ABOUT BELLA: Bella Savitsky Abzug (July 24, 1920 -- March 31, 1998) was an American lawyer, Congresswoman, social activist and a leader of the Women's Movement. In 1971 Abzug joined other leading feminists such as Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan to found the National Women's Political Caucus. She famously declared "This woman's place is in the House—the House of Representatives" in her successful 1970 campaign to join that body when she became the first Jewish woman in the United States Congress. She was later appointed to chair the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year and to plan the 1977 National Women's Conference by President Gerald Ford and led President Jimmy Carter's commission on women. Bella's integrity, courage and outspoken effectiveness continues to inspire women in politics, business and civic engagement around the world.
Working Class Women Changing Their World is a film from the National Congress of Neighborhood Women's first conference in Washington, DC., directed by Christine Noschese and produced by Jan Peterson and Christine Noschese, 1977.
The Washington DC conference in 1975 was organized by Jan Peterson, Nancy Seifer and Barbara Mikulski to bring the concerns and perspectives of women to discussions regarding urban policy and civil rights. Funding from Monsignor Geno Baroni, through his National Center for Urban Ethnic Affairs, made possible for one hundred and fifty women from the National Congress of Neighborhood Women to gather, share their stories and describe the work they had been doing in their local neighborhoods.

Bella Abzug stands with Shirley Chisholm, Betty Friedan, and Gloria Steinem as one of the most important figures in the womens rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Throughout her life, Bella, a Hunter College/CUNY alumnus, was known for her loud voice, flamboyant style, and large hats. She began her professional career as a lawyer in the 1940s and became a noted advocate for numerous liberal and leftist causes. These included civil rights cases in the South and cases related to the advancement of womens rights. By the late 1960s, she had become a vocal critic of the Vietnam War. In 1971 she was elected to serve New Yorks 19th District in the House of Representatives where she served until 1977. Her tenure in Congress was notable for her unflinching support of womens rights. She was one of the loudest and most visible supporters of reproductive rights and the Equal Rights Amendment. In 1977 she competed in the contentious primary for the Democratic nomination for Mayor of New York City, eventually losing to future mayor Ed Koch. After several failed bids for various Congressional seats, Abzug retired from elected office. Though she never again held elected office after 1977, she remained an important figure in politics, womens rights, and social justice causes until her death in 1998. Bella Savitsky was born on July 24, 1920, in New York City. Both of her parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants. Her mother, Esther, was a homemaker and her father, Emanuel ran the Live and Let Live Meat Market.
When her father died, Abzug, then 13, was disallowed to say the Mourner's Kaddish for her father in synagogue, where that privilege was reserved for sons of the deceased. However, she did so as one of her first feminist actions because her father had no son.

Jane Fonda (born Lady Jayne Seymour Fonda; December 21, 1937) is an American actress, writer, political activist, former fashion model, and fitness guru. She rose to fame in the 1960s with films such as Barbarella and Cat Ballou. She has won two Academy Awards and received several other movie awards and nominations during more than 50 years as an actress. After 15 years of retirement, she returned to film in 2005 with Monster in Law, followed by Georgia Rule two years later. She also produced and starred in over 20 exercise videos released between 1982 and 1995, and once again in 2010.
Fonda has been an activist for many political causes; her opposition to the Vietnam War and associated activities were controversial. She has also protested the Iraq War and violence against women. She describes herself as a liberal and a feminist. In 2005, Fonda worked alongside Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem to co-found the Women's Media Center, an organization that works to amplify the voices of women in the media through advocacy, media and leadership training, and the creation of original content. Fonda currently serves on the board of the organization. Since 2001, Fonda has been a Christian. She published an autobiography in 2005, and in 2011, she published a second memoir, Prime Time.

