If you've ever read any reviews by yours truly, you know that I celebrate the unusual. Unusual is certainly one way to describe Pineapples & Ashtrays by Beninghove's Hangmen. The first song "Astronete" alone gives you plenty to consider. That in fact is a gross understatement ... No, that is no exaggeration ... Yes, you hear the familiar guitar part - at least until the bridge where it takes a turn toward Eddie> Hazel ... ....

... it down a subtle notch (well to begin with anyway) and let the vocalist soar over 'First World Problems' a bitter sweet track again powered by the excellent drumming that shines throughout and it's made all the more juicier with a tasty guitar solo expressing the mood of the song,another Eddie> Hazel in the making here methinks! Excellent stuff!....

The song itself was strong enough for the Jackson 5 to cover on their ABC album that spring, though their take lacked the inspired noise-guitar excursions Eddie> Hazel lent the original ... Better was this five-minute sprawl of Eddie Hazel guitar pyrotechnics, orgasmic backing vocals, and stabbing keyboards from new addition Bernie Worrell (whose gifts as composer and arranger would enable the group’s later ambitious steps)....

I've been listening to George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic since I was 15 or something. We mostly talk about music and drugs ... GC ... MN ... GC. Good. MN ... Eddie> Hazel and Bernie Worrell ... I love Hazel's guitar playing he's criminally underrated ... ....
