Mardin
Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. The capital of Mardin Province, it is known for the Artuqid (Artıklı or Artuklu in Turkish) architecture of its old city, and for its strategic location on a rocky hill near the Tigris River that rises steeply over the flat plains.
Mardin is one of the oldest settled areas in upper Mesopotamia. Excavations done in the 1920s discovered remains in the area that dated to 4000 BCE. The first known civilization were the Subarians who were then succeeded in 3000BCE by the Hurrians. The Elamites gained control around 2230 BCE. and were followed by the Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Romans and Byzantines.
In 692, the Muslim Ummayads arrived and introduced Islam. The Abbasid Caliphate based in Baghdad replaced them in 824. Factions of the Seljuk Turks fought each other over Mardin as it changed hands many times before it was finally taken by Nahm ad-din Ilghazi, the bey of the Artukids, a Turkish dynasty founded by the Seljuk Emir Artuk. During the Artukid period, many of Mardin's historic buildings were constructed, including several Mosques, Palaces, Madrassas and Hans.
The lands of the Artukid dynasty fell to the Mongols sometime between 1235 and 1243, but the Mongols never directly governed the area. The Artukid family ruling Mardin became vassal state of the Mongol Empire. During the battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, the Artuqid (Artık) ruler revolted against the Mongol rule. Hulegu's general and Chupan's ancestor, Koke-Ilge of the Jalayir, stormed the city and Hulegu appointed the rebel's son, al-Nasir, governor of Mardin. Although, Hulegu suspected the latter's loyalty for a while, thereafter the Artukids remained loyal unlike nomadic Bedoun and Kurd tribes in the south western frontier. The Mongol Ilkhanids considered them important allies. For this loyalty they shown, Artukids were given more lands in 1298 and 1304. Mardin later passed to the Akkoyunlu, a federation of Turkic tribes that controlled territory all the way to the Caspian Sea. In 1517, Mardin was annexed by the Ottomans under Selim the Grim. During this time, Mardin was administered by a governor directly appointed under the Ottoman Sultan's authority. In 1923, with the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Mardin was made the administrative capital of a province named after it.Mardin has often been considered an open air museum due to its historical architecture. Most buildings use the beige colored limestone rock which has been mined for centuries in quarries around the area.

Sitti Radviyye Medrese (Hatuniye Medrese) - built in the 12th century in the honor of Sitti Radviyye, the wife of Najm ad-din Alpi. There is a footprint that is claimed to be that to be that of the Prophet Muhammad.
Kasımiye Medrese - construction started by the Artukids and completed by the Akkoyunlu under Sultan Kasım. It has an adjoining Mosque and a Dervish lodge.

Deyrü'z-Zafaran Monastery - The Syriac Orthodox Saffron Monastery was founded in 439 AD and is one of the oldest monasteries in the world and the only one that is still functioning in southern Turkey. From 1160 until 1932, it was the seat of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch, until the Patriarchate relocated to the Syrian capital Damascus. The site of the monastery itself is said to have been used as a temple by sun worshipers as long ago as 2000 BC.

Midyat
Midyat is an originally Assyrian/Syriac town in Mardin Province of Turkey. The ancient city is the center of a centuries-old Assyrian/Syriac enclave in Southeast-Turkey, widely familiar under its Syriac name Tur Abdin. A cognate of the name Midyat is first encountered in an inscription of the Neo-Assyrian king Ashur-nasir-pal II (883-859 B.C.).[citation needed] This royal text depicts how Assyrian forces conquered the city and its surrounding villages. The Assyrian Genocide of World War I wiped out large numbers of ethnic Syriac Christians in Turkey.
After the so-called Gastarbeiter ('guest worker') era, though, commencing in the early 1960s, the city was soon to be nearly completely emptied from its native inhabitants who choose to leave for a better life offered in Western Countries. Soon other local Mhallami and Kurdish inhabitants start building houses in the surrounding areas. The houses and churches belonging to Christians have been preserved although many of them are empty.
The Midyat economy similar to that of any small southeastern village in turkey consisting of carpets, towels and other cloth goods. More specific to the city is its silver crafts called telkari which are handcrafted silver ornaments which are made up of very fine strands of silver laid on top of one another. another staple in the Midyat market is its bulgur rice which is a very fine brown rice.

