro or Mazaro and some romantic ruins of castles can also be found in the mountains nearby. Later came the Arabs and the Normans. Catania is Sicily’s second largest city and has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. Therefore only a few historical remnants have survived. However, after each disaster the city was rebuilt and the result is a Baroque city dominated by fascinating sights full of character and charm. A devastating earthquake in 1693 destroyed the original town of Noto and left it in ruins. Construction of the new town took almost a hundred years until at end of the eighteenth century most of its buildings had been rebuilt. In addition to the geometrical design of its streets the remarkable architectural harmony of the town has been created by much use of ochre-coloured sandstone. The privately-owned train, the Ferrovia Circumetnea, travels around Mount Etna from Catania to Riposto. A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. Taormina is situated on a rock high above the Ionic Sea. The Teatro Greco was built out of the stone of Monte Tauro in the third century A.D. and five hundred years later it was enlarged by the Romans for gladiatorial battle. The old town ended at Porta Messina whose medieval palaces and villas have been preserved right up until the present day. A few kilometres from Palermo and set within a beautiful bay is Mondello sheltered by the slopes of Monte Pellegrino that contains a grotto, an altar and a pilgrims church, the Santuario Di Santa Rosalia. Here this fascinating journey comes to an end. Sicily is exquisite, an ancient island of both discovery and pleasure. -

The highest active volcano, Etna can be approached from Europa Catania the most easily. On the top of the 3, 269-meter mountain is an observatory which watches earthquakes, seaquakes, eruptions and lava killed 10,000 of people throughout the centuries especially in 1169, 1693, 1886, 1910, and 1929. The latest eruption was in 2002. Fortunately, nobody was killed but this still-active volcano can't be approached by cable car or jeep as was possible in the last centuries. The motorway is the continuation of Catania via Ethnia leading us higher and higher among fruit gardens, vineyards, and almond trees. Crosses designate the end of the lava of each eruption. The road leads to Casa Cantoniera at 1882 meters among pine trees and evergreens. From here, we could have gone on by cable car which isn't working at present. In Europe, there are few active volcanoes and all five can be found in the area of the Mediterranean Sea. The volcano in Santorini in Greece has been inactive for a long time but hasn't stopped activity completely. The other four emits smoke in Italy. Stromboli and Volcano are near Etna alarming the people in the Li-Pari islands belonging to Sicily. Vesuvius which buried Pompey towers over Naples. It's interesting to watch the creative power and vitality of man and nature. On the solid lava and ash, more and more new fruit gardens and vineyards appear every year making us forget the catastrophes. There are some wonderful trekkings that you can do to enjoy the beauty of the main Sicilian sites like Nebrodi mountains, Madonie mountains, Etna volcano, etc.
Visit the Salt Flats in Trapani where you will still see salt being made in the traditional way, by sweeping up the salt after the tide has gone out & then being ground down in ancient windmills.
Visit the popular seaside town of San Vito Lo Capo on the West Coast, famous for its sandy beach and where the low two story white Moorish architecture can be seen.
Visit Erice on the West Coast, the highest town in Sicily, with it's ancient stone walled city.
Visit Mazara Del Vallo on the South Coast for it's Tunisian Quarter.
Visit the Zingaro Reserve on the West Coast of Sicily for some of the best nature walks, natural beaches and examples of the dwarf palm that the area is famous for.
Visit the town of Noto on the South Coast, a Unesco World Heritage site due to the best examples of Baroque Architecture left in Europe today.

In the immediate surroundings of the Acropolis a small urban centre developed that in later years had a population that numbered tens of thousands.Beneath Monreale Mountain and located on the coast, is Palermo, the capital of Sicily. The city dates back to the eighth century B.C. However, nothing remains of the time when the Phoenicians founded the ancient town of Panormus, Palermo’s predecessor. The former summer residence of the Emir Of Palermo served as the palace of Norman king, Roger The Second. Up until the thirteenth century this luxurious Norman palace was a symbol of the wealth and power of the Normans. With its many fascinating ancient monuments, the remains of the CARTHAGINIANS, GREEKS and ROMANS, and with the glorious heritage of the Middle Ages and the charming influences of both the ARABS and the NORMANS, SICILY is justifiably known as, ‘A Treasure Trove Of History’.

