Kentucky (i/kənˈtʌki/, kən-TU-kee), officially the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is a state located in the east south-central region of the United States. Kentucky is one of four U.S. states constituted as a commonwealth (the others being Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts). Originally a part of Virginia, in 1792 Kentucky became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky is the 37th most extensive and the 26th most populous of the 50 United States.
Kentucky is known as the "Bluegrass State", a nickname based on the bluegrass found in many of its pastures due to the fertile soil. One of the major regions in Kentucky is the Bluegrass Region in central Kentucky which houses two of its major cities, Louisville and Lexington. It is a land with diverse environments and abundant resources, including the world's longest cave system, Mammoth Cave National Park, the greatest length of navigable waterways and streams in the contiguous United States, and the two largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River.
Russell is a home rule-class city on the south bank of the Ohio River in Greenup County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population was 3,645 during the year 2000 U.S. Census. Russell is a suburb of Ashland and part of the Huntington-Ashland-Ironton metropolitan area. It has close economic affiliations with its neighbors, Ashland and Flatwoods in Kentucky and Ironton in Ohio.
The hilly site near the confluence of White Oak Creek and the Ohio was chosen by pioneer Jeff Moore in 1823 in order to provide protection for his camp against attacks by local American Indian tribes. In 1829, James E. McDowell, William Lindsay Poage, and his brother erected an iron furnace; they named the foundry and the community that grew up around it Amanda Furnace after William's infant daughter. The furnace ceased operation in 1861.
John Russell and his Means and Russell Iron Company purchased the land of the present city beside Amanda Hill from the Poage brothers. They laid out and established the town of Riverview in 1869 in expectation of an expansion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad westward from Huntington, West Virginia, to Cincinnati, Ohio. Ferry service to Ohio began in 1870, local landowners agreed to rename the community after its founder in 1873, and the city was formally incorporated under the name Russell in 1874. The expected C&O spur did not arrive until 1889 but, when it did, it constructed a railyard, roundhouse, and shops and the city grew quickly. The city celebrates this influence with annual "Russell Railroad Days" each August.

The C&O; Rail Yard complex spans the towns of Russell, Wurtland and Worthington Kentucky along the Ohio River. It was once known as the largest individually owned rail yards in the world and today still ranks as one massive switching yard. The complex includes a locomotive roundhouse, rolling stock repair shop and an idled car manufacturing shop. Many of the jobs have gone extinct over the years due to economic turmoil. We can only hope for an upturn that brings back some of the life that's gone but not forgotten. I've been wanting to fly over this location for a good while and finally took the time to launch from three different points to cover the three plus mile expanse of rails and shops! I hope to fly again over this massive industrial site!

It's the last day of December in 1990 and I took off for the Huntington to Russell area. CSX had no trains moving, so I went exploring to the Russell, Kentucky yard. Shot some video of some ex-Chessie equipment. An old Seaboard System GP16 was around along with GP39's with their yard slug sets.

Yesterday, my father and I made a "little" hour and a half jaunt from our home here in West Virginia over to Russell, Kentucky. The reason why we had decided to go down there was that both he and I had been wanting to get some shots in and around the large CSX rail yard that is located in town. After getting our car back on the road after its timing chain had broke and bent a valve. We decided that today, Sunday, would be the perfect day to head down there. So after we had to stop and get a new tire put on the left rear of our car. We made it to the east end of Russell Yard where "RU Cabin" stands as it still guards the westbound yard entrance coming into the main yard. Even though we were there for about I'd say an hour at best. We didn't leave Russell, Kentucky disappointed in the least ...

Took a short vacation to eastern Kentucky - had a blast! This video contains short segments of that trip. Visited Cumberland Falls, Daniel Boone National Forest, Natural Bridge State Resort Park and Red River Gorge. If you love the outdoors you will love this area. You can hike, swim, kayak, rock climb, zip line, white water, just about anything outdoors. There are not a lot of fancy smancy restaurants, but plenty of mom and pop places to get your burger on. Rented a Chalet on the side of a mountain and the price was roughly the same as a nice hotel room. In fact I found everything reasonably priced and some things down right cheap. If you want an outdoors vacation and you are on a budget, this is the place to go. Thanks for watching!!

In this game, Robert Morris University upset the defending National Champions University of Kentucky in the 1st round of the NIT Tournament. Russell had 14pts 5rebs 3steals (5-11FG 2-4 3ptFG 2-2FTs) in 33 minutes while shutting down Alex Poythress defensively to 6 points. Alex would have been a lottery pick in this year’s NBA draft if he chose to leave. APBasketball
