Rest In Peace Jam Master Jay
On October 30th, 2002 the Hip Hop community lost one of the most influential DJs of all time, Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell. In honor of JMJ's death I present to you #TheJamMasterJayChallenge Fall 2015 at The New School (Section A).
There's more to DJing than mixing, scratching or beat juggling. Thus, I created The Jam Master Jay Challenge so my New School students could develop a more complete understanding of the many facets there are to this beautiful art form. One of those facets revolves around a DJ's ability to back up an MC. Just like Jam Master Jay did for Run DMC.
The rules are simple. Students must use their sense of timing and rhythm to navigate through and extend a series of drum breaks as Brooklyn's own Rabbi Darkside freestyles over their beats. Might I add, there's not a laptop in sight. Cue buttons won't help you get through this challenge!
I'm proud of all my students for stepping it up and devoting the necessary practice time to honor the legacy of one of the greatest to ever do this in Jam Master Jay.
I'm especially impressed by the challenge's top 3 standouts!

I think it's safe to say the DJ Skills And Styles Jam Master Jay Challenge at the New School University helped my Fall 2015 students realize the difference between running a serato program and using real vinyl. Don't get me wrong, technology is awesome. Serato has done wonders for my creativity, at home and on stage. But it's also important to know DJ technology can hide your weaknesses. Thus, indirectly making your skills digress. So embrace the new DJ gear and software but never turn your back on the basics. Two Turntables and a microphone!
Congrats to the winners of The Jam Master Jay Challenge. In 3rd place, Derek (7:25). My girl Sade (00:25) took 2nd. Last but FIRST, the winner, Josephine aka Jo Jo (14:10).
I'd like to send a heartfelt thank you to:
Rabbi Darkside for participating in this year's Jam Master Jay Challenge. I know you're a busy person Sam and the thought you'd take time out of your schedule to help train my students is humbling to say the least. I love you dude.

Finally, I'd like to thank the person who inspired this challenge in the first place. The late, great Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell. I remember listening to Run DMC's "Here We Go" for the first time and marveling at how JMJ coasts through Billy Squier's "Big Beat" while Run and D road every drop and every scratch Jay laid down. The chemistry between the 3 of them is unmatched by any Hip Hop group since! Rest In Peace JMJ. Thank you for influencing me to be the DJ I am today!

Jam Master Jay
Jason William Mizell (January 21, 1965 – October 30, 2002), better known by his stage name Jam Master Jay, was an American musician and DJ. He was the DJ of the influential hip hop group Run–D.M.C. During the 1980s, Run-D.M.C. became one of the biggest hip-hop groups and are credited with breaking hip-hop into mainstream music.
For his skill re-working riffs from classic guitar records, he was ranked No. 10 on Spin's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. On October 30, 2002, while recording new music at his studio in the Jamaica section of Queens, New York City, Mizell was shot and murdered by an unknown assailant.
Early life
Mizell was born in Brooklyn, New York City. At the age of 3, he started playing trumpet and played bass, guitar, and drums in various bands prior to discovering turntables. He moved to Hollis, Queens in 1975 with his family where he soon discovered the turntables and started DJing at the age of 13. He caught on quickly because of his musical experience and after a year of DJing he felt that he was good enough to play in front of people.

I think it's safe to say the DJ Skills And Styles Jam Master Jay Challenge at the New School University helped my Fall 2015 students realize the difference between running a serato program and using real vinyl. Don't get me wrong, technology is awesome. Serato has done wonders for my creativity, at home and on stage. But it's also important to know DJ technology can hide your weaknesses. Thus, indirectly making your skills digress. So embrace the new DJ gear and software but never turn your back on the basics. Two Turntables and a microphone! On October 30th, 2002 the Hip Hop community lost one of the most influential DJs of all time, Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell. In honor of JMJ's death I present to you #TheJamMasterJayChallenge Fall 2015 at The New School (Section A).
There's more to DJing than mixing, scratching or beat juggling. Thus, I created The Jam Master Jay Challenge so my New School students could develop a more complete understanding of the many facets there are to this beautiful art form. One of those facets revolves around a DJ's ability to back up an MC. Just like Jam Master Jay did for Run DMC.
The rules are simple. Students must use their sense of timing and rhythm to navigate through and extend a series of drum breaks as Brooklyn's own Rabbi Darkside freestyles over their beats. Might I add, there's not a laptop in sight. Cue buttons won't help you get through this challenge!
I'm proud of all my students for stepping it up and devoting the necessary practice time to honor the legacy of one of the greatest to ever do this in Jam Master Jay.
I'm especially impressed by the challenge's top 3 standouts!