Saint Hananyo renovated the monastery 793. Founded in 493 AD, the monastery was formerly the seat of the patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church from 1160 until 1932 where it relocated to Damascus.

Mardin Province (Kurdish: Parêzgeha Mêrdînê, Turkish: Mardin ili ) is a province of Turkey with a population of 744,606. The population was 835,173 in 2000. The capital of the Mardin Province is Mardin (Kurdish: Mêrdîn, Classical Syriac: ܡܶܪܕܺܝܢ "Mardin" in related Semitic language Arabic: ماردين, Mardīn). Located near the traditional boundary of Anatolia and Mesopotamia, it has a diverse population, composed by Kurdish, Turkish, Arab and Syriac people.
The local Syriacs, while very reduced due to the results of the 1915 massacres, hold on to two of the oldest monasteries in the world, Dayro d-Mor Hananyo (Turkish Deyrülzafaran, English Saffron Monastery) and Deyrulumur Monastery. The Christian community is concentrated on the Tur Abdin plateau and in the town of Midyat, with a smaller community (approximately 100) in the provincial capital.
Politically, the area in the early 2000s has witnessed competition between the governing Justice and Development Party and the mainly Kurdish-based Democratic People's Party, later revamped as Peace and Democracy Party.

Mardin Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. During the Artukid period, many of Mardin's historic buildings were constructed, including several Mosques, Palaces, Madrassas and Hans. The lands of the Artukid dynasty fell to the Mongols sometime between 1235 and 1243, but the Mongols never directly governed the area. The Artukid family ruling Mardin became vassal state of the Mongol Empire. During the battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, the Artuqid (Artık) ruler revolted against the Mongol rule. Hulegu's general and Chupan's ancestor, Koke-Ilge of the Jalayir, stormed the city and Hulegu appointed the rebel's son, al-Nasir, governor of Mardin. Although, Hulegu suspected the latter's loyalty for a while, thereafter the Artukids remained loyal unlike nomadic Bedoun and Kurd tribes in the south western frontier. The Mongol Ilkhanids considered them important allies. For this loyalty they shown, Artukids were given more lands in 1298 and 1304. Mardin later passed to the Akkoyunlu, a federation of Turkic tribes that controlled territory all the way to the Caspian Sea. In 1517, Mardin was annexed by the Ottomans under Selim the Grim. During this time, Mardin was administered by a governor directly appointed under the Ottoman Sultan's authority. In 1923, with the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Mardin was made the administrative capital of a province named after it.Mardin has often been considered an open air museum due to its historical architecture. Most buildings use the beige colored limestone rock which has been mined for centuries in quarries around the area. Madrassas Zinciriye Medrese Zinciriye Medrese (Sultan Isa Medrese) - Constructed in 1385 by Najm ad-din Isa. The madrasa is part of a complez that includes a Mosque and the tomb of Najm ad-din Isa. Sitti Radviyye Medrese (Hatuniye Medrese) - built in the 12th century in the honor of Sitti Radviyye, the wife of Najm ad-din Alpi. There is a footprint that is claimed to be that to be that of the Prophet Muhammad. Kasımiye Medrese - construction started by the Artukids and completed by the Akkoyunlu under Sultan Kasım. It has an adjoining Mosque and a Dervish lodge. Mor Hananyo Monastery is an important Syriac Orthodox monastery near the city of Mardin, which is better known by its nickname, the 'Saffron Monastery'. This name is derived from the warm colour of its stone. The monastery acquired its present, official name from Saint Hananyo (the Syriac equivalent of Ananias, which is its Greek form), who was Metropolitan of Kfartuta from 793 to 800. Saint Hananyo renovated the monastery 793. Founded in 493 AD, the monastery was formerly the seat of the patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church from 1160 until 1932 where it relocated to Damascus. -

Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. The capital of Mardin Province, it is known for the Artuqid (Artıklı or Artuklu in Turkish) architecture of its old city, and for its strategic location on a rocky hill near the Tigris River that rises steeply over the flat plains.
Mardin is one of the oldest settled areas in upper Mesopotamia. Excavations done in the 1920s discovered remains in the area that dated to 4000 BCE. The first known civilization were the Subarians who were then succeeded in 3000BCE by the Hurrians. The Elamites gained control around 2230 BCE. and were followed by the Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Romans and Byzantines.
In 692, the Muslim Ummayads arrived and introduced Islam. The Abbasid Caliphate based in Baghdad replaced them in 824. Factions of the Seljuk Turks fought each other over Mardin as it changed hands many times before it was finally taken by Nahm ad-din Ilghazi, the bey of the Artukids, a Turkish dynasty founded by the Seljuk Emir Artuk. During the Artukid period, many of Mardin's historic buildings were constructed, including several Mosques, Palaces, Madrassas and Hans.
The lands of the Artukid dynasty fell to the Mongols sometime between 1235 and 1243, but the Mongols never directly governed the area. The Artukid family ruling Mardin became vassal state of the Mongol Empire. During the battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, the Artuqid (Artık) ruler revolted against the Mongol rule. Hulegu's general and Chupan's ancestor, Koke-Ilge of the Jalayir, stormed the city and Hulegu appointed the rebel's son, al-Nasir, governor of Mardin. Although, Hulegu suspected the latter's loyalty for a while, thereafter the Artukids remained loyal unlike nomadic Bedoun and Kurd tribes in the south western frontier. The Mongol Ilkhanids considered them important allies. For this loyalty they shown, Artukids were given more lands in 1298 and 1304. Mardin later passed to the Akkoyunlu, a federation of Turkic tribes that controlled territory all the way to the Caspian Sea. In 1517, Mardin was annexed by the Ottomans under Selim the Grim. During this time, Mardin was administered by a governor directly appointed under the Ottoman Sultan's authority. In 1923, with the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Mardin was made the administrative capital of a province named after it.Mardin has often been considered an open air museum due to its historical architecture. Most buildings use the beige colored limestone rock which has been mined for centuries in quarries around the area.

Sitti Radviyye Medrese (Hatuniye Medrese) - built in the 12th century in the honor of Sitti Radviyye, the wife of Najm ad-din Alpi. There is a footprint that is claimed to be that to be that of the Prophet Muhammad.
Kasımiye Medrese - construction started by the Artukids and completed by the Akkoyunlu under Sultan Kasım. It has an adjoining Mosque and a Dervish lodge.

The site of the monastery itself is said to have been used as a temple by sun worshipers as long ago as 2000 BC.

The Assyrian Genocide of World War I wiped out large numbers of ethnic Syriac Christians in Turkey.
After the so-called Gastarbeiter ('guest worker') era, though, commencing in the early 1960s, the city was soon to be nearly completely emptied from its native inhabitants who choose to leave for a better life offered in Western Countries. Soon other local Mhallami and Kurdish inhabitants start building houses in the surrounding areas. The houses and churches belonging to Christians have been preserved although many of them are empty.
The Midyat economy similar to that of any small southeastern village in turkey consisting of carpets, towels and other cloth goods. More specific to the city is its silver crafts called telkari which are handcrafted silver ornaments which are made up of very fine strands of silver laid on top of one another. another staple in the Midyat market is its bulgur rice which is a very fine brown rice.

Ninth century BC. Assyrian tablets refer to Midyat as Matiate, or city of caves due to the caves at eleth 3 km away from the city where the earliest inhabitants lived. Many different empires had ruled over Midyat including the Mitannians, Assyrians, Uratians, Medes, Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, Abbasids, Seljuks and Ottomans.Due to repeated marauding from invading Mongol and Turkish tribes into Tur Abdin culminating in the end of the 14th, 19th and beginning of the 20th century - the Assyrian/Syriac population of Tur-'Abdin was severely decimated. The Assyrian Genocide of World War I wiped out large numbers of ethnic Syriac Christians in Turkey.
After the so-called Gastarbeiter ('guest worker') era, though, commencing in the early 1960s, the city was soon to be nearly completely emptied from its native inhabitants who choose to leave for a better life offered in Western Countries. Soon other local Mhallami and Kurdish inhabitants start building houses in the surrounding areas. The houses and churches belonging to Christians have been preserved although many of them are empty.
The Midyat economy similar to that of any small southeastern village in turkey consisting of carpets, towels and other cloth goods. More specific to the city is its silver crafts called telkari which are handcrafted silver ornaments which are made up of very fine strands of silver laid on top of one another. another staple in the Midyat market is its bulgur rice which is a very fine brown rice.

Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. The capital of Mardin Province, it is known for the Artuqid (Artıklı or Artuklu in Turkish) architecture of its old city, and for its strategic location on a rocky hill near the Tigris River that rises steeply over the flat plains.
Mardin is one of the oldest settled areas in upper Mesopotamia. Excavations done in the 1920s discovered remains in the area that dated to 4000 BCE. The first known civilization were the Subarians who were then succeeded in 3000BCE by the Hurrians. The Elamites gained control around 2230 BCE. and were followed by the Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Romans and Byzantines.
In 692, the Muslim Ummayads arrived and introduced Islam. The Abbasid Caliphate based in Baghdad replaced them in 824. Factions of the Seljuk Turks fought each other over Mardin as it changed hands many times before it was finally taken by Nahm ad-din Ilghazi, the bey of the Artukids, a Turkish dynasty founded by the Seljuk Emir Artuk. During the Artukid period, many of Mardin's historic buildings were constructed, including several Mosques, Palaces, Madrassas and Hans.
The lands of the Artukid dynasty fell to the Mongols sometime between 1235 and 1243, but the Mongols never directly governed the area. The Artukid family ruling Mardin became vassal state of the Mongol Empire. During the battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, the Artuqid (Artık) ruler revolted against the Mongol rule. Hulegu's general and Chupan's ancestor, Koke-Ilge of the Jalayir, stormed the city and Hulegu appointed the rebel's son, al-Nasir, governor of Mardin. Although, Hulegu suspected the latter's loyalty for a while, thereafter the Artukids remained loyal unlike nomadic Bedoun and Kurd tribes in the south western frontier. The Mongol Ilkhanids considered them important allies. For this loyalty they shown, Artukids were given more lands in 1298 and 1304. Mardin later passed to the Akkoyunlu, a federation of Turkic tribes that controlled territory all the way to the Caspian Sea. In 1517, Mardin was annexed by the Ottomans under Selim the Grim. During this time, Mardin was administered by a governor directly appointed under the Ottoman Sultan's authority. In 1923, with the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Mardin was made the administrative capital of a province named after it.Mardin has often been considered an open air museum due to its historical architecture. Most buildings use the beige colored limestone rock which has been mined for centuries in quarries around the area.

Mor Hananyo Monastery is an important Syriac Orthodox monastery near the city of Mardin, which is better known by its nickname, the 'Saffron Monastery'. This name is derived from the warm colour of its stone. The monastery acquired its present, official name from Saint Hananyo (the Syriac equivalent of Ananias, which is its Greek form), who was Metropolitan of Kfartuta from 793 to 800. Saint Hananyo renovated the monastery 793. Founded in 493 AD, the monastery was formerly the seat of the patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church from 1160 until 1932 where it relocated to Damascus.

