Phone Call from a Stranger is a 1952 American drama film directed by Jean Negulesco, who was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The screenplay by Nunnally Johnson and I.A.R. Wylie, which received the award for Best Scenario at the same festival, centers on the survivor of a plane crash who contacts the relatives of three of the victims he came to know on board the flight. His flight is delayed, and while waiting in the airport restaurant he meets a few of his fellow passengers: troubled, alcoholic Dr. Robert Fortness (Michael Rennie), haunted by his responsibility for a car accident in which a colleague, Dr. Tim Brooks (Hugh Beaumont) was killed, is returning home to his wife Claire (Beatrice Straight) and teenage son Jerry (Ted Donaldson), and plans to tell the district attorney the truth about the incident; aspiring actress Binky Gay (Shelley Winters), who is hoping to free her husband Mike Carr (Craig Stevens) from the clutches of his domineering mother, former vaudevillian Sally Carr (Evelyn Varden); and overly loud traveling salesman Eddie Hoke (Keenan Wynn), whose photograph of his young, attractive wife Marie (Bette Davis) wearing a swimsuit proves to be quite different from reality. Hoping to change Sallie's opinion of her daughter-in-law, he tells her Binky had been cast as Mary Martin's replacement in South Pacific on Broadway and had recommended Sallie for a role. Trask's final visit is to Marie, who he discovers is an invalid paralyzed from the waist down. Marie reveals that early in her marriage she had left Eddie, who she found to be vulgar and tiresome, for another man, Marty Nelson (Warren Stevens), who deserted her after she hit her head on a dock while she was swimming. While in the hospital, she was confined to an iron lung and feeling hopeless about her future when Eddie arrived to take her home. Marie tells Trask that despite his often obnoxious behavior, Eddie was the most decent man she had ever known, and had taught her the true meaning of love.Marie's story teaches Trask a lesson about marital infidelity and forgiveness, and he calls Jane to tell her he's returning home.

Nunnally Hunter Johnson (December 5, 1897 – March 25, 1977) was an American filmmaker who wrote, produced, and directed motion pictures.
Biography
Early life
Nunnally Hunter Johnson was born on December 5, 1897 in Columbus, Georgia. He was the first of two sons born to Johnny Pearl "Onnie" (née Patrick) and James Nunnally "Jim" Johnson. He and his younger brother, Cecil Patrick Johnson, were raised in Columbus, Georgia. His father was a journeyman mechanic, turned tinsmith and coppersmith, turned pipe and sheetmetal shop superintendent for the Central of Georgia Railway. Nunnally graduated from Columbus High School in 1915. While living in Columbus in 1919, at 1312 Third Street, Nunnally was a second lieutenant in the field artillery reserve corps. Cecil graduated from Georgia Tech in 1924, married Gene Clair Norris, and moved to Bellingham, Washington, where he was first a gas department superintendent and later a vice-president with Puget Sound Power & Light.
Career
He began his career as a journalist, writing for the Columbus Enquirer Sun, the Savannah Press, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, and the New York Herald Tribune. He also wrote short stories and a collection of these, There Ought To Be a Law, was published in 1930. His first connection with film work was the sale of screen rights to one of his stories in 1927. Johnson asked his editor if he could write film criticism articles in 1932. When this request was denied, he decided to relocate to Hollywood and work directly in the film industry.

Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson, June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an American actress and model. Famous for playing "dumb blonde" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s, emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality. Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962. She continues to be considered a major popular culture icon.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monroe spent most of her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage and married for the first time at the age of sixteen. While working in a factory as part of the war effort in 1944, she met a photographer and began a successful pin-up modeling career. The work led to two short-lived film contracts with Twentieth Century-Fox (1946–47) and Columbia Pictures (1948). After a series of minor film roles, she signed a new contract with Fox in 1951. Over the next two years, she became a popular actress with roles in several comedies, including As Young as You Feel and Monkey Business, and in the dramas Clash by Night and Don't Bother to Knock. Monroe faced a scandal when it was revealed that she had posed for nude photos before becoming a star, but rather than damaging her career, the story increased interest in her films.

