Srinagar:
S.T.D. -- 0194
Srinagar is located in the picturesque Kashmir valley and one of the most beautiful cities in India in terms of natural splendor. The tourist attractions of Srinagar are mainly related to natural beauty like lakes, gardens, etc. Other than that, there are some shrines that form the tourist attractions of Srinagar.
The city was founded by the King Pravarasena-II over 2,000 years ago, and the city of Srinagar has a long history, dating back at least to the 3rd century BC. The winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir is famous for its canals, houseboats and Mughal gardens. It is that place where it's very easy to spend a few hours simply wandering - particularly along the old city streets near the Jhelum river. The city has long been a center of art and leaning. Srinagar is a unique city because of its lakes - the Dal, Nagin and Anchar. The River Jhelum also flows through a part of the city.

Pakistan may get a loan amounting to $948 million from China, Saudi Fund for Development and Islamic Development Bank (IDB) which would be adequate to meet 58 percent of the total cost of the 969MW Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project. Sources told Business Recorder that Pakistan would receive $448 million from China under Pak-China co-operation in hydel power generation agreement recently signed between the two countries during President Asif Ali Zardari visit.
The other two financiers IDB and Saudi Fund for Development have also committed $300 million and $200 million respectively. Pakistani and IDB officials are expected to hold meetings by end of Feb 2009 to finalise the modalities of the deal. The construction contract of the project has already been awarded to a Chinese company and the work is in progress.
The project cost is Rs 128.4 billion and Pakistan is seeking assistance from different countries to meet the cost of the project, sources added. Sources said the government has also requested Kuwait Fund for Development and Abu Dhabi Fund for Development to provide financing to carry out Neelum-Jhelum Project.
The government recently arranged the visit of representatives of these funds to visit the site of the project. The Water and Power Development Authority chairman also visited the site along with the delegation. The project is located in the vicinity of Muzaffarabad in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It envisages the diversion of water of Neelum River through a tunnel into Jhelum River. The government had also imposed 10 paisa per unit surcharge during last year to be charged to electricity consumers to generate financing for the project. The project would be completed with Chinese assistance in eight years and officials described it as another symbol of Pak-China friendship.
The representatives of Funds were informed that Pakistan was currently facing power shortfall and the Neelum Jhelum Project would help meet the shortfall. The Pakistani authorities said that a power project would greatly help the government to meet its energy requirements, badly needed for economic development of the country.
The construction of Neelum-Jhelum Project would enable Pakistan to get water usage rights and any further delay in construction of the said project would allow India to use water for power generation under the Indus Water Treaty brokered between the two countries by the World Bank

Just past Dina you will drive over a railway overpass, stay to the right of the road and take the first U-turn to drive back towards Dina. After about 100 meters to your left you will find a signpost, which indicates the way towards the road leading to Rohtas Fort which is 8 km away, past the small village of Muftian. Technically only one country can build it and use the water NEW DELHI: Amid indications that India and Pakistan are on the verge of resolving some long-standing territorial disputes, differences over utilisation of the waters of the Kishanganga (Neelum in Pakistan) is casting a new shadow over relationship. Both sides want to build a hydro-electric project over the river as well as use the water for irrigation. But the problem is that only one country can build a technically feasible power project as well as use the waters for irrigation. New twist In the latest twist to the issue, Pakistan High Commissioner Shahid Malik has threatened to take the dispute to a third party for arbitration following several rounds of fruitless talks between experts of both countries. In response, India has accelerated works on the project because it fears that if the project is not completed earlier than the downstream Neelum-Jhelum project in Pakistan, it may permanently lose its rights to utilise this site. Besides, there are very few other sites on the western rivers for utilising India's share under the Indus Waters Treaty. Apprehensive that Pakistan could plead before a court of arbitration to get the Kishanganga project stopped, India took the unusual step of completing the digging work on a diversion tunnel even before the project could be awarded to a company. And now with none of the companies participating in the tender prepared to pick up the contract on the amount indicated by the government, New Delhi is prepared to extend several concessions, including a huge loan of more than Rs.2,000 crores at a minimal interest of one per cent which will be applicable after the project is functional. India's eagerness to start work on a commercially unviable project stems from the Foreign Office's understanding that if Pakistan achieves significant progress on the three times larger Neelum-Jhelum project and the contracts of the Indian project are not even awarded, India's position on the project will be weakened. In case Pakistan takes the dispute before a third party and the project remains a non-starter, India could even lose the case. In compliance India firmly believes that the Kishanganga project is in compliance with the Indus Waters Treaty and rejects Pakistan's claims for using its waters for irrigation and hydro-electric use as not credible and non-existent, respectively. On the basis of departmentally executed civil works and excavation of the diversion tunnel, it claims that while work on the project is ongoing, Pakistan has only completed feasibility studies on the Chinese-funded Neelum-Jhelum hydel project. The project envisages construction of a 100-foot dam and diverting the water into an underground powerhouse near Bandipur. Preliminary construction work is being done while the digging of the diversion tunnel has been completed. The project was to be completed in 2014 but the bids saw contenders quoting much higher than the anticipated cost. Pakistan has already sought a World Bank nominated expert to adjudicate on the Baglihar hydro-electric project in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. While India rejected Pakistan's request to stop construction, Islamabad rejected New Delhi's plea for time to consider its technical objections. Pakistan's objections to the Kishanganga project are also on the same lines.

A bus carrying 50 people of a marriage party fell into an overflowing stream in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir today.
Reports as of now say at least six people have survived the accident; many passengers are reported missing.
A message posted on Twitter by Home Minister Rajnath Singh's office said National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been dispatched to the site to help with search and rescue operation.
Most rivers in the state are flowing above danger mark due to incessant rains. A flood alert has been declared across the state.
