Born as Richard Slavin in a Jewish family, he studied a number of religious paths such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam. At the age of 19, he began traveling through Europe and the Middle-East, aiming for India and eventually settling for over a year in the Himalayas. He was living as a sannyasi (monk) in India when he first met with Krishna devotees near Delhi. Through contact with the devotees in Vrindavan, and after receiving the name Ratim Krishna from Swami Bon, Radhanath Swami began to focus exclusively on his spiritual path in Krishna Consciousness. In 1971, Radhanath Swami observed A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada during the Cross Maidan festival in Mumbai. After leaving India, Radhanath Swami returned to the United States, where he joined the New Vrindaban ISKCON farm community in West Virginia during July 1972. There he accepted initiation from Prabhupada in February 1973 receiving the name Radhanath das, later to receive the name Radhanath Swami, when he received sannyasa initiation from Kirtananda Swami in 1981.

We are not this body. We are spirit souls. We are part and parcel of the Supreme absolute - Sri Krishna. The goal of our life is to establish the lost connection with the Supreme Personality - Sri Krishna. All of us are looking for love. However, we are trying to search for so called love in this material world - a world which is full of greed, envy lust, anger, false ego & illusion. This material world is full of sorrow and misery. It is a temporary world. One can land into problems at any step. Thus our attempts to find real happiness in this material world invariably ends up in frustration. Real happiness can be found when we reawaken the dormant love or Krishna consciousness. Human life is a chance for us to reestablish this relationship. Krishna consciousness is achieved b...

Best Things Comes From Difficult Reversals - Radhanath Swami Maharaj
Presented October 1, 2015. Radhanath Swami, born as Richard Slavin in Chicago, came to confront a deep sense of alienation from the materialism and the civil injustices of mid-20th century America. Near-death encounters, apprenticeships with advanced yogis, and years of travel along the pilgrim's path led him to the inner sanctum of India's mystic culture. Now a monk in a Krishna-bhakti lineage and teacher of the devotional path of Bhakti Yoga, he is the author of "The Journey Home," a memoir of his search for spiritual truth. In 1970, at the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, he reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, he returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what he had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home (San Rafael, CA: Mandala Publishing, 2009). Reviewers have called Radhanath's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a t...

When I first arrived in India, I went to the Himalayas and adopted the life of a sadhu. I wore sadhu robes, had a little bag and pot, traveled through the jungles and mountains, and learned from many great rishis, yogis, and sages. Sometimes I lived in jungle caves with yogis, and sometimes I lived in caves alone, practicing meditation. At other times I studies Buddhism in Budhist monasteries. In this way I traveled around India, searching for God-realization. Everyone wanted to initiate me, because to have a foreign disciple was very prestigious for yogis, gurus, and all other spiritual personalities. But I felt that until I found a guru whom I would never leave, I could not accept initiation. At one point I went to Bombay to renew my visa, and as I was walking down the street I sa...
