Genesis 47:28,29a“And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years. And the time drew nigh that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, …bury me not, I pray thee in Egypt: ….Swear unto me… then in 50:25,26 “And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, ….ye shall carry up my bones form hence. So Joseph died, ….and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.” The question is why all the concern of what happens to their bones after they die? But before we speak of that let us note that the Book of Genesis begins with God creating the heaven and the earth….which was “THE WORLD THAT THEN WAS” 2pet3:6 in verse 1. Of this time we know little of the happenings except its sure destruction evidenced by verse 2 “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” That is to say as Peter said: “….the heavens and the earth, which are now,…..” 2pet3:7 So it has been understood verse 1 has to do with “Creation” and verse 2-31 have to do with “Re-Creation.” We see then that Genesis “beginnings” starts with Creation then Re-Creation with the Creation of Man, a Living Soul, and ends with man in a coffin. What we are to see and understand is Man, made in God’s image, was made for a purpose, to take dominion over what God had Re-Created and gave him authority to do so. And in so doing would put satan on notice so to speak. God, presumably, at the time of Re-Creation of heavens and earth, created He also Sheol, the place of the dead (unknown to us if there then, at the creation of man, those disembodied physical beings were confined or yet roamed the earth….) . Sheol is first mentioned in Genesis by Jacob as to the place he thought his lost son, Joseph, had gone DOWN unto. God having given all authority of the Re-Creation into Adam’s hands would of at the least had knowledge of its existence, and likely had been there in the pre-fallen state. What is sure is that Adam’s seed were aware of its existence. “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” What can be implied is that Jesus through the victory associated with His Resurrection took the Keys of Hell and Death of which satan had gained some authority in…and that through the fall of Adam and Eve. ONE OF THE TENANTS OF THE JEWISH AND CHRISTIAN FAITH What then becomes obvious to the question of why was Jacob and Joseph so concerned about their bones after they died…..is they knew that they were going into an intermediate state…that is death, That state where the spirit goes back unto God who gave it Eccl 12:7, our Body goes to the coffin, and our soul goes unto Hades… but they knew they would rise from the dead in the Resurrection, and receive their bones and flesh back again. Let us stop here and ponder the question….Where are the bones of Joseph today? THE INTERMEDIATE STATE UNDERSTANDING IS ESSENTIAL TO A CHRISTIAN. “However dim Scripture may be in its portrayal of the intermediate state, it is at least explicit in negativing the current conceptions of Hades, both Roman and Protestant.  Nothing short of a betrayal of the original Christian position has been the abandonment, through sheer unbelief, of the clauses in the Creed on Hades and the Ascension: if these clauses are merely figurative and pictorial (the Modernist legitimately retorts) so can be the clauses on the Virgin Birth and the Resurrection.  Thus also the modern obliteration of the doctrine of Hades has dislocated, and to a large degree nullified, the doctrine of the Resurrection of the Dead, which, when an intermediate world is eliminated, is made so unnecessary as to slip out of belief.  The elimination of a single truth is a hurt done to all revelation…” “….for to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and the living.” Rom14:9 The intermediate state is that state man awaits after death until his final state is determined at his appointed resurrection. 1Sam 2:6-10 “Jehovah killeth, and maketh alive: He bringeth down to Sheol, and bringeth up.
