Allenwood
Allenwood (Irish: Fiodh Alúine) is a small Irish village in County Kildare situated on the Grand Canal. Allenwood is located about 50 km (31 mi) from Dublin and half way between Rathangan and Clane in North County Kildare.
The main road through Allenwood is the R403 and the village is within 20 km (12 mi) of both the M4 (to the north) and M7 (to the south) motorways.
Businesses in the area are centred on the crossroads, and consist of several shops and a public house. There is also a business park at the location of the old Power Station. The Grand Canal is traversed by means of a noteworthy bridge, known locally as the Skew (or Shee) Bridge.
Allenwood developed in the nineteenth century as a coaching post along the Edenderry Road. Later residential development primarily occurred on local roads to the east of the village, typically as single plot developments.
Allenwood is the location of a former electricity power station which was fueled by peat from the surrounding bog lands. The station was built in 1952 by the Electricity Supply Board (ESB). The cooling tower which could be seen from over 30 km (19 mi), was demolished shortly after the station was retired in 1994.

Ardclough
Ardclough, officially Ardclogh (Irish: Ard Cloch, meaning "high stone"), is a village and community in the parish of Kill County Kildare, Ireland, two miles (3 km) off the N7 national primary road. Amongst its buildings today are a national school, a church, Ardclough GAA Club, and one shop "Buggys". Ardclough also contains the historic round tower at Oughterard. It is the burial place and probable birthplace of Arthur Guinness, who is said to have returned to the maternal homestead of the Reads at Huttonread to give birth in the tradition of the time.
Ardclough is located located at 53°17′53″N 6°34′07″W / 53.29807°N 6.56874°W / 53.29807; -6.56874. just below two detached foothills of the Wicklow Mountains, Lyons Hill and Oughterard on some of the most fertile soils in Ireland. The River Liffey passes within a one kilometre radius. The main transport arteries to the south and south west of Ireland pass through, the main railway line to Cork and Tralee, the canal to Shannonbridge, and the N7 which passes nearby.

Athy
Athy (
/əˈθaɪ/;Irish: Baile Átha Í, meaning "town of the ford of Ae") is a market town at the meeting of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal in County Kildare, Ireland, 72 kilometers southwest of Dublin.
A population of 10,490 (2011 Census preliminary results) makes it the sixth largest town in Kildare and the 50th largest in the Republic of Ireland, with a growth rate of 58% since the 2002 census. From the first official records in 1813 (population 3,192) until 1891 (population 4,886) and again in 1926-46 and 1951-61 Athy was the largest town in Kildare. In 1837 the population was 4,494.
Arhy or Baile Átha Í is named after a 2nd century chieftain, Ae, who is said to have been killed on the river crossing, thus giving the town its name "the town of Ae's ford".
The town developed from a 12th century Anglo-Norman settlement to an important stronghold on the local estates of the FitzGerald earls of Kildare, who built and owned the town for centuries.
The first town charter dates from the 16th century and the town hall was constructed in the early 18th century. The completion of the Grand Canal in 1791, linking here with the River Barrow, and the arrival of the railway in 1846, illustrate the importance of the town as a commercial centre. From early on in its history Athy was a garrison town loyal to the Crown. English garrisons stayed in the Military Barracks in Barrack Lane after the Crimean War and contributed greatly to the town's commerce. Home for centuries to English soldiers, Athy gave more volunteer soldiers to the Great War of 1914-18 than any other of similar size town in Ireland.

Atlantic Ocean
The Atlantic Ocean is the second-largest of the world's oceanic divisions. With a total area of about 106,400,000 square kilometres (41,100,000 sq mi), it covers approximately 20% of the Earth's surface and about 26% of its water surface area. The first part of its name refers to Atlas of Greek mythology, making the Atlantic the "Sea of Atlas".
The oldest known mention of "Atlantic" is in The Histories of Herodotus around 450 BC (Hdt. 1.202.4): Atlantis thalassa (Greek: Ἀτλαντὶς θάλασσα; English: Sea of Atlas); see also: Atlas Mountains. The term Ethiopic Ocean, derived from Ethiopia, was applied to the southern Atlantic ocean as late as the mid-19th century. Before Europeans discovered other oceans, the term "ocean" itself was synonymous with the waters beyond the Strait of Gibraltar that we now know as the Atlantic. The early Greeks believed this ocean to be a gigantic river encircling the world.
The Atlantic Ocean occupies an elongated, S-shaped basin extending longitudinally between Europe and Africa to the east, and the Americas to the west. As one component of the interconnected global ocean, it is connected in the north to the Arctic Ocean (which is sometimes considered a sea of the Atlantic), to the Pacific Ocean in the southwest, the Indian Ocean in the southeast, and the Southern Ocean in the south. (Other definitions describe the Atlantic as extending southward to Antarctica.) The equator subdivides it into the North Atlantic Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean.