Visit Taormina in Sicily
Taormina is the most picturesque city in Sicily because its houses were built in a small area but with the 250-meter difference between the levels. Because it's been continually inhabited since it was set up, ancient Greek and Roman buildings medieval palaces, churches and modern hotels stand next to each other.
[Foreign Language] Castello de Taormina was built on the 400-meter Peak of Tauro Mountain. From here, we can see the whole city; the sea, the nearby Isola Bella Island and the cone of Etna. Its minister, dating back to the 13th century was irrelatively simple building but it's bare and palaces, Palazzo Courvaja and Palazzo Ducal de San Stefano are rather ornate. Even today, Sicily is judged mainly based on books and films. For example, based on Mario Pozo's novels the Sicilian or the trilogy, Godfather.
Sicily is thought to be world of the mafia and blood feud, the Vendetta. There's no doubt about the existence of the mafia but it sure that tourist won't be able to notice their actions. Public security isn't worst than anywhere else in Italy, thanks to the police.
If we're privileged to see a wedding in such an Old Italian town, it's inevitable to remember the film Matrimonio all'Italiana; of course it was different when Sofia Loren and Mastroianni walking along the narrow cobalt streets of Taormina, we can feel the taste of Italy the most. Small antique shops, the small work of local craftsmen, the Mediterranean style mixed with antique elements of the houses, the color and smell of the flowers are impressive.
The best known site of the town, the former Greek Taorminian is the Greek theater. The staggered seats of the huge semi-circle arc were carved into the rocks, so that behind the stage the most beautiful sites of nature will be the scenery. The famous Hungarian painter Czontvary was also impressed by the site. His masterpiece was contributed to increasing the fame of Taormina.
We have to work to get to know the town, up steps, down steps. Fortunately, we can reach the Greek theater by cable cars as well. The acoustics of the theater are also excellent. Every summer, concerts and performances take place here.
From Taormina, we can go for nice trips to the thermal baths of Ali Terme. The elegant beaches of Forza d'Agro or Mazaro and some romantic ruins of castles can also be found in the mountains nearby.

It is one of the most beautiful enclosed Baroque towns in Sicily. However, many of Noto’s historic buildings have been neglected for many years and are in somewhat less than perfect condition. The Cathedrale Di San Nicolo also fell into disrepair as a result of continued neglect and this caused both its dome and part of its roof to collapse in 1996.A proud and mighty volcano rises above eastern Sicily. Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, is the undisputed ruler of this fascinating Mediterranean island. The snow on the summit region of Etna obscures the fact that deep within the volcano is an unimaginable natural furnace with a temperature of around 1,000 degrees Celsius.Marsala was given its name by the Arabs who called it ‘Marsal-Allah’, ‘God’s Harbor’. The monumental city gate is a reminder of the landing of Giuseppe Garibaldis on the 8th of March, 1860.In the mountain area close to Palermo, another wonderful city featured on our journey, is the picturesque town of Monreale, a townscape that for more than 800 years, has been dominated by a single building. Monreale Cathedral was built due to a struggle for power between the Bishop of Palermo and the Norman King, William.Sicily is exquisite. An ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.

Later came the Arabs and the Normans. Catania is Sicily’s second largest city and has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. Therefore only a few historical remnants have survived. However, after each disaster the city was rebuilt and the result is a Baroque city dominated by fascinating sights full of character and charm. A devastating earthquake in 1693 destroyed the original town of Noto and left it in ruins. Construction of the new town took almost a hundred years until at end of the eighteenth century most of its buildings had been rebuilt. In addition to the geometrical design of its streets the remarkable architectural harmony of the town has been created by much use of ochre-coloured sandstone. The privately-owned train, the Ferrovia Circumetnea, travels around Mount Etna from Catania to Riposto. A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. Taormina is situated on a rock high above the Ionic Sea. The Teatro Greco was built out of the stone of Monte Tauro in the third century A.D. and five hundred years later it was enlarged by the Romans for gladiatorial battle. The old town ended at Porta Messina whose medieval palaces and villas have been preserved right up until the present day. A few kilometres from Palermo and set within a beautiful bay is Mondello sheltered by the slopes of Monte Pellegrino that contains a grotto, an altar and a pilgrims church, the Santuario Di Santa Rosalia. Here this fascinating journey comes to an end. Sicily is exquisite, an ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.

The latest eruption was in 2002. Fortunately, nobody was killed but this still-active volcano can't be approached by cable car or jeep as was possible in the last centuries. The motorway is the continuation of Catania via Ethnia leading us higher and higher among fruit gardens, vineyards, and almond trees. Crosses designate the end of the lava of each eruption. The road leads to Casa Cantoniera at 1882 meters among pine trees and evergreens. From here, we could have gone on by cable car which isn't working at present.

The volcano in Santorini in Greece has been inactive for a long time but hasn't stopped activity completely. The other four emits smoke in Italy.
