Every offering made to the fire is considered as an offering to the gods. Havan is also called as Homa or Homam. We also know havan as jagya and agnihotra. In the Hindu scriptures, havan puja was performed by brahmins and rishis to incite gods and bring prosperity into the world. They are considered a part of sanskaras. Fire is the central element of the havan and the other elements are offered as the ritual progresses with recital of chanting. Water, earth, wind and soul are placed in the fire to invoke the hidden powers and divinities that are present in every Hindu’s life. Havan’s are done under open sky, inside temples or at home. It often begins with the kindling of fire in square Vat (K). Mango and sandalwood sticks are used that are dipped and dried in ghee. Coconut, saffron, rice grains, camphor and betel are offered into the havan kund along with Frankincensce (Dhoop). It is important to note that only dried coconuts are used as the wet ones may cause damage. Havan basically is done before puja to purify the environment against germs because the ingredients used in the havan helps to do the same. Havan is the purity of soul and the ambience. All the samagri used in the havan are known to drive out inauspicious things and evil forces. The ritual is performed as part of Navagraha puja, Vastu puja (Griha Pravesh), house-warming, baby shower or wedding ceremonies. No Hindu occasion is considered solemnised till you take a holy round of the havan kund reciting the Gayatri mantra and aartis.
