The countdown for an exciting night with an observation run at the world's most advanced optical telescope, the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), has begun ...
In this ESOcast episode, were going to follow a day in the life of Dieter Nürnberger. Dieter is a staff astronomer at ESO. His job is to support those scientists that have managed to get observing time on ESOs Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory in Chile. Dieter spends most of his working days helping the successful few to make ground-breaking discoveries.
Dieter Nürnberger is on his way to meet the visiting scientists to team up for the night to come. The three have been observing together for several nights, today is their final evening and they are keen to get started. Over dinner they discuss plans for the night ahead.
Well before sunset they leave the Residencia and drive up the desert road to the building housing the VLT control room. At the control building they prepare the observations and check the set up of the telescope. Observing time on these great telescopes is precious and delays must be avoided at all costs.
Like a pilot checking his plane before departure, Dieter goes through a detailed check of his instrument, while the telescope operator does the same for the giant telescope. The astronomers have travelled far for a glorious view of the Universe, and here a glorious view of the sunset is included for free! As usual at Paranal, the conditions are perfect and Dieter and the visiting astronomers return with high expectations.

Topic: How to Become an Astronomer
Heidi Hammel: I remember when I did this big, visible program in Baltimore called "The Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet Crash Into Jupiter." It was a big deal. I was on the nightly news every night for a week. And my local high school in Pennsylvania sent a TV crew down to Baltimore to interview me, and they asked me what was the most important class you took in high school to prepare you to become a world famous scientist? And my answer was Chorus. I had a great Chorus teacher, Sue Shayu [ph?], who was a former Rockette, and she demanded professionalism of her students. And there we were in the chorus, just high school kids, but she made us warm up every time. She told us how to stand, how to hold ourselves, you know, wear lipstick, girls, because the lights will wash you out. She just gave us tips, and she expected us to be professionals. No amateur night in Dixie. And I took that lesson forward with me into whatever I was doing. Whatever I was going into, whether it was going to be chorus or history or astronomy or whatever, do it right. Be a professional. Don't just do a half baked job. Do everything correctly. Get down. Learn the details of what you're going to do. That was by far the most important course for me, Chorus. It also taught me communication skills, and for scientists nowadays, communication skills, whether they are writing skills or oral speaking skills, are incredibly important. So when kids as me what classes do I need to take, I say, "Well, look. You got to take math, because you got to learn the language. And you also have to take communication classes, whether it's an English class or your music classes, band classes to teach you how to cooperate in groups." You don't focus on physics. You make sure you broaden yourself and have a good solid background in many different things. That's what you need to be a good scientist. The science teachers don't like it when I say that. They think you take chemistry, biology. I'm like, yeah, you do need to do those things, but that can come later. Your foundation has to be in basic communication and the basic language skills, and I include math as one of the language skills.
Question: What should budding astronomers study?
Heidi Hammel: Astronomy and astrophysics is a very interesting field, because you can come out at it from many different angles. When I was in college, I didn't like physics a lot, and I really wasn't very good at physics. And there were a lot of people around me who were really good at physics, I mean, scary good at physics. And they weren't much help to me, because I would say, "How do you do this?" They'd say, "Well, the answer's obvious." And I would sit there going, "Hmm, hmm, not to me." So I chose not to major in physics. A lot of astronomers and astrophysicists, has the word "physics" right in there, do major in physics. I chose, instead, to major in earth and planetary science. And so my background was in courses like geology, geophysics, atmospheric chemistry. But, again, a lot of math courses and basic physics courses, things like Newtonian physics, all the way through quantum physics. I did take those courses. I wasn't good at them, but I passed them. I learned them enough to pass. A C is a passing grade is what I learned in college, and something that I tell young people nowadays a lot. C is a passing grade. You don't need straight A's to be a scientist, despite what you may have heard.

Tim Doucette is legally blind, yet he sees the stars better than most people. A childhood diagnosis of congenital cataracts forced doctors to remove Doucette's lenses and widen his pupils. That left the amateur astronomer with only about 10 percent of his eyesight, but it also allows his pupils to pick up more light at night. You've never seen the night sky quite like Doucette.

An astronomer is a scientist who studies celestial bodies such as planets, stars and galaxies.
Historically, astronomy was more concerned with the classification and description of phenomena in the sky, while astrophysics attempted to explain these phenomena and the differences between them using physical laws. Today, that distinction has mostly disappeared and the terms "astronomer" and "astrophysicist" are interchangeable. Professional astronomers are highly educated individuals who typically have a PhD in physics or astronomy and are employed by research institutions or universities. They spend the majority of their time working on research, although they quite often have other duties such as teaching, building instruments, or aiding in the operation of an observatory. The number of professional astronomers in the United States is actually quite small. The American Astronomical Society, which is the major organization of professional astronomers in North America, has approximately 7,700 members. This number includes scientists from other fields such as physics, geology, and engineering, whose research interests are closely related to astronomy. The International Astronomical Union comprises almost 10,145 members from 70 different countries who are involved in astronomical research at the PhD level and beyond.

