Salil Chowdhury was an Indian music composer, who mainly composed for Bengali, Hindi, and Malayalam films. He was also a poet and a playwright. He is affectionately called Salilda by his admirers.His musical ability was widely recognized and acknowledged in the Indian film industry. He was an accomplished arranger and was proficient in several musical instruments, including flute, the piano, and the esraj. He was also widely acclaimed and admired for his inspirational and original poetry.

This album “Tribute To Salil Chowdhury” is a compilation of modern Bengali songs by the legendary Composer music director and lyricist Salil Chowdhury. This album has songs sung by eminent singers from the Hindi and Bengali film industry like Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Antara Chowdhury and Asha Bhonsle.
Salil Chowdhury was undoubtedly one of the most experimental and improvisation-based composer of his era. Salil Chowdhury himself was a great musician and a multi instrumentalist, he could play the flute, piano and even esraj (an Indian string instrument). Salil Chowdhury was keen on western melodies from his childhood. At a very early age Salil Chowdhury joined the IPTA (Indian peoples Theater association), which was the cultural wing of the communist party of India. At this phase a lot of memorable compositions were scored by Salil Chowdhury which later on became huge hits and many famous artists sung them.
Salil Chowdhury's debut as a music director in Bengali films happened in the year 1949 with the film “Poriborton”. But with his Hindi film debut Salil Chowdhury's career took a sky jump. This was Bimal Roy's “Do Bigha Zamin” which released in 1953. Salil Chowdhury wrote the story for the film and composed music for it too. This film got the first best film award at filmfare awards and also won prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. Salil Chowdhury after this was associated with a number of hit films and songs.
This particular album “Tribute To Salil Chowdhury” is a collection of modern Bengali songs written and composed by Salil Chowdhury himself. Some of the legendary voices of Indian film industry had sung some of them. Lata Mangeshkar for example sang the song “Aaj Noi Gun Gun” which became a smash hit instantly. Another hit song in this compilation is “O Amar Sajani Go” which is a duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Salil Chowdhury's daughter Antara Chowdhury also sang a lot of her father's compositions and one such hit is compiled here which is “O Mago Ma“. This compilation also has a song sung by Asha Bhonsle that is “ O Ghumer Moyna”. This one is powerhouse of hits that is classic and timeless.

Salilda's entry into Malayalam Films started with the film 'Chemmeen' directed by Ramu Kariat. Based on the touching novel of the same name by the renowned Malayalee writer Thakazhy Shivshankar Pillai, Chemmeen became a landmark in Malayalam Cinema. It also received the Presidents Gold Medal in 1965. The wonderful songs of Chemmeen along with the composer Salil Chowdhury became widely known in Kerala. Salil formed a formidable team with the Malyalee lyricist Vayalar Rama Varma and the poet O.N.V Kurup and composed music for over 25 films. I think for Salil admirers it is mandatory to listen to these songs. I know that it's quite difficult to find records of all these films, but I uploding all the song collection for you, Enjoy.

Salil Chowdhury (19 November 1923 -- 5 September 1995) was an Indian music composer, who mainly composed for Bengali, Hindi and Malayalam films. He was also a poet and a playwright. He is affectionately called Salilda by his admirers.
His musical ability was widely recognized and acknowledged in the Indian film industry.
He graduated from Bangabasi College, affiliated to the University of Calcutta in Kolkata, and during this period his political ideas were formulated along with a considerable maturity in his musical ideas.
In 1944, a young Salil came to Calcutta for his graduate studies. He joined the IPTA(Indian Peoples Theater Association) the cultural wing of the Communist Party of India. He started writing songs and setting tunes for them. The IPTA theatrical outfit travelled through the villages and the cities bringing these songs to the common man. Songs like Bicharpati, Runner and Abak prithibi became extremely popular with the general population at the time.
Songs like Gaayer bodhu, which he composed at the age of 20, brought about a new wave of Bengali music. Almost every notable singer at the time from West Bengal had sung at least one of his songs. A few examples are Debabrata Biswas, Hemanta Mukherjee, Shyamal Mitra,Sandhya Mukherjee, Manabendra Mukherjee, Subir Sen and Pratima Banerjee.
Salil da's debut in the Hindi Film Industry came in 1953 as the Music Director for Do Bigha Zamin (based on Tagore's poem/narrative by the same name, but the story was different, story was written by Salil Chowdhury himself ) Directed by Bimal Roy It also took his career to new heights when it became the first film to win the Filmfare Best Movie Award and won the international Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
After about 20 years in Bengali and Hindi films, Salil da entered Malayalam films in 1964 with Chemmeen.[2]
He went on to compose for over 75 Hindi films, over 40 Bengali films, around 26 Malayalam films, and several Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Oriya and Assamese films.