Ballitore
Ballitore (Irish: Béal Átha an Tuair) is a village in County Kildare, Ireland, sometimes spelt "Ballytore".
It is noted for its historical Quaker associations. The Quaker School in Ballitore was founded by Abraham Shackleton (1697–1771) in 1726 which catered for Quakers from many parts of Ireland as well as both Protestant and Catholic local children. The former home of Mary Leadbeater, a local diarist, is now a Quaker Museum.
Pupils came from as far away as Bordeaux, Jamaica and Norway to stay and study in the school, staying in a row of houses in the village whose attics had been knocked into one long room.
In the 2002 Census Ballitore had a population of 338. In 1837 the population was 933 .

Ballymore Eustace
Ballymore Eustace (An Baile Mór in Irish) is a small town situated in County Kildare in Ireland, although until 1836 it lay within a "pocket" of County Dublin. It lies close to the border with County Wicklow.
The town's name, which is frequently shortened to "Ballymore" in everyday usage, derives from the Irish An Baile Mór ("the big town") with the addition – to distinguish it from several other Ballymores in Ireland – of the family name (Fitz)Eustace. A fuller version of the town's official name in Irish is Baile Mór na nIústasach ("big town of the Eustaces").
Ballymore Eustace is located at the junction of the R411 and R413 regional roads, on the River Liffey, over which the R411 is carried by a relatively rare seven-arch bridge. It had a population of 786 at the 2002 census. The town is served by Dublin Bus, with route number 65, four times daily, at irregular intervals.
Ballymore Eustace in the 13th century - at the time simply known as Ballymore - was the site of a castle, which in 1244 was granted an eight day fair to be held on site by Henry III. The upkeep of the castle was given to Thomas Fitzoliver FitzEustace as constable in 1373, whose family name came to be associated with the town, lending it its present name. Several of Thomas' descendants also held the office of Constable, including his grandson Sir Richard FitzEustace ( appointed 1414 ) and his great-grandson Sir Robert FitzEustace ( appointed 1445). No trace of the castle exists today, but the importance of Ballymore is emphasized by the fact that Parliament was held there in 1389. It was a border town of "the Pale", giving it strategic importance in the area, but also leading to its raiding by local families.

Bog of Allen
The Bog of Allen (Móin Alúine in Irish) is a large raised bog in the centre of Ireland between the rivers Liffey and Shannon.
The bog's 958 square kilometers (370 square miles) stretch into County Offaly, County Meath, County Kildare, County Laois, and County Westmeath. Peat is mechanically harvested on a large scale by Bórd na Móna,[citation needed] the government-owned peat production industry. The area has miles of narrow gauge industrial railways for transporting turf to processing plants and turf powered power plants. In addition, the cutover portions are used as area for grazing. The bog is crossed by the Grand Canal and the Royal Canal.
The Irish Peatland Conservation Council describes the bog as "an important area of peatland, as much a part of Irish natural heritage as the Book of Kells." The bog is much reduced after centuries of agricultural exploitation and recent encroachments by development.[citation needed] Efforts are underway to preserve sections of it.
The peatlands of the Bog of Allen contain a valuable part of the archaeological record. Due to the special preservation conditions within peat, many kinds of artefact which do not normally survive are preserved; these include for instance wooden structures and objects. In many parts of the Bog of Allen industrial milling has uncovered archaeological remains such as trackways. These trackways are wooden walkways constructed through prehistory and into the medieval period which allowed people and animals to cross the extensive areas of peatland, which can give us an insight into the economy and way of life of the societies that existed around the bog. The preservation conditions in bogs also preserve a range of palaeoenvironmental evidence such as pollen and plant macrofossils which are often studied alongside the archaeological evidence to inform about the environment on and around the bog.

