Beaune (French pronunciation: [bon]) is the wine capital of Burgundy in the Côte d'Or department in eastern France. It is located between Paris and Geneva.
Beaune is one of the key wine centres in France and the annual wine auction of the Hospices de Beaune is the primary wine auction in France. The town is surrounded by some of the world's most famous wine villages, while the facilities and cellars of many producers, large and small, are situated in Beaune itself. With a rich historical and architectural heritage, Beaune is considered the "Capital of Burgundy wines".
It is an ancient and historic town on a plain by the hills of the Côte d'Or, with features remaining from the pre-Roman and Roman eras, through the medieval and renaissance periods and up to recent history and modern times.
Beaune is a walled city, with about half of the battlements, ramparts, and the moat, having survived and in good condition, and the central "old town" is extensive. Historically Beaune is intimately connected with the Dukes of Burgundy.

We stayed just outside the historic town centre which is surrounded by a moat and which wall. The Bouzaize river flows under the town, there is a wash house, Lavoir St Jacques, built 1887, on its banks. We took the tourist train for an orientation trip of the town and surrounding area then visited the famous hospice for the poor built 1443 and the Collegiale Basque Notre Dame. The next day we went to Nuits Saint Georges with the Elise St Symphorien (13th century), the museum (which was closed), bought some wine at L’Imaginarium (which had a video show of the history of their wine as well as a tasting) and finally Abbaye Notre Dame de Citeau, a Cistercian Abbey. The next day we bought a picnic and hired bikes to cycle along the very well marked “Route des Grands Crus” through the vineya...
Burgundy is a calm and cultivated corner of France, where fine living is intimately tied to nature and traditions run strong. We'll slow down to enjoy the region's edible, drinkable, scenic, and floatable delights. We'll travel on a canal barge, visit a medieval hospice and a modern monastery, build a barrel, appreciate fine Burgundy wine, slurp escargot, and eat very, very well. If you're looking for quintessential French culture, you'll find it in Burgundy. © 2008 Rick Steves' Europe

http://www.europeanwaterways.com/ - A Visit to Beaune, France - The Capital of Burgundy Wine Country including the Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune). During our classic Burgundy cruise aboard hotel barge L'Impressionniste we cross the premier cru vineyards into Beaune, capital of Burgundy wine country with a history going back over 2,000 years. We absorb the fascinating 15th century Hotel Dieu Hospice and visit a local winery's cellars to sample some fine local wines. The capital of the Burgundy wine country, Beaune is one of the best preserved medieval cities in the region. Until the 14th century, Beaune was the residence of the Ducs de Bourgogne. In 1477 it was annexed by Louis XI. First a Gallic sanctuary and then a Roman town, Beaune is now a mecca for wine lovers. This thrivi...

Take a tour of Hospices de Beaune in Beaune, France -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. Between its medieval French architecture and its striking geometric patterns, the Hospices de Beaune is incredible. This hospital for the poor was first founded in 1443 and has expanded ever since. The brightly colored and stunning roofs were made using glazed ceramic tiles popular across Burgundy. The buildings of the hospital themselves are iconic of French architecture from the fifteenth century. Now, the Hospices is a museum, although a wine charity auction is held here annually. The four buildings of the hospital form a rectangle, with an open courtyard in the middle. Housed within the complex are several treasured pieces of 17th century art.
A plane ride over the vineyards of the Slopes of Gold, a visit to Chassagne-Montrachet, a romp through the Chalonaise, a tour of the famous outdoor market of Beaune, and an epic meal at Le Gourmandin are all on tap for this segment of The Wine Travelers.