This poetic province of southeast Turkey in the Mesopotamian plains witnessed competition between the governing Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and a party rooted in the Kurdish political movement -- which will enter the June 7 parliamentary election as the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) -- in the early 2000s, but the HDP seems to have the strongest support among locals this time around.
“In order to be able to go to Kızıltepe [a town in Mardin province] and run an election campaign, I have to have 50 armed men around me,” said Orhan Miroğlu, a Kurdish intellectual who has become the AK Party's strongest candidate from Mardin.
Speaking to a group of İstanbul-based journalists who visited his office in the town of Midyat with P24 -- also known as the Platform for Independent Journalism -- to observe the regional candidates' election campaigns, Miroğlu said the HDP is disturbing the AK Party's election campaign.
“In my town, the HDP election campaign workers act freely and I like it very much,” he said. “That's how it needs to be.”
Asked by the journalists why the government is not taking enough precautions to prevent violent attacks against the HDP, he said: “I condemn violent attacks against the HDP. … If the government is not conducting an effective investigation, that is wrong; it needs to be done.”
Asked who is likely to be responsible for the attacks on the HDP's offices, Miroğlu said “deep forces.”
HDP officials have reported more than 60 attacks on the party's election offices across Turkey. The latest one occurred on Monday as simultaneous bomb blasts hit two of the HDP's offices, wounding six people in the two southern cities of Adana and Mersin. The latter city was where HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş was due to hold a public rally on the same day.
Thousands of HDP supporters held a demonstration on Tuesday in mainly Kurdish Diyarbakır to protest the explosions, gathering in front of the HDP's Diyarbakır branch office. A large-scale demonstration in Adana also protested the explosions on Tuesday.
Demirtaş said President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, formerly the prime minister and leader of the AK Party, has still not condemned the bomb blasts.
AK Party candidate Miroğlu's words about the violence in the election campaign have contrasted with those of HDP candidate Mithat Sancar, an academic who was born in Mardin.
“Mardin is the most peaceful electoral region. The biggest political party flag flown in the town center in Midyat belongs to the MHP [Nationalist Movement Party]. Not even one act of harassment will occur here regarding other parties' campaigns,” he said.
Responding to further questions from P24 journalists, he said: “If the HDP responds to the attacks, we would have returned to the old days full of violence, and that's what the government wants. If there is a bomb placed somewhere, and the PKK [the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, whose leader, Abdullah Öcalan, has been engaged in peace talks with the government to end the decades-old conflict over the Kurdish issue] accepts responsibility, the most profitable party of the election would have been the AKP [AK Party]. Indeed, the AKP openly points to the HDP as the target to be attacked.”
Candidates are competing for six parliamentary seats in Mardin, which has a population of around 750,000 and about 440,000 registered voters.
Deputies from the AK Party and independents supported by the pro-Kurdish HDP currently share those six parliamentary seats. Mardin Mayor Ahmet Türk is a well-known senior Kurdish nationalist politician who was elected on March 30, 2014.
Sancar said the HDP could guarantee four seats in Parliament this time “even if they sit back at home” but they are aiming to reach at least five seats.

It helped that our trip into the Mardin Bazaar began with the sight of a blacksmith shoeing a horse that was so stressed (or excited) that its 5th leg was in prominent evidence. (Talk about eye-popper!) Other than watching movies or television, Travels With Sheila has never actually seen a horse being shoed. (It's the little things in life....)
Mardin has a beyond fascinating old bazaar. A labyrinth of dark, covered, narrow and intricate passages with little hidey-holes dug into the walls. This bazaar is special not for a selection of old antiques or purchases for Westeners but because it is a small, personal and truly authentic bazaar for the locals. There were women and men dressed in the distinctive and traditional Kurdish clothing along with so much to see.
The friendliest people, speaking Turkish and Arabic ,who were thrilled to death when we came up with a few words in their languages and wanted to interact. Again...loved Mardin.

One of the famous shops in Mumbai for fine arts and artefacts is Phillips Antiques. Which has been in business since 1860. That is close to 150 years. This shop is located opposite Regal Cinima in Colaba, South Mumbai. This is where you can expect to find a variety of oil paintings, carvings, masks, silverware and other things.
I am Farukisa, I am the owner of the shop. The shop was founded 1860 by Mr. Phillips. We purchased this shop, my great-grandfather, in 1920. It is a very old established shop in Mumbai selling works of art and photographs, maps, folk and tribal art. This table has a display of unusual and unique tribal masks from Maharashtra. They are 40 years old and cost around 35000 rupees.
Over here we have a nice collection of Indian folk paintings. These are called Mifil paintings, they come from Bihar, using natural colors, from extracts of flowers and fruits. These wooden carvings, which are 50 to 60 years old, are the yalis from Kerala. These are the original 1920 oleographs from the Raja Ravivarman Press. These are exclusive photographs of old Bombay, taken in the pre-independence era between 1855 and 1914. They cost anywhere from 3000 to 5000.
If you are looking at old prints and maps you need to keep them in a dry environment. Humidity is bad for pictures generally. As for other objects, I think any, there is no special care for them. Except just do not drop them. I am Mustufa, showing you Mumbai.