Calverstown
Calverstown (Irish: Baile an Chalbhaigh) is a small village in County Kildare, Ireland. It lies 6 km (3.7 mi) south of the town of Kilcullen and about 16 km (9.9 mi) from each of the towns of Athy, Kildare, Naas and Newbridge. It is an old settlement located close to the archaeological sites of Dún Ailinne and Old Kilcullen. The village has a stream running through it with another to the south. In the 2006 Census it had a population of 650.
Calverstown has been in existence as a named location since the early medieval period. An early reference to lands described as "Terra Philippi Vituli" (Latin for "Philip of Calfs land") provides an unaudited confirmation in the form of a petition from the Royal Hospitallers of Kilmainham listing their possessions to Pope Innocent III in 1212. The Irish name Baile an Chalbhaigh was historically anglicised as Ballinchalwey, Ballinchallowe and Ballinchalloe.
In a note to an edition of Richard de Ledrede's account of the Kyteler Witchcraft trial Wright (1843, 56-7) noted that Walter le Veele, or Calf, of Calfstown was Chancellor of Kildare Cathedral and was made Bishop of Kildare in 1299. He purchased the manor of Norragh, in which Calverstown is situated, from Geoffrey de Norragh before his death in 1332. The barony was inherited by his nephew John Calf, who passed it to his son Sir Robert Calf and to his daughter Elizabeth Calf who married William Wellesley of Baronsrath, whose heirs held the barony after that. The name of the town appears to be derived from the anglicised name of the le Veele family.

Caragh
Caragh or Carragh (Irish: Cearthach) is a village in County Kildare, Ireland. It is located on the R409 regional road between the River Liffey and the Grand Canal approximately 4 km north-west of Naas. The village is also 8 km from Clane and 15 km from Newbridge.
Caragh is also the name of the parish that includes the village itself, surrounding townlands and Prosperous village, about 3 km north-west from the village.
The main features in the village are a large Roman Catholic church (Our Lady & St. Joseph), a shop, a pub, a national primary school and Mondello motor racing circuit (approx. 1.5 km from village centre). As of March 2010, the church and school in the village are undergoing extensive redevelopment.
Kildare County Council, OSI and other government bodies and agencies use the spelling "Carragh". This spelling is used only on official maps, planning notices and other official documents.
The village is situated in the northern half of County Kildare approximately 3 km north-west of junction 10 of the M7 motorway. The Liffey flows adjacent to the village. There is a single traffic lane bridge crossing the Liffey approaching Caragh on the R409 from the south. A local historian claims that it is the oldest bridge still in existence on the entire course of the river.

Carbury
Carbury (Irish: Cairbre), also formerly spelt "Carbery", is a village in north-west County Kildare, Ireland. It is situated in the on the R402 regional road between Enfield and Edenderry, near the border with County Offaly. The source of the River Boyne is located just north of the village.
The area is dominated by the ruins of the great Tudor mansion of the Colleys on the top of Carbury Hill, which was also known as Fairy Hill. The motte on the hill was probably built by Meiler FitzHenry who was granted the area by Strongbow. It was acquired by the de Berminghams in the 14th century, before being taken by the native Irish in the 15th century. In 1588 it was granted to the Colley family, patrilineal ancestors of the Dukes of Wellington, who built a large stronghouse in the 17th century.
Carbury Hill (OS Ref (IE): N685348 / Sheet: 49. Latitude: 53° 21' 32.33" N and Longitude: 6° 58' 15.71" W) is close to Trinity Well, the source of the River Boyne that runs by Brú na Bóinne. Carlow
Carlow (Irish: Ceatharlach) is the county town of County Carlow in Ireland. It is situated in the south-east of Ireland, 84 km from Dublin. County Carlow is the second smallest county in Ireland by area, however Carlow Town is the 14th largest urban area in Ireland by population according to the 2006 census. The population of the town and its environs is 23,030 according to the 2006 census. The River Barrow flows through the town, and forms the historic boundary between counties Laois and Carlow: the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 included the town entirely in County Carlow. The settlement of Carlow is thousands of years old and pre-dates written Irish history. The town has played a major role in Irish history, serving as the capital of the country in the 14th century. It was voted the cleanest town in Ireland by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) in 2010.
The name Carlow is an anglicization of the Irish language name Ceatharlach. Historically, it was anglicized as Caherlagh,Caterlagh and Catherlagh, which are closer to the Irish spelling. According to logainm.ie, the first part of the name derives from the Old Irish word cethrae ("animals, cattle, herds, flocks"), which is related to ceathar ("four") and therefore signified "four-legged". The second part of the name is the ending -lach.

