Right now, is the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki. They are the first and only instances in history of nuclear weapons being used in warfare.

Alright let’s get into it!
1) Godzilla
Godzilla or Gojira, the giant Japanese dinosaur-looking monster, a worldwide pop culture icon; who’s been in numerous movies. The latest one in 2014, also starring Heisenberg, Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver!
Why am I mentioning this? Well, Godzilla owes its existence to the atomic bombs. In the aftermath, with the devastation still fresh in the Japanese consciousness, Godzilla was created as a metaphor for nuclear weapons and their destructive capabilities.
2) The Korean Casualties
An enormous number of Koreans also perished in the blast. In fact, around 25% of casualties were Koreans. Korea was under Japanese rule at the time so there were many drafted or conscripted Koreans in Hiroshima & Nagasaki. It’s unfortunate that the Korean victims of this tragedy have often been neglected.
3) Close Call Kyoto
Today’s Kyoto landscape would have been greatly altered, and not for the better, if the Americans had gone about their original plan. The targets were in fact supposed to be Hiroshima & Kyoto. However, the US Secretary of War at the time, Henry L Stimson, insisted on sparing the so called City of Ten Thousand Shrines.
4) The Pamphlet Warnings
Just prior to dropping the Atomic bombs, the US Airforce released pamphlets or leaflets from their planes warning Japanese citizens of the impending destruction. They were largely ineffective.
5) The Little Boy & The Fat Man
These were the American codenames of the two atomic bombs.
6) The American Casualties
12 American airmen were captured, then taken to the Chugoku Military Police Headquarters in Hiroshima, where the American weapon of mass destruction indiscriminately took them out. And they were probably not the only American POWs on the ground that day.
7) Go
An important Go tournament was held in the suburbs of Hiroshima, about 5 km or 3 miles from ground zero; and on August 6th 1945, a pivotal match up was ongoing between champion Hashimoto and the challenger Iwamoto. When the atomic bomb went off, people were injured, buildings were damaged, and the game came to an immediate halt. Fortunately no one died as tournament officials had earlier moved the game away from the blast radius after coming across the American pamphlets.
The players took this opportunity to have a quick lunch break. Afterwards on the same day, they finished the game. White won.
8) Operation Meetinghouse
As devastating as the atomic bombs were, it didn’t even rank as the most destructive bombing event of WW2. That title goes to the deathly firebombing of Tokyo by the US Air Force, also known as Operation Meetinghouse. This was estimated to be the single most destructive bombing attack not just in Japan, but in history.
9) The Flame Of Peace
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was built in dedication to the legacy of Hiroshima as the first city in the world to suffer a nuclear attack. In the park, sits The Flame of Peace which has burned continuously since 1964, and will remain lit until all nuclear weapons are removed from the world and the planet is free from nuclear threat.
10) The Improbable Survivor
Tsutomu Yamaguchi worked for the Mitsubishi company, and on August 6th, 1945, he was away from home on a business trip in Hiroshima.
He witnessed the Little Boy dropping from the sky and the explosion ruptured his eardrums, blinded him, and left him with serious burns. But he was alive. The very next day, he dragged his body to a station, made his way out of Hiroshima and back to his hometown. At home, he finally received treatment for his wounds.
Two days later, despite being seriously injured and heavily bandaged, he informed Mitsubishi that he was back from his Hiroshima business trip and ready to report to work. So, he went to work, as if nothing major had happened.
Yamaguchi was lucky to have survived the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb. However, he was unlucky that he went back home..

In August 1945, during the final stage of the Second World War, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two bombings, which killed at least 129,000 people, remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in human history.
As the Second World War entered its sixth and final year, the Allies had begun to prepare for, what was anticipated to be, a very costly invasion of the Japanese mainland. This was preceded by an immensely destructive firebombing campaign that obliterated many Japanese cities. The war in Europe had concluded when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on May 8, 1945, but with the Japanese refusal to accept the Allies' demands for unconditional surrender, the Pacific War dragged on. Together with the United Kingdom and China, the United States' calls for the unconditional surrender of the Japanese armed forces in the Potsdam Declaration on July 26, 1945 was buttressed with the threat of "prompt and utter destruction".
By August 1945, the Allied Manhattan Project had successfully detonated an atomic device in the New Mexico desert and subsequently produced atomic weapons based on two alternate designs. The 509th Composite Group of the U.S. Army Air Forces was equipped with a Silverplate Boeing B-29 Superfortress that could deliver them from Tinian in the Mariana Islands. A uranium gun-type atomic bomb (Little Boy) was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, followed by a plutonium implosion-type bomb (Fat Man) on the city of Nagasaki on August 9. Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the acute effects of the atomic bombings killed 90,000–166,000 people in Hiroshima and 39,000–80,000 in Nagasaki; roughly half of the deaths in each city occurred on the first day. During the following months, large numbers died from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness and malnutrition. In both cities, most of the dead were civilians, although Hiroshima had a sizable military garrison.
On August 15, just days after the bombing of Nagasaki and the Soviet Union's declaration of war, Japan announced its surrender to the Allies. On September 2, it signed the instrument of surrender, effectively ending World War II. The bombings' role in Japan's surrender and their ethical justification are still debated.

