Swimming next to a manta ray is a great privilege, because she is one of the giants of the ocean, the manta rays can measure eight meters and weigh 1400 kilograms, recently we learned that they are family of sharks.
We know very little about the manta ray, they are a mystery, because they can't live in an aquarium. The greatest danger to the manta ray is the fishing harpoon. But the manta rays are still a really mistery.

The Difference Between Manta Rays And Stingrays !
Manta rays are large sea animals that live in tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate waters worldwide. Their side or pectoral fins have evolved into wide triangular wings that they use to easily propel themselves through the water. With a diamond shaped body and wing spans reaching over 20’ across, manta rays are one of the largest animals in the ocean. Their broad blanket-like bodies earned them the name manta that means cloak or blanket in Spanish. In Hawaiian, they are called hahalua. Like many other open ocean animals, manta rays have countershading coloration - dark on the topside (dorsal side) and light on the underside (ventral side).
Manta ray versus Stingray
Manta rays are related to stingrays. Both have flattened body shapes and wide pectoral fins that are fused to the head. One of the biggest differences between manta rays and stingrays is that manta rays do NOT have a tail "stinger" or barb like stingrays. There are other differences as well. Stingrays dwell on the ocean bottom, but manta rays live in the open ocean. A stingray's mouth is located on the underside of its body whereas the mouth of the manta ray is along the front edge of its body.

A GIANT manta ray gave a British diver a show of thanks - after he untangled it from a commercial fishing line. Diving instructor Paul Slater, 54, was on a group trip near Cocos Island, Costa Rica when they spotted the 16ft giant caught up in a net. With help from American Don Shellhammer and their dive master, they swam up behind and used knives to unpin it from the line. Although it was scared at first and swam away they said it eventually slowed to a stop so they could release it. They then watched in amazement as it finally broke loose and began to swim around them in barrel rolls in what looked like a gesture of thanks.

Manta ray
Manta rays are large rays belonging to the genus Manta. The larger species, M. birostris, reaches 7 m (23 ft 0 in) in width while the smaller, M. alfredi, reaches 5.5 m (18 ft 1 in). Both have triangular pectoral fins, horn-shaped cephalic fins and large, forward-facing mouths. They are classified among the Elasmobranchii (sharks and rays) and are placed in the family Myliobatidae (eagle rays).
Mantas are found in temperate, subtropical and tropical waters. Both species are pelagic; M. birostris migrates across open oceans, singly or in groups, while M. alfredi tends to be resident and coastal. They are filter feeders and eat large quantities of zooplankton, which they swallow with their open mouths as they swim. Gestation lasts over a year, producing live pups. Mantas may visit cleaning stations for the removal of parasites. Like whales, they breach, for unknown reasons.
Both species are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Anthropogenic threats include pollution, entanglement in fishing nets, and direct harvesting for their gill rakers for use in Chinese medicine. Their slow reproductive rate exacerbates these threats. They are protected in international waters by the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals, but are more vulnerable closer to shore. Areas where mantas congregate are popular with tourists. Only a few aquariums are large enough to house them. In general, these large fish are seldom seen and difficult to study.

A GIANT manta ray gave a British diver a show of thanks - after he untangled it from a commercial fishing line. Diving instructor Paul Slater, 54, was on a group trip near Cocos Island, Costa Rica when they spotted the 16ft giant caught up in a net. With help from American Don Shellhammer and their dive master, they swam up behind and used knives to unpin it from the line. Although it was scared at first and swam away they said it eventually slowed to a stop so they could release it. They then watched in amazement as it finally broke loose and began to swim around them in barrel rolls in what looked like a gesture of thanks.