Castledermot
Castledermot (Irish: Diseart Diarmad, meaning "Dermot's Hermitage") is an inland village in the south-east of Ireland in County Kildare, about 75 km (47 mi) from Dublin, and 10 km (6.2 mi) from the town of Carlow. The N9 road from Dublin to Waterford passes through the village but completion of a bypass is due during 2010.
The population of the town was 887 at the time of the (January 2006) census, a 22% increase over the figure recorded in 2002. The settlement is growing due to its proximity to Dublin.
The River Lerr (a tributary of the larger River Barrow, the second longest river in Ireland) flows through the town.
In the town there are various remains including a round tower, two well-preserved granite high crosses and the ruins of a Franciscan friary. 5 km (3.1 mi) away is Kilkea Castle, once the residence of the Duke of Leinster, but now a hotel and health farm. The castle was built by the English Norman Hugh de Lacy in 1180, and later passed to the Fitzgeralds. Gerald FitzGerald, 11th Earl of Kildare, is said to have practised magic in Kilkea Castle which earned him the nickname "the Wizard Earl".

The name Celbridge (pronounced sell-bridge) is derived from the Irish Cill Droichid (pronounced kill-drokid) meaning "Church bridge" or "Church by the bridge". The Irish name was historically anglicised as Kildroicht, Kildrought, Kildroght and Kildrout.
Celbridge is the third largest town in County Kildare, the 22nd largest town in the province, and the 36th largest on the island of Ireland. The population increased by 7.8% between 2002 and 2006. Historically this was the town's most rapid growth rate in absolute terms (3,011 in four years). In percentage terms it was a slowdown on previous growth rates which were at one stage the highest in Ireland. As of the census of 2011, there were 19,537 people living in Celbridge. Celtic Sea
The Celtic Sea (Irish: An Mhuir Cheilteach; Welsh: Y Môr Celtaidd; Cornish: An Mor Keltek; Breton: Ar Mor Keltiek; French: La mer Celtique) is the area of the Atlantic Ocean off the south coast of Ireland bounded to the east by Saint George's Channel; other limits include the Bristol Channel, the English Channel, and the Bay of Biscay, as well as adjacent portions of Wales, Cornwall, Devon, and Brittany. The southern and western boundaries are delimited by the continental shelf, which drops away sharply.
The Celtic heritage of the bounding lands to the north and east gives the sea its name, first proposed by E. W. L. Holt at a 1921 meeting in Dublin of fisheries experts from England, Ireland, Scotland and France. The northern portion of this sea had previously been considered as part of Saint George's Channel and the southern portion as an undifferentiated part of the "Southwest Approaches" to Britain. The need for a common name came to be felt because of the common marine biology, geology and hydrology. It was adopted in France before being common in the English-speaking countries. It was adopted by marine biologists and oceanographers, and later by oil exploration firms. It is named in a 1963 British atlas, but a 1972 article states "what British maps call the western approaches, and what the oil industry calls the Celtic Sea [...] certainly the residents on the western coast [of Great Britain] don't refer to it as such."