Hiroshima
Hiroshima (広島市, Hiroshima-shi) (
listen ) is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the largest city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshu, the largest island of Japan. The city's name, 広島, means "Wide Island" in Japanese. Hiroshima gained city status on April 1, 1889. On April 1, 1980, Hiroshima became a designated city. As of 2006, the city had an estimated population of 1,154,391. Kazumi Matsui has been the city's mayor since April 2011.
Hiroshima is best known as the first city in history to be targeted by a nuclear weapon when the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped an atomic bomb on the city at 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, near the end of World War II.

Sengoku period (1589–1871)
Hiroshima was established on the river delta coastline of the Seto Inland Sea in 1589 by the powerful warlord Mōri Terumoto, who made it his capital after leaving Kōriyama Castle in Aki Province.Hiroshima Castle was quickly built, and in 1593 Terumoto moved in. Terumoto was on the losing side at the Battle of Sekigahara. The winner of the battle, Tokugawa Ieyasu, deprived Mori Terumoto of most of his fiefs including Hiroshima and gave Aki Province to Masanori Fukushima, a daimyo who had supported Tokugawa.

Peter Jennings
Peter Charles Archibald Ewart Jennings, CM (July 29, 1938 – August 7, 2005) was a Canadian-American journalist and news anchor. He was the sole anchor of ABC's World News Tonight from 1983 until his death in 2005 of complications from lung cancer. A high-school dropout, he transformed himself into one of American television's most prominent journalists.
Jennings started his career early, hosting a Canadian radio show at the age of nine. He began his professional career with CJOH-TV in Ottawa during its early years, anchoring the local newscasts and hosting a teen dance show, Saturday Date, on Saturdays.
In 1965, ABC News tapped him to anchor its flagship evening news program. His inexperience was attacked by critics and others in television news, making for a difficult first stint in the anchor chair. Jennings became a foreign correspondent in 1968, reporting from the Middle East.
He returned as one of World News Tonight's three anchors in 1978, and was promoted to the role of sole anchor in 1983. Jennings was also known for his marathon coverage of breaking news stories, staying on the air for 15 or more hours straight to anchor the live broadcast of events such as the outbreak of the Gulf War in 1991, the Millennium celebrations in 2000, and the September 11 attacks in 2001. In addition to anchoring, he was the host of many ABC News special reports and moderated several American presidential debates. Having always been fascinated with the United States, Jennings became a naturalized United States citizen in 2003.

Alright let’s get into it!
1) Godzilla
Godzilla or Gojira, the giant Japanese dinosaur-looking monster, a worldwide pop culture icon; who’s been in numerous movies. The latest one in 2014, also starring Heisenberg, Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver!
Why am I mentioning this? Well, Godzilla owes its existence to the atomic bombs. In the aftermath, with the devastation still fresh in the Japanese consciousness, Godzilla was created as a metaphor for nuclear weapons and their destructive capabilities.
2) The Korean Casualties
An enormous number of Koreans also perished in the blast. In fact, around 25% of casualties were Koreans. Korea was under Japanese rule at the time so there were many drafted or conscripted Koreans in Hiroshima & Nagasaki. It’s unfortunate that the Korean victims of this tragedy have often been neglected.
3) Close Call Kyoto
Today’s Kyoto landscape would have been greatly altered, and not for the better, if the Americans had gone about their original plan. The targets were in fact supposed to be Hiroshima & Kyoto. However, the US Secretary of War at the time, Henry L Stimson, insisted on sparing the so called City of Ten Thousand Shrines.
4) The Pamphlet Warnings
Just prior to dropping the Atomic bombs, the US Airforce released pamphlets or leaflets from their planes warning Japanese citizens of the impending destruction. They were largely ineffective.
5) The Little Boy & The Fat Man
These were the American codenames of the two atomic bombs.
6) The American Casualties

An important Go tournament was held in the suburbs of Hiroshima, about 5 km or 3 miles from ground zero; and on August 6th 1945, a pivotal match up was ongoing between champion Hashimoto and the challenger Iwamoto. When the atomic bomb went off, people were injured, buildings were damaged, and the game came to an immediate halt. Fortunately no one died as tournament officials had earlier moved the game away from the blast radius after coming across the American pamphlets.
The players took this opportunity to have a quick lunch break. Afterwards on the same day, they finished the game. White won.