Shirley MacLean Beaty (born April 24, 1934), known professionally as Shirley MacLaine, is an American film and theater actress, singer, dancer, activist and author, well known for her beliefs in New Age spirituality and reincarnation. She has written a large number of autobiographical works, many dealing with her spiritual beliefs as well as her Hollywood career. She was nominated for an Academy Award five times before winning the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1983 for her role in Terms of Endearment. Her younger brother is Warren Beatty.
Named after Shirley Temple, MacLaine was born in Richmond, Virginia. Her father, Ira Owens Beaty, was a professor of psychology, public school administrator, and real estate agent, and her mother, Kathlyn Corinne (née MacLean), was a drama teacher originally from Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada; MacLaine's grandparents were also teachers.The family was devoutly Baptist. Her uncle (her mother's brother-in-law) was A.A. MacLeod, a Communist member of the Ontario legislature in the 1940s.

Bella Abzug was a feminist and civil rights lawyer and later served the state of New York in the United States House of Representatives, from 1971 to 1977.
She was one of the first members of Congress to support gay rights, introducing the first federal gay rights bill, known as the Equality Act of 1974, with fellow congressman Ed Koch, who later became mayor of New York City.
It's been written that Abzug and several other Democratic members of congress were behind a plot to block Nixon's nomination of Gerald Ford as Vice President, in the hopes that if Nixon were taken down by the Watergate scandal, the succession of the Presidency would fall to the Democratic Speaker of the House.
Bella Abzug also appeared as herself in many film and television productions, most notably in Woody Allen's "Manhattan" and a 1977 episode of Saturday Night Live.

Bella Abzug and Ruth Messinger: Fighting for Women's Pay Equity
On August 26, 1985 members of the New York CIty Council and prominent women's rights activists gathered on City Hall steps to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the official ratification of the 19th amendment and to raise awareness regarding inequalities in women's pay. As several speakers in the full video point out, women had successfully fought to gain access to the voting booth, but without economic equality, women's rights as citizens were (are) still incomplete. The assembly included NOW's Jennifer Brown, renowned activist and public servant Bella Abzug, City Council Members Carol Bellamy and Ruth Messinger, labor lawyer Win Newman, and Title VII plaintiff Christine Craft. -

On August 26, 1985 members of the New York CIty Council and prominent women's rights activists gathered on City Hall steps to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the official ratification of the 19th amendment and to raise awareness regarding inequalities in women's pay. As several speakers in the full video point out, women had successfully fought to gain access to the voting booth, but without economic equality, women's rights as citizens were (are) still incomplete. The assembly included NOW's Jennifer Brown, renowned activist and public servant Bella Abzug, City Council Members Carol Bellamy and Ruth Messinger, labor lawyer Win Newman, and Title VII plaintiff Christine Craft.

Installment of a Cultural Medallion honoring Bella Abzug on October 7, 2014, at 2 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The ceremony was led by Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, who established the Cultural Medallion program for the Historic Landmarks Preservation Center. Born in The Bronx to Russian immigrants, Bella Abzug was a graduate of Hunter College (1942) and Columbia Law School (1947). A labor and civil rights lawyer, much of her work was pro bono defense for victims of injustice. A cofounder of Women Strike for Peace (1961), the national women's peace movement, and the National Women's Political Caucus (1971), created to increase women's participation in politics, she entered politics with a successful run for Congress (1970). Throughout history, activists have chosen different costumes and personas as strategic tools to help them stand up against injustice. We examined how the biblical figure Esther and the historical figure Bella Abzug fought for justice and liberation by adopting personas that helped them to achieve their goals. JWA staff demonstrated ways to use the stories of these women in your classrooms as you prepare for Purim. -

orn in Richmond, Virginia, in 1934, Shirley MacLaine was the product of a strict middle-class background from which she and her brother, the future actor Warren Beatty, escaped into the fantasy world of show-biz. Her ballet training and her long-legged pixie charm led to rapid success on Broadway in musical comedy. orn in Richmond, Virginia, in 1934, Shirley MacLaine was the product of a strict middle-class background from which she and her brother, the future actor Warren Beatty, escaped into the fantasy world of show-biz. Her ballet training and her long-legged pixie charm led to rapid success on Broadway in musical comedy.
Inevitably, Hollywood called and by 1955 Shirley was cast in Hitchcock's The Trouble With Harry. It wasn't too long before the fine dramatic roles also came to her opposite the most popular leading men of the time, like Fred MacMurray, Jack Lemmon, Frank Sinatra, Clint Eastwood and Robert Mitchum.
