What he says about consciousness as a biological phenomenon will challenge you! Cogitation, Consciousness & The Brain. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
John Searle is the Slusser Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. His Talk at Google is focused on the philosophy of mind and the potential for consciousness in artificial intelligence. This Talk was hosted for Google's Singularity Network. John is widely noted for his contributions to the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and social philosophy. Searle has received the Jean Nicod Prize, the National Humanities Medal, and the Mind & Brain Prize for his work. Among his notable concepts is the "Chinese room" argument against "strong" artificial intelligence.
Searle's talk at the Evolution and Function of Consciousness Summer School ("Turing Consciousness 2012") held at the University of Montreal as part of Alan Turing Year. All videos can be found here: http://users.ecs.soton.ac.uk/harnad/TuringEvolutionConsciousness.htm
It's with great sadness that we've received the news of Tom's passing. Tom and Architects have always had a special place in our hearts. They have been a part of the PitCam family since we first started out interviewing bands in crammed spaces, using nowhere near the quality equipment that we have today. Tom was the kind of person that you just wanted to be around. He was funny, way too smart for his own good and oh so sarcastic. But more importantly, he cared about the world and everyone in it. His strong opinions on politics, social issues and animal rights made him a truly fascinating and interesting guy to talk to, and knowing that someone like that has been robbed of his life breaks our hearts. Our thoughts go out to Tom's brothers in Architects , especially to Dan, who has lost hi...

Philosopher John Searle lays out the case for studying human consciousness -- and systematically shoots down some of the common objections to taking it seriously. As we learn more about the brain processes that cause awareness, accepting that consciousness is a biological phenomenon is an important first step. And no, he says, consciousness is not a massive computer simulation. (Filmed at TEDxCERN.) John Searle, Ph.D., is a professor of philosophy and cognitive science at U.C. Berkeley and author of Intentionality and Minds, Brains and Science. He challenges the notion that the human mind operates like a computer, pointing out that intentionality and other human faculties are not achievable through artificial intelligence.
Down on my knees, I cannot see, the pain so hollow
by the time, why break my life, we are not the ones to
follow
Searches myself from the dark side
I won't bleed for no-one else, today
do you feel the same way, as yesterday?
when you suffered coldness and had loneliness O.D
We in the middle, of the riddle, it's time to make a
choice
by the time, why break my life, we are not the ones to
follow
We down
to the hate of love
turn, we're all alone