As devastating as the atomic bombs were, it didn’t even rank as the most destructive bombing event of WW2. That title goes to the deathly firebombing of Tokyo by the US Air Force, also known as Operation Meetinghouse. This was estimated to be the single most destructive bombing attack not just in Japan, but in history.
9) The Flame Of Peace
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was built in dedication to the legacy of Hiroshima as the first city in the world to suffer a nuclear attack. In the park, sits The Flame of Peace which has burned continuously since 1964, and will remain lit until all nuclear weapons are removed from the world and the planet is free from nuclear threat.
10) The Improbable Survivor
Tsutomu Yamaguchi worked for the Mitsubishi company, and on August 6th, 1945, he was away from home on a business trip in Hiroshima.
He witnessed the Little Boy dropping from the sky and the explosion ruptured his eardrums, blinded him, and left him with serious burns. But he was alive. The very next day, he dragged his body to a station, made his way out of Hiroshima and back to his hometown. At home, he finally received treatment for his wounds.
Two days later, despite being seriously injured and heavily bandaged, he informed Mitsubishi that he was back from his Hiroshima business trip and ready to report to work. So, he went to work, as if nothing major had happened.
Yamaguchi was lucky to have survived the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb. However, he was unlucky that he went back home..

Right now, is the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki. They are the first and only instances in history of nuclear weapons being used in warfare.

Alright let’s get into it!
1) Godzilla
Godzilla or Gojira, the giant Japanese dinosaur-looking monster, a worldwide pop culture icon; who’s been in numerous movies. The latest one in 2014, also starring Heisenberg, Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver!
Why am I mentioning this? Well, Godzilla owes its existence to the atomic bombs. In the aftermath, with the devastation still fresh in the Japanese consciousness, Godzilla was created as a metaphor for nuclear weapons and their destructive capabilities.
2) The Korean Casualties
An enormous number of Koreans also perished in the blast. In fact, around 25% of casualties were Koreans. Korea was under Japanese rule at the time so there were many drafted or conscripted Koreans in Hiroshima & Nagasaki. It’s unfortunate that the Korean victims of this tragedy have often been neglected.
3) Close Call Kyoto
Today’s Kyoto landscape would have been greatly altered, and not for the better, if the Americans had gone about their original plan. The targets were in fact supposed to be Hiroshima & Kyoto. However, the US Secretary of War at the time, Henry L Stimson, insisted on sparing the so called City of Ten Thousand Shrines.
4) The Pamphlet Warnings
Just prior to dropping the Atomic bombs, the US Airforce released pamphlets or leaflets from their planes warning Japanese citizens of the impending destruction. They were largely ineffective.
5) The Little Boy & The Fat Man
These were the American codenames of the two atomic bombs.

In August 1945, during the final stage of the Second World War, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two bombings, which killed at least 129,000 people, remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in human history.
As the Second World War entered its sixth and final year, the Allies had begun to prepare for, what was anticipated to be, a very costly invasion of the Japanese mainland. This was preceded by an immensely destructive firebombing campaign that obliterated many Japanese cities. The war in Europe had concluded when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on May 8, 1945, but with the Japanese refusal to accept the Allies' demands for unconditional surrender, the Pacific War dragged on. Together with the United Kingdom and China, the United States' calls for the unconditional surrender of the Japanese armed forces in the Potsdam Declaration on July 26, 1945 was buttressed with the threat of "prompt and utter destruction".
By August 1945, the Allied Manhattan Project had successfully detonated an atomic device in the New Mexico desert and subsequently produced atomic weapons based on two alternate designs. The 509th Composite Group of the U.S. Army Air Forces was equipped with a Silverplate Boeing B-29 Superfortress that could deliver them from Tinian in the Mariana Islands. A uranium gun-type atomic bomb (Little Boy) was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, followed by a plutonium implosion-type bomb (Fat Man) on the city of Nagasaki on August 9. Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the acute effects of the atomic bombings killed 90,000–166,000 people in Hiroshima and 39,000–80,000 in Nagasaki; roughly half of the deaths in each city occurred on the first day. During the following months, large numbers died from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness and malnutrition. In both cities, most of the dead were civilians, although Hiroshima had a sizable military garrison.
On August 15, just days after the bombing of Nagasaki and the Soviet Union's declaration of war, Japan announced its surrender to the Allies. On September 2, it signed the instrument of surrender, effectively ending World War II. The bombings' role in Japan's surrender and their ethical justification are still debated.