Phone Call from a Stranger is a 1952 American drama film directed by Jean Negulesco, who was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The screenplay by Nunnally Johnson and I.A.R. Wylie, which received the award for Best Scenario at the same festival, centers on the survivor of a plane crash who contacts the relatives of three of the victims he came to know on board the flight. After his wife Jane (Helen Westcott) admits to an extramarital affair, Iowa attorney David Trask (Gary Merrill) abandons her and their daughters and heads for Los Angeles. His flight is delayed, and while waiting in the airport restaurant he meets a few of his fellow passengers: troubled, alcoholic Dr. Robert Fortness (Michael Rennie), haunted by his responsibility for a car accident in which a colleague, Dr. Tim Brooks (Hugh Beaumont) was killed, is returning home to his wife Claire (Beatrice Straight) and teenage son Jerry (Ted Donaldson), and plans to tell the district attorney the truth about the incident; aspiring actress Binky Gay (Shelley Winters), who is hoping to free her husband Mike Carr (Craig Stevens) from the clutches of his domineering mother, former vaudevillian Sally Carr (Evelyn Varden); and overly loud traveling salesman Eddie Hoke (Keenan Wynn), whose photograph of his young, attractive wife Marie (Bette Davis) wearing a swimsuit proves to be quite different from reality. When a storm forces the plane to land en route, they continue to share their life stories via flashbacks during the unexpected four-hour layover. They exchange home phone numbers with the idea they may one day have a reunion. Following a plane crash that kills his three acquaintances, Trask contacts their families by phone and invites himself to their homes. Despite Claire's objections, Trask tells Jerry the truth about his father's past, but assures him he was a good man determined to right the wrong he had committed. Hoping to change Sallie's opinion of her daughter-in-law, he tells her Binky had been cast as Mary Martin's replacement in South Pacific on Broadway and had recommended Sallie for a role. Trask's final visit is to Marie, who he discovers is an invalid paralyzed from the waist down. Marie reveals that early in her marriage she had left Eddie, who she found to be vulgar and tiresome, for another man, Marty Nelson (Warren Stevens), who deserted her after she hit her head on a dock while she was swimming. While in the hospital, she was confined to an iron lung and feeling hopeless about her future when Eddie arrived to take her home. In a London still rebuilding after World War II, suburban businessman Arthur Groome (Rex Harrison) carries on an extramarital affair with Rose (Patricia Wayne), a chorus girl. Fleeing in a panic, Arthur incriminates himself in her death and is charged with her murder. Three Came Home
Three Came Home (1950) is a post-war film made by Twentieth Century-Fox, based on the memoirs of the same name by writer Agnes Newton Keith. It depicts Keith's life in North Borneo in the period immediately before the Japanese invasion in 1942, and her subsequent internment and suffering, separated from her husband Harry, and with a young son to care for. Basierend auf der Erzählung u. dem Theatherstück von George Herbert Westley wurde dieser Film in den USA unter dem Titel "The House of Rothschild" im Jahr 1936 nach dem Drehbuch von Nunnally Johnson von 20th Century Pictures verfilmt. Regie führten Alfred L. Werker und Sidney Lanfield. 1940 kam der Film unter o.g. Titel auch in die deutschen Kinos. Der Film wurde sogar für den Oskar nominiert! Il professore di criminologia Richard Wanley rimane solo in città dopo aver accompagnato alla stazione moglie e figli in partenza per le vacanze. Si reca al club per una serata con gli amici e vede in una vetrina il ritratto di una donna affascinante.
Quando esce dal club si ferma di nuovo a contemplare il ritratto. Inaspettatamente sul vetro della vetrina si materializza l'immagine della donna. Ella ha nome Alice. Scambia qualche battuta con Wanley e lo invita a casa propria, con la scusa di mostrargli i disegni relativi al ritratto. Ma l'incontro galante è bruscamente interrotto dalla visita dell'amante della donna, un ricco uomo d'affari. Costui, geloso e adirato, si getta contro Wanley, che, afferrate istintivamente e per legittima difesa un paio di forbici posate su un tavolino, utilizzate precedentemente per stappare una bottiglia, uccide l'aggressore. Il suo primo impulso è quello di chiamare la polizia e denunciare l'accaduto, ma riflettendo sulle conseguenze sociali dell'apparire pubblicamente implicato in un assassinio, cambia proposito. Presa l'auto, si reca fuori città e si libera del cadavere gettandolo in un bosco.
Un boy scout ritrova il corpo e iniziano le indagini. Wanley ha lasciato molte tracce dietro di sé. L'indagine viene affidata al procuratore Frank Laior, uno degli amici del club. Laior insiste perché Wanley lo accompagni a effettuare un sopralluogo nella zona dove è stato ritrovato il cadavere. Un ricattatore, Heidt, che stava pedinando l'uomo ucciso, si presenta da Alice e la minaccia di rivelare quanto sa alla polizia se non gli viene versta una grossa somma di denaro. Alice e Wanley decidono di liberarsi anche di Heidt, ma il tentativo pare non riuscire. Il cerchio si chiude su Wanley, il quale non sembra avere più alcuna via di scampo.
Wanley si sveglia nella poltrona del club con in grembo il Cantico dei Cantici, il libro che stava leggendo. Tutto quello che ha vissuto così intensamente, non è stato altro che un sogno. Attorno a lui, riconosce i volti dei protagonisti della sua storia nelle persone che frequentano il circolo. Uscito in strada, una donna gli si avvicina per chiedergli un fiammifero: spaventato fugge senza girarsi.

Keith was initially interned at Berhala Island near Sandakan, North Borneo (today's Sabah) but spent most of her captivity at Batu Lintang camp at Kuching, Sarawak. The camp was liberated in September 1945.