Clane
Clane (Irish: Claonadh) is a town in County Kildare, Ireland, 32 km (20 mi) from Dublin. Its population of 6,702 makes it the eighth largest town in Kildare and the 78th largest in Ireland. It is on the River Liffey and in the barony of Clane.
The town most probably owes its origin to the foundation of an abbey in the sixth century, from about 520 A.D., when St. Ailbe, Bishop of Ferns, founded an Abbey in Clane, and made St. Senchel the Elder its first Abbot. St. Ultan Tua, who used to put a stone into his mouth to prevent him from speaking during Lent, and his brother Fotharnaise, are said to have been buried in Clane. They were brothers of Maighend, Abbot of Kilmainham, from whom the parish and church of Mainham, near Clane, were probably called.
The ruins of the Franciscan monastery founded at Clane by Sir Gerald FitzMaurice, 3rd Lord Ophaly, in 1272 still exist. In 1542 Henry VIII’s Commissioner granted the site and precincts of this House of Friars, manor or preaching-house of the preaching Friars of Clane to Robert Eustace, Roger Roche and Ed. Brown for £177. Besides about 70 acres (28 ha) of land in the neighbourhood - its possessions consisted of a church, cemetery, chapter-house, dormitory, store, kitchen, two chambers, stable and orchard. The dormitory and other buildings probably stood on the north side of the Abbey Church, and have long since completely disappeared.

Coill Dubh
Coill Dubh (Irish pronunciation: [kəilʲ d̪ˠʊw] or [kəilʲ d̪ˠʊv]) is a town in Ireland in northern County Kildare, at the junction of the R403 and R408 regional roads, about 40 km (25 mi) from Dublin. Its population of 684 (2006 Census) represents an increase of 15.5pc on the 2002 census.
The village is home to one of the strongest hurling clubs in County Kildare.
The town was established in 1956 on the townland of Blackwood ("Coill Dubh" is an Irish translation), just off the R403 between Prosperous, County Kildare and Timahoe, County Kildare to accommodate workers on the Bord na Mona works supplying a peat fired power station in Allenwood. It replaced earlier temporary workers camps at Killinthomas, County Kildare, Mucklon, County Kildare and Timahoe, County Kildare, with 160 houses and 4 shops.
The cutover area of Timahoe Bog which formerly supplied sod peat to Allenwood power station has been allowed to recolonise naturally for 20 years. It has become a focal point for naturalists and academics.

County Carlow
County Carlow (Irish: Contae Cheatharlach) is a county in Ireland. It is part of the South-East Region and is also located in the province of Leinster. It is named after the town of Carlow, which lies on the River Barrow. Carlow County Council is the local authority for the county. The population of the county is 54,532 according to the 2011 census.
There are seven historic baronies in the county: Carlow, Forth, Idrone East, Idrone West, Rathvilly, St Mullin's Lower and St Mullin's Upper.

Eadestown (Irish: Baile Éide) is a small village in County Kildare, Ireland. It is situated on the R410 Regional Road south of Naas, between Naas and Blessington, County Wicklow.
The Parish of Eadestown is composed of the civil parishes of Rathmore, Kilteel, Tipper and Haynestown. Its churches are: The Immaculate Conception, Eadestown; St. Laurence O'Toole Kilteel.

Eadestown GAA is based in Eadestown. The team won the Kildare Senior Football Championship in 1970. Punchestown Racecourse is also located in Eadestown and this host many annual meetings, with the highlight being a national hunt festival, usually held in late April.
Traditional local families pronounce the name as "Ayds-town", while many others pronounce it as "Eeds-town".

Graiguenamanagh
Graiguenamanagh or Graignamanagh (Irish: Gráig na Manach, meaning "village of the monks") is a town in County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is located on the R705 regional road by the border with County Carlow on the River Barrow at the foot of Brandon Hill. It is home to Duiske Abbey, the largest and perhaps the finest of the thirty-four medieval Cistercian abbeys in Ireland.
The River Barrow, historically a significant highway, was developed as a commercial navigation in the mid seventeen hundreds and Graiguenamanagh served as the main base for commercial barges operating on the river until barge traffic ceased in 1959. The barges that at one time lined the quaysides are now replaced by some one hundred pleasure craft.
Near to the town are the ruined remains of the early Christian church of Ullard, founded by Saint Fiachra in the sixth century. St Fiachra subsequently moved to France, where he is known as St Fiacre, and founded the celebrated monastery at Meaux. He is the patron saint of gardeners and taxi drivers; French cabs are often known as fiacres in his honour. Some few miles downstream from Graiguenamanagh the ruins of the ancient monastic establishment at St. Mullins are situated in an area of great beauty and historic interest.