Topic: How to Become an Astronomer Heidi Hammel: I remember when I did this big, visible program in Baltimore called "The Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet Crash Into Jupiter." It was a big deal. I was on the nightly news every night for a week. And my local high school in Pennsylvania sent a TV crew down to Baltimore to interview me, and they asked me what was the most important class you took in high school to prepare you to become a world famous scientist? And my answer was Chorus. I had a great Chorus teacher, Sue Shayu [ph?], who was a former Rockette, and she demanded professionalism of her students. The countdown for an exciting night with an observation run at the world's most advanced optical telescope, the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), has begun ...
In this ESOcast episode, were going to follow a day in the life of Dieter Nürnberger. Dieter is a staff astronomer at ESO. His job is to support those scientists that have managed to get observing time on ESOs Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory in Chile. Dieter spends most of his working days helping the successful few to make ground-breaking discoveries.
Dieter Nürnberger is on his way to meet the visiting scientists to team up for the night to come. The three have been observing together for several nights, today is their final evening and they are keen to get started. Over dinner they discuss plans for the night ahead.
Well before sunset they leave the Residencia and drive up the desert road to the building housing the VLT control room. At the control building they prepare the observations and check the set up of the telescope. Observing time on these great telescopes is precious and delays must be avoided at all costs.
Like a pilot checking his plane before departure, Dieter goes through a detailed check of his instrument, while the telescope operator does the same for the giant telescope. The astronomers have travelled far for a glorious view of the Universe, and here a glorious view of the sunset is included for free! As usual at Paranal, the conditions are perfect and Dieter and the visiting astronomers return with high expectations.

Heidi Hammel: I remember when I did this big, visible program in Baltimore called "The Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet Crash Into Jupiter." It was a big deal. I was on the nightly news every night for a week. And my local high school in Pennsylvania sent a TV crew down to Baltimore to interview me, and they asked me what was the most important class you took in high school to prepare you to become a world famous scientist? And my answer was Chorus. I had a great Chorus teacher, Sue Shayu [ph?], who was a former Rockette, and she demanded professionalism of her students. And there we were in the chorus, just high school kids, but she made us warm up every time. She told us how to stand, how to hold ourselves, you know, wear lipstick, girls, because the lights will wash you out. She just gave us tips, and she expected us to be professionals. No amateur night in Dixie. And I took that lesson forward with me into whatever I was doing. Whatever I was going into, whether it was going to be chorus or history or astronomy or whatever, do it right. Be a professional. Don't just do a half baked job. Do everything correctly. Get down. Learn the details of what you're going to do. That was by far the most important course for me, Chorus. It also taught me communication skills, and for scientists nowadays, communication skills, whether they are writing skills or oral speaking skills, are incredibly important. So when kids as me what classes do I need to take, I say, "Well, look. You got to take math, because you got to learn the language. And you also have to take communication classes, whether it's an English class or your music classes, band classes to teach you how to cooperate in groups." You don't focus on physics. You make sure you broaden yourself and have a good solid background in many different things. That's what you need to be a good scientist. The science teachers don't like it when I say that. They think you take chemistry, biology. I'm like, yeah, you do need to do those things, but that can come later. Your foundation has to be in basic communication and the basic language skills, and I include math as one of the language skills.
Question: What should budding astronomers study?
Heidi Hammel: Astronomy and astrophysics is a very interesting field, because you can come out at it from many different angles. When I was in college, I didn't like physics a lot, and I really wasn't very good at physics. And there were a lot of people around me who were really good at physics, I mean, scary good at physics. And they weren't much help to me, because I would say, "How do you do this?" They'd say, "Well, the answer's obvious." And I would sit there going, "Hmm, hmm, not to me." So I chose not to major in physics. A lot of astronomers and astrophysicists, has the word "physics" right in there, do major in physics. I chose, instead, to major in earth and planetary science. And so my background was in courses like geology, geophysics, atmospheric chemistry. But, again, a lot of math courses and basic physics courses, things like Newtonian physics, all the way through quantum physics. I did take those courses. I wasn't good at them, but I passed them. I learned them enough to pass. A C is a passing grade is what I learned in college, and something that I tell young people nowadays a lot. C is a passing grade. You don't need straight A's to be a scientist, despite what you may have heard.

I will start with a short summary of my research on galaxies and the involvement of youth – PhD students, undergraduates, and even high-school students – in that research. Next, I will discuss the importance of engaging young people in real-world problem solving, since this is something that a traditional STEM education does not do a particularly good job of preparing high-school students for. Research involves trial and error and it is important for the researcher to persevere through and learn from failure.
Dr. Puragra (Raja) Guha Thakurta is a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UCSC. His research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies. In addition, he founded SIP, a renowned high school research program. GuhaThakurta’s research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies, large and small, near and far, through detailed studies of their assembly history, galaxy cannibalism, dynamics and dark matter content, chemical enrichment, and star-formation history. His research group studies the Andromeda galaxy, Milky Way galaxy, and many other galaxies in the Local Volume. The group frequently uses the Keck telescope and Hubble Space Telescope. When speculation of a large body of mass with an usual orbital alignment was detected, astronomers took to computer simulations, mathematical equations and a call to the public to discover the small gassous giant on the fringes of our solar system. Batygin breaks down this hypothesized planet that is estimated to be between 1 to 10 times the mass of the Earth, along with the Kuiper Belt, the discovery of Neptune, and why Dr. Mike Brown deemed Pluto no longer a planet in this episode of Antidote hosted by Michael Parker.

But most of us don't have the opportunity (or training) to reflect on the human dimensions of our work. Br. Guy Consolmagno does; he is both a Jesuit brother and a planetary scientist at the Vatican Observatory, splitting his time between the meteorite collection in Rome (which he curates) and the Vatican telescope in Arizona. Thanks to his Vatican connections, his work has sent him around the world several times to dozens of countries and every continent (including a meteorite hunting expedition to Antarctica). In this talk he will share some of those adventures, and reflect on the larger meaning of our common experience as scientists... not only what we do, but why we do it.
