During morning mass, two Islamic terrorists entered the Church of the Gambetta near Rouen, Normandy, France, while shouting “Daesh” which is Arabic for “Islamic State,” and held several members of the congregation hostage.
Only thirty miles from where Allied troops landed in 1944, the terrorists performed what has been described as “an Arabic sermon from the altar” before forcing eighty four-year old Father Jacques Hamel to his knees, and then to the ground.
One of the terrorists then proceeded to slit his throat, and the other filmed video as the priest bled out in front of his congregation. Early reports described the gruesome attack as an outright “beheading.”

Earlier today, two jihadis stormed a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, France, with knives and a fake bomb. They forced a Catholic priest to his knees and filmed themselves slashing his throat at the altar. They later shouted “Allahu Akbar” while police shot them to death.
Prior to the attack, French police had caught one of the jihadis repeatedly attempting to travel to Syria to join ISIS. Nevertheless, he was free to roam the streets of France, as long as he wore an electronic bracelet.
Even worse, French authorities knew that the church was being targeted by ISIS, since an ISIS hit list found in 2015 named the church as a target.
Given the circumstances, do French authorities bear some of the blame for the outcome of the attack? In this video, David Wood explores the issue.

A priest has been killed in an attack by two armed men at his church in a suburb of Rouen in northern France. The attackers entered the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during Mass, taking the priest, Fr Jacques Hamel, 84, and four other people hostage.
Police later surrounded the church and French TV said shots were fired. Both hostage-takers are now dead. President Francois Hollande said the men claimed to be from so-called Islamic State (IS).

France has experienced another ISIS related attack this week as two individuals entered a church near Normandy and killed an 86 year old priest. The two took hostages and according to the Washington Post, slit the throat of the priest when he attempted to resist. Thankfully before any more were killed police commandos shot and killed the assailants, one hostage suffered life threatening injuries.
According to the Associated Press, one of the attackers was on a watch list and wore an electronic tag that allows security officials to track movements. Another report has the man allegedly trying to reach Syria but was turned away at the Turkish border and then jailed by French authorities till March.
During the attack, hostages described the men as recording themselves, with a nun describing that they did a sermon around the alter in Arabic, as reported by the Washington Post.
The Islamic State’s news agency called the attackers soldiers but there has yet to be evidence that they were in contact with the terrorist organization.

France (French: [fʁɑ̃s]), officially the French Republic (French: République française [ʁepyblik fʁɑ̃sɛz]), is a sovereign state comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. France has experienced another ISIS related attack this week as two individuals entered a church near Normandy and killed an 86 year old priest. The two took hostages and according to the Washington Post, slit the throat of the priest when he attempted to resist. Thankfully before any more were killed police commandos shot and killed the assailants, one hostage suffered life threatening injuries. According to the Associated Press, one of the attackers was on a watch list and wore an electronic tag that allows security officials to track movements. During morning mass, two Islamic terrorists entered the Church of the Gambetta near Rouen, Normandy, France, while shouting “Daesh” which is Arabic for “Islamic State,” and held several members of the congregation hostage.
Only thirty miles from where Allied troops landed in 1944, the terrorists performed what has been described as “an Arabic sermon from the altar” before forcing eighty four-year old Father Jacques Hamel to his knees, and then to the ground.
One of the terrorists then proceeded to slit his throat, and the other filmed video as the priest bled out in front of his congregation. Early reports described the gruesome attack as an outright “beheading.”

Earlier today, two jihadis stormed a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, France, with knives and a fake bomb. They forced a Catholic priest to his knees and filmed themselves slashing his throat at the altar. They later shouted “Allahu Akbar” while police shot them to death.
Prior to the attack, French police had caught one of the jihadis repeatedly attempting to travel to Syria to join ISIS. Nevertheless, he was free to roam the streets of France, as long as he wore an electronic bracelet.
Even worse, French authorities knew that the church was being targeted by ISIS, since an ISIS hit list found in 2015 named the church as a target.
Given the circumstances, do French authorities bear some of the blame for the outcome of the attack? In this video, David Wood explores the issue.

On the 11th January 1923, French and Belgian troops marched into Germany and occupied the industrial Ruhr area. The two countries had grown increasingly frustrated by Germany frequently defaulting on its reparations that had been agreed in the Treaty of Versailles. The occupation was met with passive resistance, which was only called off on the 26th September as rampant hyperinflation crippled the German economy.
Although the French leader Raymond Poincaré was initially reluctant to occupy the Ruhr, he had grown increasingly exasperated by Germany’s regular defaults and the lack of international support for sanctions as a way to persuade her to pay. He argued strongly that the reparations themselves were not the key issue, but rather that allowing Germany to defy this part of the Treaty of Versailles could lead to further attempts to undermine the Treaty at a later date.
Despite these arguments it was Germany’s failure to provide the full quota of coal and timber in December 1922 that provided France and Belgium with the excuse to occupy the Ruhr on the 11th January 1923. They established the Inter-Allied Mission for Control of Factories and Mines to ensure that goods payments were made, but the Germans responded with a campaign of passive resistance. Tensions were high between the occupiers and Ruhr locals, and by the time Gustav Stresemann’s new government called off the strikes in September approximately 130 German civilians had been killed by the occupying army.
The occupation enabled France and Belgium to extract reparations, but it was Germany that won international sympathy. The last French troops finally left the Ruhr on the 25th August 1925.

Central to the 20th century history of Vietnam is Ho Chi Minh. Ho (Western educated like most the Vietnamese elites who soon led the rebellion) moved to Paris in 1917 and joined the Communist Party in 1920. He began formal training in 1923. Imperial Japan landed forces in Vietnam after France capitulated to the Germans in June 1940 and he founded the Viet Minh in 1941 which was both anti-French and anti-Japanese. The US actually trained the Viet Minh for the war against the Japanese but with their sudden defeat in 1945, Ho declared independence & the US balked in support. The French returned in March 1946 for a limited period but the country was soon divided into North and South. The war begins leading to a Vietnamese victory at the epic 55-day Battle of Dien Bien Phu in early 1954. The subsequent Geneva Accords of July 1954 called for a reunification election in two years.
