Philip V (Greek: Φίλιππος Ε΄) (238–179 BC) was King of Macedon from 221 to 179 BC. Philip's reign was principally marked by an unsuccessful struggle with the emerging power of Rome. Philip was attractive and charismatic as a young man. A dashing and courageous warrior, he was inevitably compared to Alexander the Great and was nicknamed the beloved of all Greece (Greek: "ἐρώμενος τῶν Ἑλλήνων") because he became, as Polybius put it, "...the beloved of all Hellenes for his charitable inclination".
The son of Demetrius II and Chryseis, Philip was nine years old at his father's death in 229 BC. He had an elder paternal half sister called Apame. His cousin, Antigonus Doson, administered the kingdom as regent until his death in 221 BC when Philip was seventeen years old.
On his ascent to the throne, Philip quickly showed that while he was young, this did not mean that Macedon was weak. In the first year of his rule, he pushed back the Dardani and other tribes in the north of the kingdom.

This is Cynoscephalae, near the modern town of Larissa in central Greece. In 197BC Phillip V of Macedon fought a fierce battle, here, against a Roman army that was determined to destroy him. The stakes were high, both Rome and Macedon were fighting for control of Greece. If Rome won, she would rule the entire Mediterranean world; but Cynoscephalae was not just a battle between two military powers, it was a battle between two ways of fighting. Between the old way of the Greeks and the new way of Rome.

According to Professor Kagan, through these actions, Philip was able to make inroads into the Greek world. What made these inroads more effective was Philip's uncanny talent for diplomacy and the fighting between the various poleis. Eventually, the Greeks under the efforts of Athens and Demosthenes decided to face Philip in the battle of Chaeronea. The battle, though close, was won by Philip and his Macedonian forces. Finally, Professor Kagan evaluates the actions of Demosthenes and concludes that his actions should be judged as a noble endeav...

We will trace the clues that led us to the conclusion that these ruins were a stoa built by Philip V. This program is Chapter 5 of an 8-video series on the excavations at Bylazora.
