Yuan Shikai (16 September 1859 – 6 June 1916) was a Chinese general, politician and Emperor, famous for his influence during the late Qing Dynasty, his role in the events leading up to the abdication of the last Qing Emperor, his autocratic rule as the first formal President of the Republic of China, and his short-lived attempt to restore monarchy in China, with himself as the Hongxian Emperor (Chinese: 洪憲皇帝).
Yuan Shikai was born in the village of Zhangying (張營村), Xiangcheng County, Chenzhou Prefecture, Henan, though the clan later moved 16 kilometers southeast of Xiangcheng to a hilly area that was easier to defend. There the Yuans had built a fortified village, Yuanzhaicun (Chinese: 袁寨村; literally: "the fortified village of the Yuan family").
Yuan's family was affluent enough to provide Yuan with a traditional Confucian education. As a young man he enjoyed riding, boxing, and entertainment with friends. Though hoping to pursue a career in the civil service, he failed the Imperial examinations twice, leading him to decide on an entry into politics through the Huai Army, where many of his relatives served. His career began with the purchase of a minor official title in 1880, which was a common method of official promotion in the late Qing. Using his father's connections, Yuan travelled to Tengzhou, Shandong, and sought a post in the Qing Brigade. Yuan's first marriage was in 1876 to a woman of the Yu family who bore him a first son, Keding, in 1878. Yuan Shikai married nine further concubines throughout the course of his life.
The Emperor of China (Chinese: 皇帝; pinyin: Huángdì) was the title of any sovereign of Imperial China reigning between the founding of the Qin dynasty that unified China in 221 BC, until the abdication of Puyi in 1912 following the Xinhai Revolution and the establishment of the Republic of China. The emperor was also referred to as the "Son of Heaven" (Chinese: 天子; pinyin: tiānzǐ), a title that predates the Qin unification, and recognized as the ruler of "all under heaven" (i.e., the whole world). In practice not every Emperor held supreme power in China, although this was usually the case.
Emperors from the same family are classified in historical periods known as dynasties. Most of China's imperial rulers have commonly been considered members of the Han ethnicity, although recent scholarship tends to be wary of applying present day ethnic categories to historical situations. During the Yuan and Qing dynasties China was ruled by ethnic Mongols and Manchus respectively. The orthodox historical view sees these as non-native dynasties that became sinicized, though some recent scholars (such as those of the New Qing History school) argue that the interaction between politics and ethnicity was far more complex. Nevertheless, in both cases these rulers claimed the Mandate of Heaven to assume the role of traditional Confucian emperors in order to rule over China proper.

General Yuan Shikai was the premier military commander of the late Qing dynasty. He served as Imperial Resident in Korea before the start of the Sino-Japanese War when Yuan Shikai returned to active military service. Later he was made commander of the New Army, the most modern military force in Imperial China. He turned against Emperor GuangXu to support Empress-Dowager Cixi in stopping reform efforts but after her death he made an agreement with the republican revolutionaries to obtain the Qing abdication in return for becoming President of the Republic of China. In December 1915 - January 1916 he proclaimed himself Emperor of China. However, the republicans adamantly opposed him while most monarchists remained loyal to the former Qing Emperor and his own family suffered from in-fighting ...

Linda Jaivin gives the 72nd Annual George E Morrison Lecture at The Australian National University - Morrison's World. When George Morrison was born in 1862 in Geelong, the Colony of Victoria was only eleven years old and the Second Industrial Revolution twelve. Freud was five, Oscar Wilde eight. Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal had only been in print five scandalous years and Darwin's On the Origin of Species three. Queen Victoria sat on the throne of England. Travel was arduous, slow and for the adventurous. Most people apprehended the wider world through books and journals; photography was not yet a mass or even highly portable technology. Morrison was a toddler by the time issues of the London Illustrated News arrived at the family home by sea mail with etchings of the burning of ...
* by Tingjia Liang * 22 x 30 inches * Making the digital collage with three elements : Kewpie , Steampunk and Chinese painting. * The original Chinese painting is of Empress Chabi (1227-1281) . Chabi is the wife to the Khubilai (a.k.a. Shizu) who had conquered all of China in 1270s. * Casting Kewpie as an Empress of old China is just for fun. The adorable appearance of Kewpie is quite different from the stern face of Empress Chabi.

China Empire - Documentary The Empire of China (simplified Chinese: 中华帝国; traditional Chinese: 中華帝國; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Dìguó) was a short-lived attempt by statesman and general Yuan Shikai from late 1915 to early 1916 to reinstate monarchy in China, with himself as the Hongxian Emperor (simplified Chinese: 洪宪皇帝; traditional Chinese: 洪憲皇帝; pinyin: Hóngxiàn Huángdì). The attempt was ultimately a failure; it set back the Chinese republican cause by many years and fractured China into a period of conflict between various local warlords.

Brief History of my father who was part of the KMT - The KMT was founded by Song Jiaoren and Sun Yat-sen shortly after the Xinhai Revolution of 1911. Sun was the provisional president but he did not have military power and ceded the first presidency to the military leader Yuan Shikai. After Yuan's death, China was divided by warlords, while the KMT was able to control only part of the south. Later led by Chiang Kai-shek, the KMT formed the National Revolutionary Army and succeeded in its Northern Expedition to unify much of China in 1928. It was the ruling party in mainland China from 1928 until its retreat to Taiwan in 1949 after being defeated by the Communist Party of China (CPC) during the Chinese Civil War. In Taiwan, the KMT continued as the single ruling party until the reforms in t...

http://www.soas.ac.uk/china-institute/ This panel discussion titled "China: Remnants of Revolution" was held at the SOAS China Institute on 27 April 2016. The year 2016 will see many anniversaries of events that remind us of China's turbulent revolutionary history. It will be exactly 100 years since President Yuan Shikai's ill-fated attempt to declare himself Emperor and restore the monarchy; 90 years since the start of the Northern Expedition, which ended warlord rule and reunified China; 50 years since the start of the Cultural Revolution, which tore up the very fabric of Chinese society, and 40 years since the death of Mao Zedong. Since then, the economic and social changes that have taken place in China more recently have been revolutionary in their own right. The SOAS China Institut...
Pinned by a dream state
You are fearless
And your empty arms
Waiting for no one
You wanted to be wanted
When you're head over heels
In shock
And the little green apples falling around you
Party to this party
You are blameless
Ask a question
You get an earful
You are wanted you are wanted
When you're head over heels
In shock
And the little green apples falling around you
When you're head over heels
In shock
And the little green apples falling around you
In the darkest room
Where the music's loud
The mouth you're seeking finds your mouth
We are wanted we are wanted
When you're head over heels
In shock
And the little green apples falling around you
When you're head over heels