Salil Chowdhury (Bengali: সলিল চৌধুরী, Hindi: सलिल चौधरी, Malayalam: സലില് ചൗധരി) was an Indian music composer, who mainly composed for Bengali, Hindi, and Malayalam films. He was also a poet and a playwright. He is affectionately called Salilda by his admirers.
His musical genius was widely recognized and acknowledged in the Indian film industry. He was an accomplished arranger and was proficient in several musical instruments, including flute, the piano, and the esraj. He was also widely acclaimed and admired for his inspirational and original poetry.
Salil's childhood was spent in the tea gardens of Assam. From an early age he listened to the Western Classical collection of his father. His father was reputed to stage plays with coolies and other low-paid workers of the tea-gardens. He graduated from Bangabasi College, an affiliate of the University of Calcutta in Kolkata and it was during this period of time that his political ideas were formulated quickly along with a considerable maturity in his musical ideas. He was a man with excellent talent.

This album “Tribute To Salil Chowdhury” is a compilation of modern Bengali songs by the legendary Composer music director and lyricist Salil Chowdhury. This album has songs sung by eminent singers from the Hindi and Bengali film industry like Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Antara Chowdhury and Asha Bhonsle. Salil Chowdhury was undoubtedly one of the most experimental and improvisation-based composer of his era. Salil Chowdhury himself was a great musician and a multi instrumentalist, he could play the flute, piano and even esraj (an Indian string instrument). Salil Chowdhury was keen on western melodies from his childhood. At a very early age Salil Chowdhury joined the IPTA (Indian peoples Theater association), which was the cultural wing of the communist party of India. At this phase a lot of memorable compositions were scored by Salil Chowdhury which later on became huge hits and many famous artists sung them. Salil Chowdhury's debut as a music director in Bengali films happened in the year 1949 with the film “Poriborton”. But with his Hindi film debut Salil Chowdhury's career took a sky jump. This was Bimal Roy's “Do Bigha Zamin” which released in 1953. Salil Chowdhury wrote the story for the film and composed music for it too. This film got the first best film award at filmfare awards and also won prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. Salil Chowdhury after this was associated with a number of hit films and songs. This particular album “Tribute To Salil Chowdhury” is a collection of modern Bengali songs written and composed by Salil Chowdhury himself. Some of the legendary voices of Indian film industry had sung some of them. Lata Mangeshkar for example sang the song “Aaj Noi Gun Gun” which became a smash hit instantly. Another hit song in this compilation is “O Amar Sajani Go” which is a duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Salil Chowdhury's daughter Antara Chowdhury also sang a lot of her father's compositions and one such hit is compiled here which is “O Mago Ma“. This compilation also has a song sung by Asha Bhonsle that is “ O Ghumer Moyna”. Salilda's entry into Malayalam Films started with the film 'Chemmeen' directed by Ramu Kariat. Based on the touching novel of the same name by the renowned Malayalee writer Thakazhy Shivshankar Pillai, Chemmeen became a landmark in Malayalam Cinema. It also received the Presidents Gold Medal in 1965. The wonderful songs of Chemmeen along with the composer Salil Chowdhury became widely known in Kerala. He was also a poet and a playwright. He is affectionately called Salilda by his admirers. His musical ability was widely recognized and acknowledged in the Indian film industry. He graduated from Bangabasi College, affiliated to the University of Calcutta in Kolkata, and during this period his political ideas were formulated along with a considerable maturity in his musical ideas. In 1944, a young Salil came to Calcutta for his graduate studies. He joined the IPTA(Indian Peoples Theater Association) the cultural wing of the Communist Party of India. He started writing songs and setting tunes for them. The IPTA theatrical outfit travelled through the villages and the cities bringing these songs to the common man. Songs like Bicharpati, Runner and Abak prithibi became extremely popular with the general population at the time. Songs like Gaayer bodhu, which he composed at the age of 20, brought about a new wave of Bengali music. Almost every notable singer at the time from West Bengal had sung at least one of his songs. A few examples are Debabrata Biswas, Hemanta Mukherjee, Shyamal Mitra,Sandhya Mukherjee, Manabendra Mukherjee, Subir Sen and Pratima Banerjee. Salil da's debut in the Hindi Film Industry came in 1953 as the Music Director for Do Bigha Zamin (based on Tagore's poem/narrative by the same name, but the story was different, story was written by Salil Chowdhury himself ) Directed by Bimal Roy It also took his career to new heights when it became the first film to win the Filmfare Best Movie Award and won the international Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. After about 20 years in Bengali and Hindi films, Salil da entered Malayalam films in 1964 with Chemmeen.[2] He went on to compose for over 75 Hindi films, over 40 Bengali films, around 26 Malayalam films, and several Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Oriya and Assamese films. Salilda's entry into Malayalam Films started with the film 'Chemmeen' directed by Ramu Kariat. Based on the touching novel of the same name by the renowned Malayalee writer Thakazhy Shivshankar Pillai, Chemmeen became a landmark in Malayalam Cinema. It also received the Presidents Gold Medal in 1965. The wonderful songs of Chemmeen along with the composer Salil Chowdhury became widely known in Kerala. This album “Tribute To Salil Chowdhury” is a compilation of modern Bengali songs by the legendary Composer music director and lyricist Salil Chowdhury. This album has songs sung by eminent singers from the Hindi and Bengali film industry like Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Antara Chowdhury and Asha Bhonsle.
Salil Chowdhury was undoubtedly one of the most experimental and improvisation-based composer of his era. Salil Chowdhury himself was a great musician and a multi instrumentalist, he could play the flute, piano and even esraj (an Indian string instrument). Salil Chowdhury was keen on western melodies from his childhood. At a very early age Salil Chowdhury joined the IPTA (Indian peoples Theater association), which was the cultural wing of the communist party of India. At this phase a lot of memorable compositions were scored by Salil Chowdhury which later on became huge hits and many famous artists sung them.
Salil Chowdhury's debut as a music director in Bengali films happened in the year 1949 with the film “Poriborton”. But with his Hindi film debut Salil Chowdhury's career took a sky jump. This was Bimal Roy's “Do Bigha Zamin” which released in 1953. Salil Chowdhury wrote the story for the film and composed music for it too. This film got the first best film award at filmfare awards and also won prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. Salil Chowdhury after this was associated with a number of hit films and songs.
This particular album “Tribute To Salil Chowdhury” is a collection of modern Bengali songs written and composed by Salil Chowdhury himself. Some of the legendary voices of Indian film industry had sung some of them. Lata Mangeshkar for example sang the song “Aaj Noi Gun Gun” which became a smash hit instantly. Another hit song in this compilation is “O Amar Sajani Go” which is a duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Salil Chowdhury's daughter Antara Chowdhury also sang a lot of her father's compositions and one such hit is compiled here which is “O Mago Ma“. This compilation also has a song sung by Asha Bhonsle that is “ O Ghumer Moyna”. This one is powerhouse of hits that is classic and timeless.

