1959 was the seismic year jazz broke away from complex bebop music to new forms, allowing soloists unprecedented freedom to explore and express. It was also a pivotal year for America: the nation was finding its groove, enjoying undreamt-of freedom and wealth social, racial and upheavals were just around the corner and jazz was ahead of the curve.
Four major jazz albums were made, each a high watermark for the artists and a powerful reflection of the times. Each opened up dramatic new possibilities for jazz which continue to be felt Miles Davis Kind of Blue Dave Brubeck, Time Out Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um; and Ornette Coleman, The Shape of Jazz to Come.
Rarely seen archive performances help vibrantly bring the era to life and explore what made these albums vital both in 1959 and the 50 years since. The programme contains interviews with Lou Reed, Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, Joe Morello (Brubecks drummer) and Jimmy Cobb (the only surviving member of Miles band) along with a host of jazz movers and shakers from the 50s and beyond.

IIHS 50th anniversary demonstration test • September 9, 2009
In the 50 years since US insurers organized the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, car crashworthiness has improved. Demonstrating this was a crash test conducted between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. In a real-world collision similar to this test, occupants of the new model would fare much better than in the vintage Chevy.
"It was night and day, the difference in occupant protection," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "What this test shows is that automakers don't build cars like they used to. They build them better."
The crash test was conducted at an event to celebrate the contributions of auto insurers to highway safety progress over 50 years. Beginning with the Institute's 1959 founding, insurers have maintained the resolve, articulated in the 1950s, to "conduct, sponsor, and encourage programs designed to aid in the conservation and preservation of life and property from the hazards of highway accidents."

這部原名《Taiwan - The Face of Free China》的高畫質彩色影片，是美軍的1960年度教育影片，於1959年在臺灣拍攝的，能夠有如此清晰而且是彩色的1950年代臺灣影像紀錄，實是難能可貴的！因此我特地將影片轉載於此，與各位分享。由於原片長為26分鐘，而我的YouTube帳號上傳影片的長度上限是15分鐘，所以我只好將影片剪輯為兩段（Part I & Part II）分開上傳，特此說明。
當年美軍用這段影片讓即將到臺灣駐守的軍人先了解「自由中國」臺灣的面貌，雖然現在的中華民國（臺灣）並不是中國的一部分，不過在這段影片問世時，臺灣的確是「自由中國」（當時中華民國的領土包括了海峽兩岸的中國與臺灣，至少老師是這樣教的），因此我保留了原英文片名，就當它是歷史的印記吧！

James Douglas Muir "Jay" Leno /ˈlɛnoʊ/ (born April 28, 1950) is an American stand-up comedian and television host.
From 1992 to 2009, Leno was the host of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Beginning in September 2009, Leno started a primetime talk show, titled The Jay Leno Show, which aired weeknights at 10:00 p.m. (Eastern Time, UTC-5), also on NBC. After The Jay Leno Show was canceled in January 2010 amid a host controversy, Leno returned to host The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010.
James "Jay" Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1950. His mother, Catherine (née Muir; 1911–1993), a homemaker, was born in Greenock, Scotland, and came to the United States at age 11. Leno's father, Angelo (1910–1994), who worked as an insurance salesman, was born in New York to immigrants from Flumeri, Italy. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and although his high school guidance counselor recommended that he drop out of school, he later obtained a Bachelor's degree in speech therapy from Emerson College, where he started a comedy club in 1973. Leno's siblings include his late older brother, Patrick, who was a Vietnam veteran and a lawyer.

Lester William Polsfuss (June 9, 1915 – August 13, 2009)—known as Les Paul—was an American jazz and country guitarist, songwriter and inventor. He was the inventor of the solid-body electric guitar which made the sound of rock and roll possible. He is credited with many recording innovations. Although he was not the first to use the technique, his early experiments with overdubbing (also known as sound on sound),delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects and multitrack recording were among the first to attract widespread attention.
His innovative talents extended into his playing style, including licks, trills, chording sequences, fretting techniques and timing, which set him apart from his contemporaries and inspired many guitarists of the present day. He recorded with his wife Mary Ford in the 1950s, and they sold millions of records.
Among his many honors, Paul is one of a handful of artists with a permanent, stand-alone exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is prominently named by the music museum on its website as an "architect" and a "key inductee" along with Sam Phillips and Alan Freed.

這部原名《Taiwan - The Face of Free China》的高畫質彩色影片，是美軍的1960年度教育影片，於1959年在臺灣拍攝的，能夠有如此清晰而且是彩色的1950年代臺灣影像紀錄，實是難能可貴的！因此我特地將影片轉載於此，與各位分享。由於原片長為26分鐘，而我的YouTube帳號上傳影片的長度上限是15分鐘，所以我只好將影片剪輯為兩段（Part I & Part II）分開上傳，特此說明。 當年美軍用這段影片讓即將到臺灣駐守的軍人先了解「自由中國」臺灣的面貌，雖然現在的中華民國（臺灣）並不是中國的一部分，不過在這段影片問世時，臺灣的確是「自由中國」（當時中華民國的領土包括了海峽兩岸的中國與臺灣，至少老師是這樣教的），因此我保留了原英文片名，就當它是歷史的印記吧！ Part I: http://youtu.be/AradWHYZYjk

IIHS 50th anniversary demonstration test • September 9, 2009 In the 50 years since US insurers organized the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, car crashworthiness has improved. Demonstrating this was a crash test conducted between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. In a real-world collision similar to this test, occupants of the new model would fare much better than in the vintage Chevy. "It was night and day, the difference in occupant protection," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "What this test shows is that automakers don't build cars like they used to. IIHS 50th anniversary demonstration test • September 9, 2009
In the 50 years since US insurers organized the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, car crashworthiness has improved. Demonstrating this was a crash test conducted between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. In a real-world collision similar to this test, occupants of the new model would fare much better than in the vintage Chevy.
"It was night and day, the difference in occupant protection," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "What this test shows is that automakers don't build cars like they used to. They build them better."
The crash test was conducted at an event to celebrate the contributions of auto insurers to highway safety progress over 50 years. Beginning with the Institute's 1959 founding, insurers have maintained the resolve, articulated in the 1950s, to "conduct, sponsor, and encourage programs designed to aid in the conservation and preservation of life and property from the hazards of highway accidents."

這部原名《Taiwan - The Face of Free China》的高畫質彩色影片，是美軍的1960年度教育影片，於1959年在臺灣拍攝的，能夠有如此清晰而且是彩色的1950年代臺灣影像紀錄，實是難能可貴的！因此我特地將影片轉載於此，與各位分享。由於原片長為26分鐘，而我的YouTube帳號上傳影片的長度上限是15分鐘，所以我只好將影片剪輯為兩段（Part I & Part II）分開上傳，特此說明。
當年美軍用這段影片讓即將到臺灣駐守的軍人先了解「自由中國」臺灣的面貌，雖然現在的中華民國（臺灣）並不是中國的一部分，不過在這段影片問世時，臺灣的確是「自由中國」（當時中華民國的領土包括了海峽兩岸的中國與臺灣，至少老師是這樣教的），因此我保留了原英文片名，就當它是歷史的印記吧！
