A ship of the line was a type of naval warship constructed from the 17th through to the mid-19th century to take part in the naval tactic known as the line of battle, in which two columns of opposing warships would manoeuvre to bring the greatest weight of broadside firepower to bear. Since these engagements were almost invariably won by the heaviest ships carrying the most powerful guns, the natural progression was to build sailing vessels that were the largest and most powerful of their time.
From the end of the 1840s, the introduction of steam power brought less dependence on the wind in battle and led to the construction of screw-driven, wooden-hulled, ships of the line; a number of pure sail-driven ships were converted to this propulsion mechanism. However, the introduction of the ironclad frigate in about 1859 led swiftly to the decline of the steam-assisted ships of the line. The ironclad warship became the ancestor of the 20th-century battleship, whose very designation is itself a contraction of the phrase "ship of the line of battle" or, more colloquially, "line-of-battle ship".
HMS Victory is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, ordered in 1758, laid down in 1759 and launched in 1765. She is best known as Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
She was also Keppel's flagship at Ushant, Howe's flagship at Cape Spartel and Jervis's flagship at Cape St Vincent. After 1824, she served as a harbour ship.
In 1922, she was moved to a dry dock at Portsmouth, England, and preserved as a museum ship. She has been the flagship of the First Sea Lord since October 2012 and is the world's oldest naval ship still in commission.
In December 1758, the commissioner of Chatham Dockyard was instructed to prepare a dry dock for the construction of a new first-rate ship. This was an unusual occurrence at the time, as the Royal Navy preferred smaller and more manoeuvrable ships, and it was unusual for more than two to be in commission simultaneously; during the whole of the 18th century, only ten were constructed. Then Prime Minister Pitt the Elder placed the order for Victory on 13 December 1758, along with 11 other ships.
Star Trek is an American science fiction entertainment franchise created by Gene Roddenberry and owned by CBS (TV series) and Paramount Pictures (Film Rights).Star Trek: The Original Series and its live-action TV spin-off series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise as well as the Star Trek film franchise make up the main canon. A ship is a large buoyant watercraft. Ships are generally distinguished from boats based on size, shape and cargo or passenger capacity. Ships are used on lakes, seas, rivers, and oceans for a variety of activities, such as the transport of people or goods, fishing, entertainment, public safety, and warfare. Historically, a "ship" was a sailing vessel with at least three square-rigged masts and a full bowsprit.
In armed conflict and in daily life, ships have become an integral part of modern commercial and military systems. Fishing boats are used by millions of fishermen throughout the world. Military forces operate vessels for naval warfare and to transport and support forces ashore. Commercial vessels, nearly 35,000 in number, carried 7.4 billion tons of cargo in 2007. As of 2011, there are about 104,304 ships with IMO numbers in the world.
Ships were always a key in history's great explorations and scientific and technological development. Navigators such as Zheng He spread such inventions as the compass and gunpowder. Ships have been used for such purposes as colonization and the slave trade, and have served scientific, cultural, and humanitarian needs. After the 16th century, new crops that had come from and to the Americas via the European seafarers significantly contributed to the world population growth.Ship transport has shaped the world's economy into today's energy-intensive pattern.

Ships Of The Line: Active Duty! A few of years back, for my blog The Drexfiles, I got this wacky idea. We had these great print pages as CG files for the Ships of the Line Calendar. It wouldn't take much to give them a nudge, and set them in motion. So a bunch of us did, and it was a big hit. In celebration of the the Ships Of The Line Book II, I did a bit of archeology, found the original files, and re-output Active Duty at a higher resolution...even added a couple of new ones. I hope you relish it as much as I : ) - Doug

The Great Ships series from the History Channel about the "Ships of the Line." These floating cities were designed to fight single file in a straight line to fire constant broadside canon shots to utterly destroy your opponent. This tactic would prove costly for the British during the American Revolution. Some side information: the term "Square Meal" comes from this type of vessel where shipmates were fed relatively well for the period, and were served one hot meal in the afternoon on a "square" plate. Additionally, the term "Son of a Gun" come from when women on these ships, (yes, there were women) during birth if labor was becoming too difficult and a women was having a hard time pushing, she was placed in between two canons where they were fired simultaneously. Alone at night
In the cold and windy city
When the candle fades away
Another morning
And the sun's shining pretty
You can watch the children play
But there's a hole in the sky
And it cries for you and I
And we can't find the reason for calling
There's a new place to see
Another world for you and me
And one can hear the bell which will be tolling
Tolling
They crossed the line
See the light, it shines
They crossed the line
Heaven or hell, who will decide
What's coming after
The curse of wrath and agony, oh lord
Please help us find our way
We tried to get out
Of the last light of eternity
But we couldn't get away
There's a hole in the sky
And it cries for you and I
But we can't find the reason for dreaming
There's a new place to see
Another world for you and me
