Events in the year 1913 in India.
3 May- Raja Harischandra, First full-length movie of India released. Beginning of Indian Film Industry.
India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west;China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.
Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by and brought under the administration of the British East India Company from the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by non-violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Raja Harishchandra is a 1913 Indian silent film, directed and produced by Dadasaheb Phalke, and is the first full-length Indian feature film. The film was based on the legend of Raja Harishchandra, recounted in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Although a silent film with intertitles in Marathi, English and Hindi, its cast and staff were Marathi people and it is therefore regarded as the first Marathi film.
The film marked a historic benchmark in the film industry in India. Only one print of the film was made and shown at the Coronation Cinematograph. It was a commercial success and paved the way for more such films.
The film opens with a scene of a tableaux patterned on the painting by Raja Ravi Varma, of Raja Harishchandra and his wife with their son. The film revolves around the noble and righteous king, Harishchandra, who first sacrifices his kingdom, followed by his wife and eventually his children to honour his promise to the sage Vishwamitra. Though, in the end, pleased by his high morals, the Gods restore his former glory, and further bestow him with divine blessings.
Dhundiraj Govind Phalke (Marathi: धुंडीराज गोविंद फाळके), popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke (Marathi: दादासाहेब फाळक) ( pronunciation ) (30 April 1870 – 16 February 1944), was an Indian producer-director-screenwriter, known as the Father of Indian cinema. Starting with his debut film, Raja Harishchandra in 1913, now known as India's first full-length feature, he made 95 movies and 26 short films in his career spanning 19 years, till 1937, including his most noted works: Mohini Bhasmasur (1913), Satyavan Savitri (1914), Lanka Dahan (1917), Shri Krishna Janma (1918) and Kaliya Mardan (1919).
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, for lifetime contribution to cinema, was instituted in his honour by the Government of India in 1969. The award is one of the most prestigious awards in Indian cinema and is the highest official recognition for film personalities in the country. A postage stamp bearing his face was released by India Post to honour him in 1971. An honorary award from the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Mumbai was introduced in the year 2001, for lifetime achievement in Indian cinema.
Works in the public domain are those whose exclusive intellectual property rights have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable. For example, the works of Shakespeare and Beethoven, and most of the early silent films, are all now in the public domain by leaving the copyright term. Examples for works not covered by copyright which are therefore in the public domain, are the formulae of Newtonian physics, cooking recipes and all software before 1974. Examples for works actively dedicated into public domain by their authors are the Serpent encryption reference implementation,NIH's ImageJ, and the CIA's The World Factbook. The term is not normally applied to situations where the creator of a work retains residual rights, in which case use of the work is referred to as "under license" or "with permission".
As rights are country-based and vary, a work may be subject to rights in one country and be in the public domain in another. Some rights depend on registrations on a country-by-country basis, and the absence of registration in a particular country, if required, creates public domain status for a work in that country.
From an old French coloured film showing religious customs and ceremonies in Mailam in South India 30 km from Pondicherry. See my other clips on old India. A viewer reports: This video looks like Maasi Magam Festival being celebrated in Pondicherry in the Tamil month of Maasi (probably 15 February to 14 of March) seashore every year. Urchavar Idols from the shrines around Pondicherry are gathered on the Vaithikuppam beach for Kadal Theerthavaari. People from villages and towns have come together to workship God, the special idols are Mailam Murugan, Tindivanam Ranganathar & Theevanur Pillayar See my other 1100 clips by searching YouTube with 'michael rogge' Find my photo's here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/12350343@N04/ Website 'Man and the Unknown' http://wichm.home.xs4all.nl/

The film opens with a Ravi Varma like tableau showing King Harishchandra, his wife Taramati and his young son. The king is teaching his son archery. They go on a hunt. The king enters an area controlled by the Sage Vishwamitra. Three furies appear before the king caught in flames. The king tries to rescue them. These fairies try to seduce the king into renouncing his kingdom for his love of truth. The king endures much hardship including being banished from his kingdom before a god appears to reassure everyone that the whole narrative was merely a test of the king's integrity.
Silent film directed and produced by Indian icon Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, and is the first full-length Indian feature film. Phalke is often compared to the French film pioneer Georges Melies. Both considered the world's new medium an art form and had expertise in magic tricks, which they used as special effects in their films. Raja Harishchandra is based on the legend of King Harishchandra, recounted in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Considered the beginning of Bollywood, most of the film is currently and unfortunately lost. In dieser grauen Welt
Wo niemand singt
Sah ich das Gesicht einer menschlichen Puppe
Ihre Augen waren aus Glas
Und ihr Haar war golden
Von ihren süßen, weichen Lippen
Konnte man diesen Song hören
REFRAIN:
Nanana, nana nanana, nana . . .
REFRAIN
Sag mir, was es ist
Was mich zu dir zurückbingt
Sag mir, was es ist
Dass ich nicht aufhören kann, dich zu lieben
Sag mir, was es ist
Was mich zu dir zurückbringt
Sag mir, was es ist
Dass ich nicht aufhören kann, dich zu lieben
REFRAIN
Drum bring mich zurück in dein Land
Wo der schwarze Schwan die einzige liebte
Die ich verlor
Meine Generation sing, wenn das Radio spielt
Die Melodie von der menschlichen Puppe
REFRAIN
