The charity claims the Point C plant will cost up to £24 billion - £6 billion more than the initial estimate from EDF. Greenpeace say the French energy firm, which is building the station, gave too low an estimate and has launched a petition to stop it from going ahead, so far signed by 110,582 people. The cost of the nuclear plant is 18 times greater the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building in Dubai. According to figures worked out by Radio 4's More or Less programme, it is almost five times pricier than the 7-mile-long Large Hadron Collider, built to unlock the secrets of the universe. "Cost of nuclear power plants has tended to go up throughout history as accidents happen and we design measures to deal with the risk." The UK's newest nuclear power station Sizewell B, which was completed in 1995, cost £2.3bn - or £4.1bn at today's prices. No nuclear power plants have been completed in Europe this century - but Prof Thomas believes that the figures for those built in countries such as China or India are unreliable. The Great Pyramid of Giza was built more than 4,500 years ago and the Turner Construction Company estimated it could build the pyramid for between £750m and £900m. Back in the present day, Heathrow Terminal 2 cost £2.2bn, while the new London railway Crossrail cost £14.8bn. And the Saudi Arabian royal family is currently refurbishing the Grand Mosque in Mecca at a reported cost of about £16bn - but as this includes a new road and train line, it pushed the definition of "object". But while Hinkley C may well be the most expensive object on Earth, it doesn't touch the International Space Station, which cost a whopping £77.6bn.