DJs, we live in an age where lifting the needle off a piece of wax and swapping it, only to put the needle to the record again is a thing of the past. It's a skill that's been discarded by a new generation of Turntablists that believe pre-producing or arranging the music you play on digital mediums allow for room to do more. Jam Master Jay's Son TJ Mizell: Police Didn't Do Enough to Solve JMJ's Murder
TJ Mizell was only eleven years old when his father, Jam Master Jay of Run DMC, was brutally murdered in 2002, which Mizell spoke about exclusively with VladTV. When asked about how he was told about his father's death, TJ reveals that he unfortunately learned of the situation after turning on the news and seeing his mother in the report. While there were other people in the studio with Jam Master Jay at the time he was killed, TJ says that no one claims to have seen anything, which he and his family thought was suspicious. Rapper Black Child sat down with VladTV for an exclusive interview, where he detailed catching an open gun case after signing with Run DMC's Jam Master Jay. The Queens native explained that he linked up with Jay after seeing him in their Hollis neighborhood and being invited to the studio, where he recorded songs with the legendary musician.
When asked about working with Jam Master Jay, Black Child explained that their relationship wasn't able to fully flourish after he caught a gun case that led to him being locked up for 30 months. Black Child addressed the situation by telling us that he was caught with some guns that belonged to his friends, and instead of snitching on them he took the charges and did the time.
While in jail, Black Child started seeing Ja Rule's buzz, and he explained to us that he started writing verses behind bars and got in contact with Ja right after getting out. Soon after, the cards fell into place and Black Child signed to Murder Inc. after Jam Master Jay released him from his contract; the famed Run DMC musician was gunned down just a few years later.

DJs, we live in an age where lifting the needle off a piece of wax and swapping it, only to put the needle to the record again is a thing of the past. It's a skill that's been discarded by a new generation of Turntablists that believe pre-producing or arranging the music you play on digital mediums allow for room to do more. More isn't always better though. Most of the time more is just more.
And so the students I take under my wing will always spend time establishing a relationship with vinyl because it's important to develop the tactile instincts you need to control 2 turntables and a mixer. No one epitomized the intuitive skill required to manipulate actual records better than #JamMasterJay (RIP).
All you have to do is listen to "Here We Go: Live At The Funhouse" to appreciate the great responsibility a DJ has to not only back an MC, but do it on vinyl. If the record skips YOU must recover quickly and efficiently enough so as to avoid disrupting the lyricist's flow. Relative Mode on Serato ain't saving you. It's for this reason my students spend the first half of their semester in my #DJSkillsAndStyles class learning how to play and alter music on vinyl. As Bruce Lee says, "Knowing is not enough, we must apply". Thus, I issue the #JamMasterJayChallenge for their midterm exam.
The rules are simple. Students must use their sense of timing, rhythm and personal style to navigate through a series of drum breaks ("Big Beat", "Impeach The President" and "God Made Me Funky") as Brooklyn's own Rabbi Darkside aka Sam Sellers freestyles over their beats.
The New Schoolers I teach this term all did the damn thing but there were 3 standout students who are worthy of special mention:
Michaela (3rd place)
Joe (2nd place)
Dylan (1st place)
This trio did an outstanding job of keeping the legacy of DJs like Jam Master Jay, Tony Crush, Jazzy Jay, Grand Master Flash, GrandWizzard Theodore... and their contributions to the art of Hip Hop DJing alive.

When asked about how he was told about his father's death, TJ reveals that he unfortunately learned of the situation after turning on the news and seeing his mother in the report. While there were other people in the studio with Jam Master Jay at the time he was killed, TJ says that no one claims to have seen anything, which he and his family thought was suspicious.
During the conversation TJ also spoke with us about his relationship with 50 Cent, whom Jam Master Jay discovered. TJ told us that he is on great terms with Fif, and he added that they recently did a charity event together for the Jam Master Jay Music Foundation.

BERLIN (AP) -- A manhunt was underway Friday for a shooter or shooters who opened fire at a shopping mall in Munich, killing and wounding several people, a Munich police spokeswoman said. Munich police spokeswoman Claudia Kuenzel told The Associated Press there had been "several dead and wounded" in the shooting at Olympia Einkaufszentrum mall.
