Rann of Kutch (Kutchi language: કચ્છ જો રણ) is a large area of salt marshes located in mostly in Gujarat (primarily the Kutch district), India and the southern tip of Sindh, Pakistan. It is divided into two main parts; Great Rann of Kutch and Little Rann of Kutch.
The Rann of Kutch is located in the Thar Desert bio-geographic area in the Indian state of Gujarat with some parts in Pakistani province of Sindh. It is a seasonally marshy region, the word Rann meaning "salt marsh", alternating with medaks, elevated pieces of land where vegetation grows.
Kutch is the name of the district in Gujarat where this region is situated. The marsh covers a huge area of around 10,000 square miles and is positioned between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River in southern Pakistan. To the northeast corner of the Rann of Kutch lies the Luni River, originating in Rajasthan.
The Rann of Kutch is the only large flooded grasslands zone in the whole Indo-Malayan region. The fact that the area has desert on one side and the sea on the other provides the Rann of Kutch with a variety of ecosystems, including mangroves and desert vegetation. The grassland and deserts of the Rann of Kutch are home to forms of wildlife that have adapted to the often harsh conditions of this vast area. These include endemic and endangered animal and plant species.

I had gone for a solo road trip to the Little Rann of Kutch in search of the Short Eared Owl. This is my second solo road trip. I am still learning the art of movie making, all comments and suggestions are welcome.
Located 100km west of Ahmedabad, the Little Rann of Kutch is a wonder it is own right. Huge expanse of barren land otherwise filled with water in monsoons is a nature lovers paradise. One can see several migratory birds along with local animals like the Wild Ass, fox. Here is a clip of such unique moments from our recent tour of the Little Rann. Safari was organised by Desert Coursers, Zainabad.
In this video you can see the salt workers of the Little Rann of Kutch collecting salt from the salt pans. The salt workers settle down in the desert for 8 months between October to May and their homes adjacent to the salt pans that they work on. Every year there homes are destroyed by the monsoon and they have to rebuild them during their working season. All the workers stay near their salt pans and work in harsh sun to extract salt in the Little Rann of Kutch. "Not many know that salt works begin where civilization ends that salt pans lie in coastal and desert areas under a pitiless scorching sun that some 150 000 salt workers in India and their families (perhaps half a million people in all) live for eight months a year in this harsh environment that's often devoid of basic amenit...
We visited the Little Rann and stayed at www.desertoutpost.in Desert Outpost took us on a safari into the Rann, to see wildlife (birds and wild Ass). A great stay, super company with interesting guests. Highly recommend if you're travelling through Gujarat.
Wild Asses in Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, India, running along the salt pans... Good shots of them loping around, chasing each other energetically, and cantering around the hot plains of the Kutch, in the summer heat of June, 2011. One ass seems to be nipping the derriere (aka ass) of the other ass, as it runs along behind it, even getting kicked in the face by the other ass! Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary also known as the Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Little Rann of Kutch in the Gujarat state of India. Spread over 4950+ square kilometers, it is the largest wildlife sanctuary in India. The wildlife sanctuary was established in 1972 and came under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1973. The sanctuary is one of the last refuges on earth of the endangered wild ass sub-spe...

The Phoenicopterous minor or Lesser Flamingo is a species in the Flamingo family of birds found in the Little Rann of Kutch. Inspite of the fact that numerous species of the flamingo, they are classified as near -- threatened. The reason being that they are declining in population and have very few breeding sites. Human activities are a major reason for the slow but sure disappearance of the flamingoes. This video shows one such breeding site in the Little Rann of Kutch filmed in January 2012. This year, the monsoon was inadequate and the water in this particular breeding site dried up much sooner than anticipated. Due to this, the flamingoes were forced to abandon their nests and fly elsewhere. This footage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wi...

Wel come to Kutch Rann Utsav Festival Kutch literally means something which intermittently becomes wet and dry; a large part of this district is known as Rann of Kutch which is shallow wetland which submerges in water during the rainy season and becomes dry during other seasons. The same word is also used in the languages of Sanskrit origin for a tortoise. The Rann is famous for its marshy salt flats which become snow white after the shallow water dries up each season before the monsoon rains. The district is also famous for ecologically important Banni grasslands with their seasonal marshy wetlands which form the outer belt of the Rann of Kutch. Bhungas are closely linked to the identity of Kutch desert areas. A traditional bhunga house has circular mud walls and a thatched roof. The...

The right folks to ride the desert safari with Many an entrepreneur knows how to set up a great resort or hotel, but few know how to address the needs of their guests. Rann Riders gives you no reason to complain. Owned and managed by the descendants of the former rulers of Dasada, you know it has been set up by someone with taste. Even before I checked into the resort in Dasada village in the Little Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary region in Gujarat, they had me impressed. Asking for directions while driving from Udaipur, they suggested I visit attractions like the Modhera Sun Temple and Patan on the way - it sure saved me a drive back from Dasada later to cover these. You go to the Little Rann to explore the salt desert and sight wildlife - and if you are not in able hands, you could j...

This video is a memoir of our ride to the little runn of kutch on the 12th & 13th of march 2016. If you are a amateur or even a hard core rider then this is a must go for off roading. But please be advised that this is a labyrinth, if you are not aware of the route in the desert, accompanying a local along is strictly recommended. Ride safe pals.
We team up with Uzair Kasbati, a budding wildlife photographer to photograph wild asses in the little Rann of Kutch with the Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG.

DESERT FOX, at LITTLE RANN OF KUTCH , April 2016 DESERT FOX / Fennec Fox(Vulpes zerda).... is a small nocturnal fox ..... Its most distinctive feature is its unusually large ears, which also serve to dissipate heat.... It mainly eats insects, small mammals, and birds. The species is able to live without free water, as its kidneys are adapted to restrict water loss. A fennec's burrowing can cause the formation of dew. They are also known to absorb water through food consumption; but will drink water if available.... Fennec foxes are social animals that mate for life, with each pair or family controlling their own territory.... Sexual maturity is reached at around nine months old. In the wild, mating usually occurs between January and February for litters to be born between March and April....

A story about the salt workers of the Rann of Kutch, working under very difficult conditions in India's salt desert, in Gujarat state. The Little Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh located in the Western Indian State of Gujarat in India. Far from being known around the world, even most people in India are not aware of its existence. There are no roads in the Rann. To travel here, one has to make ones way through its gigantic mud flats. This salt-bearing wilderness spreads over 5,000 sq kms and is also known as 'Survey Number Zero' because no land survey has been conducted here since the end of British rule in India. Just 600 kms from Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, this land is unknown to most. With its unique geography of a vast desolate landscape, it makes for a very distinct forest...
