Sami (name)

Sami or Sammy (Arabic: سامي‎, IPA: [ˈsaːmiː], Finnish pronunciation: [sɑmi]) is a given name and surname of different origins and meanings, most prevalent in the Arab world and Scandinavia. When spelled in English, it can be spelled as Sammy and often mistakenly confused as the abbreviated English name Sammy.

Sami or Sammy can be an Arabic name meaning "elevated" (الرفعة) or "sublime" (السُّمُوّ), or a Turkish name, a Finnish male name derived from Samuel, or an American name abbreviated from Samantha or Samuel.

When used outside of English speaking countries – specifically amongst non-native Arabic speakers – the name Sammy or Sami is mistakenly confused with Samee (Arabic for 'one who hears') or Samir (another Arabic name altogether). However, it is in fact an unabbreviated Arabic name derived from the verb saamaa (ساما) and yasmo (يسمو) which means to transcend. This is from the root samaa (سما,سمو) which means to be high, elevated, eminent, prominent.

The feminine version of this name in Arabic is Samiya or Samia (سامِيَة).

Sammy (band)

Sammy was the partnership of guitarist Luke Wood and guitarist/vocalist Jesse Hartman. The band was initially signed to Smells Like Records, the label owned by Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. Later the band signed to DGC/Geffen. The band was signed to Fire Records in the UK and Europe.

The band released two albums, an EP, and multiple singles before calling it quits. Debut Album (issued in 1994) and Kings of the Island Empire (an EP issued in 1995) were both put out by Smells Like Records. Their second and final full-length, Tales of Great Neck Glory, which was issued by DGC/Geffen, followed in 1996 shortly before the band decided to split up.

The fifth season of Ellen, an American television series, began September 24, 1997, and ended on July 22, 1998. It aired on ABC. The region 1 DVD was released on November 28, 2006. Note that although Disc 2 of the Region 1 DVD release has "The Funeral" before "Womyn Fest," the content of the next two episodes suggests that "Womyn Fest" goes before "The Funeral."

Ellen Semple Barry

Ellen (Semple) Barry (October 4, 1899 – June 12, 1995) was an American portrait artist whose subjects included Dean Acheson, William S. Paley, Vincent Astor, W. Averell Harriman and Pablo Picasso. Some of her portraits are hung in the National Portrait Gallery. She was married to the playwright Philip Barry.

Biography

Ellen Semple was the daughter of Lorenzo Semple (a Southern lawyer), and Mary Semple.

Portraits hung in the National Portrait Gallery include Lady Bird Johnson, Archibald MacLeish and Eleanor Roosevelt.
