Ik heb deze reportage terug gevonden op een oude VHS videocassette.
6 november 2001: na een lange strijd van herstructureringen, besparingen en extra overheidsgeld wordt dan toch nog het einde aangekondigd van Sabena, de in 1923 opgerichte Belgische luchtvaartmaatschappij.
Een ploeg van het programma 'Het leven zoals het is' volgde al enkele maanden het reilen en zeilen op de luchthaven van Zaventem en zat tijdens de laatste momenten van Sabena op de eerste rij. De laatste aflevering werd volledig gewijd aan het einde van Sabena. Een indrukwekkend voorbeeld van wat we in goed Nederlands 'fly on the wall'-journalistiek noemen.
Uitgezonden door de VRT als 'Het leven zoals het is: Luchthaven 2' op 25 april 2002.
Helaas ontbreekt de aftiteling, band liep ten einde.

De moeilijkheden bij Sabena zijn voorlopig achter de rug en het voorbestaan van de maatschappij is op middellange termijn verzekerd. Dat kon uiteraard niet zonder het vliegend personeel, dat hiertoe ook zijn steen heeft bijgedragen.
Het zal ten andere in de toekomst geconfronteerd worden met wijzigende arbeidsomstandigheden, maar hun leven zal er niet minder druk door worden. Dat blijkt uit de vierdelige reeks "Piloten"
die een aantal Sabenapiloten volgt en hun leven toont zoals het is. Vliegen heeft voor vele mensen nog iets mythisch, buiten het gewone, zelfs magisch.
Het beroep van piloot wordt daarom vaak omgeven met een aura van quasi-onbereikbaarheid dat zou zijn weggelegd voor de happy few, voor een elite. Toch is het voor de personen in kwestie evengoed een dagelijkse broodwinning, in principe een beroep als een ander. De makers van 'Piloten' hebben tijdens het draaien van deze reeks gemerkt dat alle piloten die ze volgden (Sabena had op dat moment tenminste - 700 piloten in dienst), wel trots zijn op wat ze doen, maar zeker niet teveel het glamoureuze aspect benadrukken. Het is gewoon hun beroep. Een boeiend beroep, maar toch. Eigenlijk wordt een deel van de glamour in deze reeks ontluisterd. De piloten worden gevolgd als ze 's morgens thuis vertrekken, afscheid nemen van hun partner, hun vluchtplan opstellen op de luchthaven, alles checken en dubbelchecken, opstijgen, landen en gaan slapen.
Maar er is meer. Alle piloten beseffen maar al te goed dat ze verantwoordelijk zijn voor de levens van een groot aantal mensen. Ze kunnen zich geen enkele fout, geen enkel concentratieverlies veroorloven. Alle piloten die werden gevolgd, zijn eigenlijk gezondheidsfreaks. Ook al omdat ze twee keer per jaar aan grondige medische tests worden onderworpen. Vandaar dat ze heel erg bezig zijn met wat ze eten, én met hun conditie. Maar als ze praten, is het doorgaans toch over hun passie: vliegen. 'Piloten' is gemaakt met de welwillende samenwerking van Sabena en dat levert exclusieve en uitzonderlijke beelden op. Er kon vrij gefilmd worden in cockpits.

Two Jumbojets with Pratt & Whitney JT9D-3 engines is taken.
A total of 361 passengers could be carried, 32 First class and 329 Economy. In Combi use 246 passengers and 6 palettes
After more than 20 years of service and more than 94,794 flying hours to here name (a record according to Boeing) The aircraft had a total of 17682 start and landings made.
"Aunt Agatha" waited on Brussels tarmac for a potential buyer which was not found, a solution in form of being used as restaurant also failed as "not transportable" so demolition was the final fate. The giant queen was scrapped at Zaventem on December 3 1994 the demolition was completed by December 13 1994

On April 4 1978 at 18:07 local time a Boeing 737-229C - OO-SDH, operated on a training flight with an instructor and two co-pilot students. Both students were going to practice ILS approaches to runway 25 at Charleroi-Gosselies Airport (CRL) followed by a touch-and-go. The initial six approaches were uneventful. The students then changed seats. The second student's first approach and touch-and-go were uneventful. During the second touch-and-go a flock of birds were observed crossing the runway. Several birds were ingested as the airplane was rotating. The instructor took over control and attempted to continue takeoff. The airplane failed to respond to his control inputs and seemed to decelerate. He then decided to abort the takeoff. There was insufficient runway length available so the Boeing overran, struck localiser antennas and skidded. The right main gear collapsed and the no. 2 engine was torn off in the slide. The aircraft came to rest 300m past the runway end and was destroyed by fire.
The airplane was only 3 years and 2 months old, build 1975.02.12 with msn 20914, it had 7424 flights with a total of 6983 hours. It was written off - damaged beyond repair
Aviation-report - PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT: "The probable cause of the accident is the interruption of the takeoff maneuver at the time of the impact of birds, followed by a stop for undetermined reasons.
The deceleration due to braking prevented the aircraft to respond to the action of the pilot-instructor using the ailerons. The takeoff was interrupted while the remaining runway length was insufficient to stop the aircraft."

