Probing the cybersecurity of 3D printing, scaling the digital transformation of manufacturing, and developing quantum-safe encryption for the next evolution of the Internet, Matt Goldstein, Managing Director at M12, Microsoft’s Venture Fund, shares with us the criticality of investing in companies exploring the frontiers of cybersecurity and infrastructure.
“No one thinks their front door lock is obnoxious,” shares Goldstein, yet there remains a consumer hurdle in adopting baseline cybersecurity practices such as updating software, avoiding password reuse, and leveraging multi-factor authentication. Fear-mongering is one approach, but also “it’s up to us both as cybersecurity practitioners – call them lockbuilders – as well as the homebuilders, the application builders, to make their solutions and products inherently more secure and inherently less attractive to attackers,” tells Goldstein.
Also discussed is Goldstein’s path from being a “bad software developer” to venture capital, including the workings of M12, its relationship with Microsoft, and ever-present opportunities for value creation among security startups. “Cybersecurity will never be solved. It is a fundamentally asymmetric problem. The economic incentives of attackers to get incredibly creative match the economic incentives of defenders to find newer and better creative solutions to their attacks.”

Matthew Goldstein is a senior at Chatham High School and will soon attend Temple University to study architecture. Matthew has always loved getting outside and being active as much as possible. In his talk, "A Croc is a powerful thing", Matthew shares the impact the footwear company Crocs has had on him. His story explains how Crocs gave him the opportunity to gain a new perspective of the outdoors and widened his eyes to the impact of the global warming crisis. He shares with his audience that instead of arguing about global warming, try and teach someone to gain more appreciation for the world around us. This experience has taught Matthew to never give up on an idea that is important to you. Just one voice can change the perspective of the world. Matthew Goldstein is a senior at Chatham High School and will soon attend Temple University to study architecture. Matthew has always loved getting outside and being active as much as possible. Matt, Switzerland
Matt is a village, and former municipality, in the municipality of Glarus Süd and canton of Glarus in Switzerland. Matt lies in the valley of the Sernf river, and consists of the village of Matt itself, and the mountain hamlet of Weissenberge.
History
Matt is first mentioned in 1273 as Mattun.
In 1879, the valley of the Linth river was connected to the Swiss railway network by the opening of the Swiss Northeastern Railway line from Weesen, but Matt, in the side-valley of the Sernf river, remained unserved. This impacted the local economy, and various proposals were brought forward to provide rail service to the Sernf valley. Eventually, on 8 July 1905, the Sernftal tramway, a metre gauge roadside electric tramway, was opened connecting Schwanden with Matt and other communities as far as Elm. Service on this line continued until 31 May 1969, when it was replaced by road services. In 1967, a cable car was opened to link Matt and Weissenberge.
On 1 January 2011, Matt became part of the new municipality of Glarus Süd.

Matthew Goldstein is a senior at Chatham High School and will soon attend Temple University to study architecture. Matthew has always loved getting outside and being active as much as possible. In his talk, "A Croc is a powerful thing", Matthew shares the impact the footwear company Crocs has had on him. His story explains how Crocs gave him the opportunity to gain a new perspective of the outdoors and widened his eyes to the impact of the global warming crisis. He shares with his audience that instead of arguing about global warming, try and teach someone to gain more appreciation for the world around us. Probing the cybersecurity of 3D printing, scaling the digital transformation of manufacturing, and developing quantum-safe encryption for the next evolution of the Internet, Matt Goldstein, Managing Director at M12, Microsoft’s Venture Fund, shares with us the criticality of investing in companies exploring the frontiers of cybersecurity and infrastructure.
“No one thinks their front door lock is obnoxious,” shares Goldstein, yet there remains a consumer hurdle in adopting baseline cybersecurity practices such as updating software, avoiding password reuse, and leveraging multi-factor authentication. Fear-mongering is one approach, but also “it’s up to us both as cybersecurity practitioners – call them lockbuilders – as well as the homebuilders, the application builders, to make their solutions and products inherently more secure and inherently less attractive to attackers,” tells Goldstein.
Also discussed is Goldstein’s path from being a “bad software developer” to venture capital, including the workings of M12, its relationship with Microsoft, and ever-present opportunities for value creation among security startups. “Cybersecurity will never be solved. It is a fundamentally asymmetric problem. The economic incentives of attackers to get incredibly creative match the economic incentives of defenders to find newer and better creative solutions to their attacks.”

His story explains how Crocs gave him the opportunity to gain a new perspective of the outdoors and widened his eyes to the impact of the global warming crisis. He shares with his audience that instead of arguing about global warming, try and teach someone to gain more appreciation for the world around us. This experience has taught Matthew to never give up on an idea that is important to you. Just one voice can change the perspective of the world. Probing the cybersecurity of 3D printing, scaling the digital transformation of manufacturing, and developing quantum-safe encryption for the next evolution of the Internet, Matt Goldstein, Managing Director at M12, Microsoft’s Venture Fund, shares with us the criticality of investing in companies exploring the frontiers of cybersecurity and infrastructure.
“No one thinks their front door lock is obnoxious,” shares Goldstein, yet there remains a consumer hurdle in adopting baseline cybersecurity practices such as updating software, avoiding password reuse, and leveraging multi-factor authentication. Fear-mongering is one approach, but also “it’s up to us both as cybersecurity practitioners – call them lockbuilders – as well as the homebuilders, the application builders, to make their solutions and products inherently more secure and inherently less attractive to attackers,” tells Goldstein.
Also discussed is Goldstein’s path from being a “bad software developer” to venture capital, including the workings of M12, its relationship with Microsoft, and ever-present opportunities for value creation among security startups. “Cybersecurity will never be solved. It is a fundamentally asymmetric problem. The economic incentives of attackers to get incredibly creative match the economic incentives of defenders to find newer and better creative solutions to their attacks.”

Matthew Goldstein is a senior at Chatham High School and will soon attend Temple University to study architecture. Matthew has always loved getting outside and being active as much as possible. In his talk, "A Croc is a powerful thing", Matthew shares the impact the footwear company Crocs has had on him. His story explains how Crocs gave him the opportunity to gain a new perspective of the outdoors and widened his eyes to the impact of the global warming crisis. He shares with his audience that instead of arguing about global warming, try and teach someone to gain more appreciation for the world around us. This experience has taught Matthew to never give up on an idea that is important to you. Just one voice can change the perspective of the world. Matthew Goldstein is a senior at Chatham High School and will soon attend Temple University to study architecture. Matthew has always loved getting outside and being active as much as possible.