Salilda's entry into Malayalam Films started with the film 'Chemmeen' directed by Ramu Kariat. Based on the touching novel of the same name by the renowned Malayalee writer Thakazhy Shivshankar Pillai, Chemmeen became a landmark in Malayalam Cinema. It also received the Presidents Gold Medal in 1965. The wonderful songs of Chemmeen along with the composer Salil Chowdhury became widely known in Kerala. Salil formed a formidable team with the Malyalee lyricist Vayalar Rama Varma and the poet O.N.V Kurup and composed music for over 25 films. I think for Salil admirers it is mandatory to listen to these songs. I know that it's quite difficult to find records of all these films, but I uploding all the song collection for you, Enjoy.

Salil Chowdhury (19 November 1923 -- 5 September 1995) was an Indian music composer, who mainly composed for Bengali, Hindi and Malayalam films. He was also a poet and a playwright. He is affectionately called Salilda by his admirers.
His musical ability was widely recognized and acknowledged in the Indian film industry.
He graduated from Bangabasi College, affiliated to the University of Calcutta in Kolkata, and during this period his political ideas were formulated along with a considerable maturity in his musical ideas.
In 1944, a young Salil came to Calcutta for his graduate studies. He joined the IPTA(Indian Peoples Theater Association) the cultural wing of the Communist Party of India. He started writing songs and setting tunes for them. The IPTA theatrical outfit travelled through the villages and the cities bringing these songs to the common man. Songs like Bicharpati, Runner and Abak prithibi became extremely popular with the general population at the time.
Songs like Gaayer bodhu, which he composed at the age of 20, brought about a new wave of Bengali music. Almost every notable singer at the time from West Bengal had sung at least one of his songs. A few examples are Debabrata Biswas, Hemanta Mukherjee, Shyamal Mitra,Sandhya Mukherjee, Manabendra Mukherjee, Subir Sen and Pratima Banerjee.
Salil da's debut in the Hindi Film Industry came in 1953 as the Music Director for Do Bigha Zamin (based on Tagore's poem/narrative by the same name, but the story was different, story was written by Salil Chowdhury himself ) Directed by Bimal Roy It also took his career to new heights when it became the first film to win the Filmfare Best Movie Award and won the international Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
After about 20 years in Bengali and Hindi films, Salil da entered Malayalam films in 1964 with Chemmeen.[2]
He went on to compose for over 75 Hindi films, over 40 Bengali films, around 26 Malayalam films, and several Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Oriya and Assamese films.