Kilcock
Kilcock or Killcock (from Irish: Cill Choca meaning "Coca's cell") is a town and townland in the north of County Kildare, Ireland, on the border with County Meath. Kilcock is a dormitory town for many of those who work in Dublin. Its population of 4,100 (2006 Census) makes it the ninth largest town in Kildare and 86th largest in Ireland, having grown by 49.6pc since the 2002 census.
Local industries include a large distribution centre( Musgraves) which supplies SuperValu and Centra stores across the country. The town lies on the Royal Canal.
Kilcock takes its name from the 6th century Saint Coca who founded a church beside the river Rye, and who is traditionally said to have been a sister of St. Kevin of Glendalough; by occupation she was an embroiderer of church vestments, including those for St. Colmcille. A holy well dedicated to Coca, formerly thought to be lost in the back-yards of Kilcock, is known locally to be in the area behind the Ulster Bank, and her feast is remembered on 6 June. However, this commemoration is a modern revival as when the Ordnance Survey of the area was being made in 1837 it was recorded that "there is no old church in ruins in this parish nor is any patron saint or day remembered ... the meaning of the name Cille Choc is not remembered." When the present parish church was dedicated in 1867 it was named for St. Coca, and it had cost £10,000 to build to the design of architect J.J. McCarthy.

Kilcullen
Kilcullen (Irish: Cill Chuilinn), formally Kilcullen Bridge, is a small town on the River Liffey in County Kildare, Ireland. Its population of 3,473 (2011 Census makes it the 12th largest settlement in County Kildare and the fastest growing in the county, having doubled in population from 1,483 in the census of 2002. It is situated primarily in the Barony of Kilcullen (in the Civil Parish of Kilcullen), with part in the Barony of South Naas (Civil Parish of Carnalway), and subsidiary areas include Logstown, Harristown, Carnalway and Brannockstown, Gilltown, Nicholastown, and Castlemartin.
Kilcullen Bridge replaced the original settlement of Kilcullen, now Old Kilcullen, in the centuries following the building of the great bridge at the future site of the town. Kildangan
Kildangan (Irish: Cill Daingin, meaning "the church of the fort") is a village in County Kildare in Ireland. During the Anglo-Norman settlement of Ireland, Maurice Fitzgerald of Allen built a castle as part of a defensive line, stretching along the River Barrow from Carlow to Lea Castle near Portarlington. Near the castle the church was built that gave the locality its name.
Kildangan is situated on the R417 between Monasterevin and Athy. The village lies close to the flood plain of the River Barrow, near the County Laois border. Kildangan is linked to Kildare town by means of the Local Road L3010, which passes through Kildangan Stud.
Kildangan railway station opened on 15 March 1909 and finally closed on 1 January 1963. Its last station master was Tommy Maher, who was in charge from 1958 until its closure in 1963. Kildangan is well served by road, however its location and lack of public transport creates a high car dependency.
Kildangan Village has a population of approximately 555, the vast majority of the population reside outside the village, in the District Electoral Division(DED) of Kildangan and Ballybrackan. Between 1996 and 2011 there was a 151% increase in population of the Kildangan DED as the M7 motorway and increased frequency of rail services from Kildare opened up Kildangan for housing development. Kildangan is approximately 60 km from Dublin, and the majority of the population increase is of commuters employed in Dublin City and the surrounding area. Of the indigenous population Bord na Móna is the main source of employment in the immediate area. Kildangan Stud, and the agricultural sector also constitute a major source of local employment. Population figures are for Kildangan DED, covering an area of 1500 hectares approx and containing the Townlands of Ballygreany, Ballyvarney, Duneany, Fennor, Grangebeg, Kildangan and Rathmuck.

Rich in heritage and history, Kildare Town dates from the 5th Century, when it was the site of the original ‘Church of the Oak' and monastery founded by St. Brigid. This became one of the three most important Christian foundations in Celtic Ireland.
It was said that Brigid's mother was a Christian and that Brigid was reared in her father's family, that is with the children of his lawful wife. From her mother, Brigid learned dairying and the care of the cattle, and these were her occupations after she made a vow to live a life of holy chastity. Both St. Mel of Ardagh and Bishop Mac Caille have been credited with the consecration of Brigid and some companions, after which the woman established a community beneath an oak tree, on a hill on the edge of the Curragh. Hence the name Cill Dara, the church of the oak.