From our month in Japan, we decided to explore more of the country using our Japan Rail Passes and visit Osaka. Being based in Osaka for a week, we were able to visit the other cities of Kyoto, Kobe and Hiroshima via the Shinkansen bullet train.
In Kyoto, we visited the hillside shrine of 10,000 red gates – Fushimi Inari along with the bamboo forest in Arashiyama via the Hozugawa river cruise. In Kobe, we tasted some of the most tender beef in the world: Kobe Beef. In Hiroshima, we spent time at the national peace memorial museum to learn about the devastating effects of the nuclear bomb dropped at the end of World War Two; as well as visiting the shrine in the sea at Miyajima.

From our month in Japan, we decided to explore more of the country using our Japan Rail Passes and visit Osaka. Being based in Osaka for a week, we were able to visit the other cities of Kyoto, Kobe and Hiroshima via the Shinkansen bullet train.
In Kyoto, we visited the hillside shrine of 10,000 red gates – Fushimi Inari along with the bamboo forest in Arashiyama via the Hozugawa river cruise. In Kobe, we tasted some of the most tender beef in the world: Kobe Beef. In Hiroshima, we spent time at the national peace memorial museum to learn about the devastating effects of the nuclear bomb dropped at the end of World War Two; as well as visiting the shrine in the sea at Miyajima.

To most people, Hiroshima means just one thing. The city's name will forever evoke thoughts of 6 August 1945, when Hiroshima became the target of the world's first atomic-bomb attack. Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park is a constant reminder of that day, and it attracts visitors from all over the world. But leafy Hiroshima, with its wide boulevards and laid-back friendliness, is a far from depressing place. Present-day Hiroshima is home to a thriving and internationally minded community, and it's worth spending a couple of nights here to experience the city at its vibrant best.
Atomic Bomb Dome
================
Perhaps the starkest reminder of the destruction visited upon Hiroshima in WWII is the Atomic Bomb Dome. Built by a Czech architect in 1915, it was the Industrial Promotion Hall until the bomb exploded almost directly above it. Everyone inside was killed, but the building was one of very few left standing near the epicentre. A decision was taken after the war to preserve the shell as a memorial.
The building has since become a haunting symbol of the city, and was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1996. Try to wander past in the evening when it's quiet and the propped-up ruins are floodlit.

The main building of Hiroshima's premier museum houses a collection of items salvaged from the aftermath of the atomic bomb. The displays are confronting and personal – ragged clothes, a child's melted lunch box, a watch stopped at 8.15am – and there are some grim photographs. While upsetting, it's a must-see in Hiroshima. The east building presents a history of Hiroshima and the development and destructive power of nuclear weapons.
The museum is undergoing major renovations. The east building will be closed until spring 2016, at which point the main building will close until a 2018 grand reopening. During its closure, some items from the main building will be on display in the east building. Check the website for the latest developments.
Peace Memorial Park

Hugged by rivers on both sides, Peace Memorial Park is a large, leafy space criss-crossed by walkways and dotted with memorials. Its central feature is the long tree-lined Pond of Peace leading to the cenotaph . This curved concrete monument holds the names of all the known victims of the bomb. Also at the pond is the Flame of Peace , set to burn on until all the world's nuclear weapons are destroyed.
Look through the cenotaph down the pond and you'll see it frames the Flame of Peace and the Atomic Bomb Dome across the river – the park was planned so that these features form a straight line, with the Peace Memorial Museum at its southern end.
Just north of the road through the park is the Children's Peace Monument , inspired by Sadako Sasaki, who was two years old at the time of the atomic bomb. When Sadako developed leukaemia at 11 years of age, she decided to fold 1000 paper cranes. In Japan, the crane is the symbol of longevity and happiness, and she believed if she achieved that target she would recover. She died before reaching her goal, but her classmates folded the rest. A monument was built in 1958. Sadako's story inspired a nationwide spate of paper-crane folding that continues to this day. Surrounding the monument are strings of thousands of colourful paper cranes sent here from school children around the country and all over the world.
Nearby is the Korean Atomic Bomb Victims Memorial . Many Koreans were shipped over to work as slave labourers during WWII, and Koreans accounted for more than one in 10 of those killed by the atomic bomb. Just north of this memorial is the Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound – the ashes of thousands of unclaimed or unidentified victims are interred in a vault below.
There are other monuments and statues throughout the park, and plenty of benches, including along the riverside looking across to the Atomic Bomb Dome, making this a pleasant area to take a break and reflect.