The Societé Anonyme Belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation Aérienne, (French; "Belgian Corporation for Air Navigation Services"), better known internationally by the acronym Sabena or SABENA, was the national airline of Belgium from 1923 to 2001, with its base at Brussels National Airport. After its bankruptcy in 2001, the newly formed SN Brussels Airlines took over part of Sabena's assets in February 2002, which became Brussels Airlines after a merger with Virgin Express in March 2007. The airline's corporate headquarters were located in the Sabena House on the grounds of Brussels Airport in Zaventem.
History
1923–1939
Sabena began operations on 23 May 1923 as the national carrier of Belgium. The airline was created by the Belgian government after their predecessor SNETA (Syndicat national pour l'étude des transports aériens) - formed in 1919 to pioneer commercial aviation in Belgium - ceased operations. Sabena operated its first commercial flight from Brussels to London (UK) on 1 July 1923, via Ostend. Services to Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Strasbourg (France) were launched on 1 April 1924. The Strasbourg service was extended to Basle (Switzerland) on 10 June 1924. Amsterdam (Netherlands) was added on 1 September 1924, and Hamburg (Germany) followed on 1 May 1929 via Antwerp, Düsseldorf, and Essen.

6 november 2001: na een lange strijd van herstructureringen, besparingen en extra overheidsgeld wordt dan toch nog het einde aangekondigd van Sabena, de in 1923 opgerichte Belgische luchtvaartmaatschappij.
Een ploeg van het programma 'Het leven zoals het is' volgde al enkele maanden het reilen en zeilen op de luchthaven van Zaventem en zat tijdens de laatste momenten van Sabena op de eerste rij. De laatste aflevering werd volledig gewijd aan het einde van Sabena. Een indrukwekkend voorbeeld van wat we in goed Nederlands 'fly on the wall'-journalistiek noemen.
Uitgezonden door de VRT als 'Het leven zoals het is: Luchthaven 2' op 25 april 2002.
Helaas ontbreekt de aftiteling, band liep ten einde.

De moeilijkheden bij Sabena zijn voorlopig achter de rug en het voorbestaan van de maatschappij is op middellange termijn verzekerd. Dat kon uiteraard niet zonder het vliegend personeel, dat hiertoe ook zijn steen heeft bijgedragen.
Het zal ten andere in de toekomst geconfronteerd worden met wijzigende arbeidsomstandigheden, maar hun leven zal er niet minder druk door worden. Dat blijkt uit de vierdelige reeks "Piloten"
die een aantal Sabenapiloten volgt en hun leven toont zoals het is. Vliegen heeft voor vele mensen nog iets mythisch, buiten het gewone, zelfs magisch.
Het beroep van piloot wordt daarom vaak omgeven met een aura van quasi-onbereikbaarheid dat zou zijn weggelegd voor de happy few, voor een elite. Toch is het voor de personen in kwestie evengoed een dagelijkse broodwinning, in principe een beroep als een ander. De makers van 'Piloten' hebben tijdens het draaien van deze reeks gemerkt dat alle piloten die ze volgden (Sabena had op dat moment tenminste - 700 piloten in dienst), wel trots zijn op wat ze doen, maar zeker niet teveel het glamoureuze aspect benadrukken. Het is gewoon hun beroep. Een boeiend beroep, maar toch. Eigenlijk wordt een deel van de glamour in deze reeks ontluisterd. De piloten worden gevolgd als ze 's morgens thuis vertrekken, afscheid nemen van hun partner, hun vluchtplan opstellen op de luchthaven, alles checken en dubbelchecken, opstijgen, landen en gaan slapen.
Maar er is meer. Alle piloten beseffen maar al te goed dat ze verantwoordelijk zijn voor de levens van een groot aantal mensen. Ze kunnen zich geen enkele fout, geen enkel concentratieverlies veroorloven. Alle piloten die werden gevolgd, zijn eigenlijk gezondheidsfreaks. Ook al omdat ze twee keer per jaar aan grondige medische tests worden onderworpen. Vandaar dat ze heel erg bezig zijn met wat ze eten, én met hun conditie. Maar als ze praten, is het doorgaans toch over hun passie: vliegen. 'Piloten' is gemaakt met de welwillende samenwerking van Sabena en dat levert exclusieve en uitzonderlijke beelden op. Er kon vrij gefilmd worden in cockpits.

Sabena was one of the first airlines to order the Boeing 747-100.
Two Jumbojets with Pratt & Whitney JT9D-3 engines is taken.
A total of 361 passengers could be carried, 32 First class and 329 Economy. In Combi use 246 passengers and 6 palettes
After more than 20 years of service and more than 94,794 flying hours to here name (a record according to Boeing) The aircraft had a total of 17682 start and landings made.
"Aunt Agatha" waited on Brussels tarmac for a potential buyer which was not found, a solution in form of being used as restaurant also failed as "not transportable" so demolition was the final fate. The giant queen was scrapped at Zaventem on December 3 1994 the demolition was completed by December 13 1994

On April 4 1978 at 18:07 local time a Boeing 737-229C - OO-SDH, operated on a training flight with an instructor and two co-pilot students. Both students were going to practice ILS approaches to runway 25 at Charleroi-Gosselies Airport (CRL) followed by a touch-and-go. The initial six approaches were uneventful. The students then changed seats. The second student's first approach and touch-and-go were uneventful. During the second touch-and-go a flock of birds were observed crossing the runway. Several birds were ingested as the airplane was rotating. The instructor took over control and attempted to continue takeoff. The airplane failed to respond to his control inputs and seemed to decelerate. He then decided to abort the takeoff. There was insufficient runway length available so the Boeing overran, struck localiser antennas and skidded. The right main gear collapsed and the no. 2 engine was torn off in the slide. The aircraft came to rest 300m past the runway end and was destroyed by fire.
The airplane was only 3 years and 2 months old, build 1975.02.12 with msn 20914, it had 7424 flights with a total of 6983 hours. It was written off - damaged beyond repair
Aviation-report - PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT: "The probable cause of the accident is the interruption of the takeoff maneuver at the time of the impact of birds, followed by a stop for undetermined reasons.
The deceleration due to braking prevented the aircraft to respond to the action of the pilot-instructor using the ailerons. The takeoff was interrupted while the remaining runway length was insufficient to stop the aircraft."
