Two characters seamlessly transition between 7 different film and television genres in 5 minutes. Eventually the genres begin to mix and fuse together.
I won a contest with a radio station where I got to go on a bike ride with & meet twenty one pilots before their show that night (which was incredible BTW). So I figured I'd take a couple things I'm curious about relating to them & some questions some friends of mine that are fans wanted me to ask & record a short interview if I got the chance. Fortunately they're pretty cool guys & Tyler was happy to give me a few minutes.

So this upload is brought to you by pure, unadulterated self-interest and random fascination... because apparently this is the Xbox LIVE "Games with Gold" title for the first half of October, i.e. as of this writing (just barely, mind you) today! See, most people are annoyed with the program for being entirely made up of old games that apparently "nobody" wanted or, if they did, already had... this one is surely destined to be part of the first classification. As a relatively new Xbox owner of ridiculously weird and varied taste, this is actually one of the rare highlights of the program so far in that it contains something way out of the general sphere of interests for the typical user, and when I finally tried to figure out what this was while its freedom loomed ever closer. I was quite frankly surprised and more than a little intrigued. Please note that I know literally nothing about the phrase "Might and Magic" as it pertains to a series of video games besides the fact that there IS such a phrase meaning... something. I don't know. I can at least gather that it's likely a Western RPG of a high fantasy slant... and besides that, I got nothin', especially since such things are generally a dime a dozen and each more generic than the last. Well, this is kinda true, at least insofar as the RPG elements and the Tolkein-inspired, D&D-flavored; setting are concerned. My first surprise is that the art style is not riddled the series mainstay of realism depicting clearly unrealistic situations... or something. I don't really "get" the norms, I just know they exist. So I'm already refreshed for purely insignificant surface reasons, the very same reasons I'm quite certain will manage to immediately turn away the setting and genre's core supporters. Okay, so what's next? It's a turn-based strategy game... okay, that's not too far from an RPG, which WRPGs may hide behind a pretense of real-time and simultaneous action, the "rounds to act" and "saving throw" and "initiative bonus" and all that reveals that under the hood, you really are just pausing the action and parsing it out one move at a time, even if it is in incredibly small and detailed increments. But now here's the really intriguing (and/or off-putting, assuming you made it far enough for this to be the final nail in the coffin) element... it's a puzzle game! A turn-based strategy high-fantasy matching-colors puzzle game with an art style drawn from the more recent anime-influenced western animation style... thing... uh... is that about right? Surely this will be a HUGE hit with... the one or two people who are still with me in being interested rather than disgusted some multitude of times over. Hell, I'll even take bile fascination for the moment, just hear me out! (As I myself am still trying to allow myself to be convinced.) Anyway, it should be clear by now that I'm a bit of a collector of puzzle games, particularly head-to-head ones... and the weirder they are, the more I seem to be willing to cut them some slack, because it's a really weird genre to try to break into in the first place. It's just not where all the sure dollars are at... or have ever been at. Unless you're a cheaply-designed Facebook or mobile app with lots of flashing colors and false encouragement and validation covering for flimsy or simplistic mechanics. So what will this one be? Will we carry on through? Let's hold our breath and dive in and get the answers that I clearly already hold (else why would I even be doing this?!) but will dole out with the painful slowness only a Western RPG hand-holding tutorial can muster! Have I managed to apparently sabotage myself and this thing as hard as possible? Because I just want to make sure that nobody needlessly suffers ill effect from my own personal insanity overriding most general forms of common sense mandatory for living out everyday life without being overcome with ...whatever the qualifications are for my particular brand of personal insanity... ... ... so are we safe? The coast is clear? You're cool? (You know you gotta tell me if you're a cop, right?) Actually, I'm not entirely decided myself... but I think this is a decent outlet for me to ask myself aloud to no one else in particular whether or not I like what this game is doing... because I played the demo once... like... two days ago, unsure if I wanted to proceed further, particularly as more and more puzzle mechanics got tossed on the heap and I started to struggle to keep up. The final result feels like... the godless heathen combination of the typical Match-3 style with some basic semblance of the Magical Drop movement mechanics and the turn-based meticulousness of a (relatively light, at least by comparison) collectible card game... Uh, you've been effectively warned... and then some. It only gets more convoluted from here on out and I'll actually have something to talk about that isn't too generic and/or difficult-to-relate-to to really add anything just yet.

The Examiner 2015-04-05So if there's a genre for Tyler to cross over into, he's chosen the right one ... to try another genre:
Huffington Post 2015-04-05A fusion genre is music that combines two or more styles. For example, rock and roll originally developed as a fusion of blues, gospel and country music. The main characteristics of fusion genres are variations in tempo, rhythm, i a sometimes the use of long musical "journeys" that can be divided into smaller parts, each with their own dynamics, style and tempo. "Fusion" used alone often refers to jazz fusion.
Artists who work in fusion genres are often difficult to categorize within non-fusion styles, primarily because most genres evolved out of other genres. These artists generally consider themselves part of both genres. For example, a musician that plays predominantly blues influenced by rock is often labelled a blues-rock musician, such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Vaughan, a Texas blues guitarist, used rock and blues together. Ray Charles, who recorded gospel and jazz-influenced blues, created what would become known as Soul Music. By fusing the two genres, Charles pioneered the style of country soul, most famously on his landmark album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, and influenced similar efforts by Candi Staton and Solomon Burke. Another example of fusion music can be heard in the Middle Eastern-influenced Franco-Arabic music as personified by Aldo. Franco-Arabic music uses a blend of Arabic and many western styles, from rock to pop, and from Euro styles to folk music. Jie Ma blends traditional Chinese instruments (pipa and ruan) and Western and jazz compositions.
A disc jockey, also known as DJ, is a person who selects and plays recorded music for an audience. Originally, "disc" (sometimes spelled "disk", although this is now uncommon) referred to phonograph records, not the later Compact Discs. Today, the term includes all forms of music playback, no matter the medium.
There are several types of disc jockeys. Radio DJs or radio personalities introduce and play music that is broadcast on AM, FM, shortwave, digital, or internet radio stations. Club DJs select and play music in bars, nightclubs, or discothèques, or at parties or raves, or even in stadiums. Hip hop disc jockeys select and play music using multiple turntables, often to back up one or more MCs, and they may also do turntable scratching to create percussive sounds. In reggae, the DJ (deejay) is a vocalist who raps, "toasts", or chats over pre-recorded rhythm tracks while the individual choosing and playing them is referred to as a selector. Mobile DJs travel with portable sound systems and play recorded music at a variety of events.
