Janet Yang (born July 13, 1956) is a prominent Hollywood producer and entertainment and media consultant with deep roots in China. Yang has distinguished herself by serving as a Cultural Ambassador, bringing the creative and business worlds together, and bridging East and West. Yang has been named one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in Hollywood" by the Hollywood Reporter.
Her award-winning film and TV credits include The Joy Luck Club, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Dark Matter, Indictment: The McMartin Trial, Zero Effect, Shanghai Calling, High Crimes, and Documented. As a film producer, Yang has worked with some of the most formidable directors and actors in the world, and has discovered unique, often unheard voices and stories, bringing them into the mainstream. Yang is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. She splits her time between Los Angeles and China.
Born Janet Yang in Queens, New York, Yang holds a B.A. from Brown University in Chinese studies and an M.B.A. from Columbia University. Yang was President of World Entertainment in San Francisco. She revived this small, local distributor of Hong Kong films, expanded it into exhibition, and was able to garner exclusive representation rights in North America for all films produced in the People's Republic of China. These films include those of now internationally prominent filmmakers Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige, among others. From there, Yang began her career in Hollywood.

Shanghai Calling is a 2012 American romantic-comedy film written and directed by Daniel Hsia and produced by Janet Yang. Starring Daniel Henney, Eliza Coupe, and Bill Paxton, Shanghai Calling is a story about a group of Americans who find themselves immigrants in a foreign country.
Sam Chao (Daniel Henney), an ambitious New York attorney, is sent to Shanghai on an assignment. Things go disastrously wrong and he finds his career in jeopardy. With the help of his beautiful relocation specialist Amanda Wilson (Eliza Coupe), fast food executive Donald Cafferty (Bill Paxton), and a few others, Sam just might be able to save his job and learn to appreciate the wonders that Shanghai has to offer.

The Cinema of China is one of three distinct historical threads of Chinese-language cinema together with the Cinema of Hong Kong and the Cinema of Taiwan.
Cinema was introduced in China in 1896 and the first Chinese film, The Battle of Dingjunshan, was made in 1905, with the film industry being centered on Shanghai in the first decades. The first sound film, Sing-Song Girl Red Peony, using the sound-on-disc technology, was made in 1931. The 1930s, considered the first "golden period" of Chinese cinema, saw the advent of the Leftist cinematic movement and the dispute between Nationalists and Communists was reflected in the films produced. After the Japanese invasion of China and the occupation of Shanghai, the industry in the city was severely curtailed, with filmmakers moving to Hong Kong, Chongqing and other places, starting a "Solitary Island" period in Shanghai, referring to the city's foreign concessions, with the remaining filmmakers working there. Princess Iron Fan (1941), the first Chinese animated feature film, was released at the end of this period. It influenced wartime Japanese animation and later Tezuka Osamu. After being completely engulfed by the occupation in 1941, and until the end of the war in 1945, the film industry in the city was under Japanese control.