Kilteel
Kilteel (Irish: Cill Chéile) is Ireland's primary tourist attraction, located in County Kildare, Ireland. In 2010 it was visited by over 3,000,000 people.
The village boasts the ruins of a 6th Century Monastic settlement and market place with world renowned Romanesque stone arches and carvings, an ancient graveyard and a 14th Century “Keep”. The Keep is in excellent repair and visits to it can be arranged with the present owner. All of these are under the auspices and care of the Office of Public Works.

The placename comes from the Old Norse Lax Hlaup which means "salmon leap". The name in Irish (Léim an Bhradáin) is a direct translation of this, and was first adopted in the 1890s. Today, the spelling Lexlip is sometimes used in English.
Leixlip was the site of the famous Battle of Confey, in which the Viking King Sigtrygg Caech of Dublin defeated the Irish King of Leinster around the year 917., The first settlement at Leixlip was an outpost of Early Scandinavian Dublin, built at the furthest point where longships could be rowed up the Liffey. The town was also home to Arthur Guinness's first brewery in 1755, where he brewed ales until he moved on to St. James's Gate Brewery, Dublin in 1759, where he first brewed Guinness. The first history of the town was published in 2005.

It is home to a branch of the National University of Ireland, a Pontifical University and Ireland's main Roman Catholic seminary, St Patrick's College. Maynooth is also the seat of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference and holds the headquarters of Ireland's largest development charity, Trócaire.
Maynooth is located on the R148 road between Leixlip and Kilcock, with the M4 motorway bypassing the town. Other roads connect the town to Celbridge, Clane, and Dunboyne. Maynooth is also on the Dublin to Sligo rail line and is served by a commuter train service.
The ancient name of Maynooth means the plain of Nuadhu. Nuadhu is referred to as the maternal grandfather of the legendary Fionn mac Cumhail in the Annals of the Four Masters.
Maynooth was a long-term centre for the Geraldine family, who dominated Irish affairs in various periods.
In the 1920s, the town was the unofficial home to the King of England's representative in Ireland, Domhnall Ua Buachalla, who declined to take up official residence in the Viceregal Lodge in the Phoenix Park, and whose family operated a hardware store in the town until 2005, the only store with an Irish language name in the town for many years.

Monasterevin (Irish: Mainistir Eimhín) is a town in County Kildare in Ireland. The town lies on the River Barrow and the Grand Canal. Its population of 3,710 (2011 Census) makes it the 11th largest town in Kildare and the 105th largest in Ireland.
Situated 63 km from Dublin on the R445 road, Monasterevin has been relieved of much through traffic by the opening in 2004 of a new section of the M7 motorway bypassing the town on the N7 Dublin to Limerick route. Monasterevin is well connected by rail, with trains from Dublin to the southwest (Cork, Limerick, and Tralee) and west (Galway and Mayo) all serving the town.
Monasterevin is a small town, with Georgian houses, on a flat expanse of country, and occupies a right angle bend on the river Barrow, as it changes direction from east to south.
Due to its unusual number of bridges, and the arrival in 1786 of the Grand Canal, the town is sometimes referred to as "The Venice of Ireland".
The land, from pastoral to bog, gets its name from St. Eimhin's (Evin) Monastery, which was built in the 6th century. This gave way in the 12th century to a house dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary by Dermot O'Dempsey, Prince of Offaly, whose mitred abbot sat as a baron in the Irish Parliament. This house disappeared and Moore Abbey was built in 1607, which was modernised in 1846, and was the seat of the Earls of Drogheda from the 18th century onwards. John McCormack the famous Irish tenor, rented the house for 9 years in 1936. The Abbey is now a convent, belonging to the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary.

Moone
Moone (Irish: Maen Colmcille, meaning "Colmcille's property")is a small village in the south of County Kildare, Ireland. It is on the former N9 road (now by-passed) about 80 km (50 mi) south of Dublin. It has only a few hundred inhabitants, a church, a National School, one shop and a small community centre. There is also pub called the Moone High Cross Inn.
The name Moone comes from the Irish "Maen Colmcille" which means "Colmcille's property".
The closest village to Moone is Timolin, about 1 kilometer to the north. The current county plan provides for joint development of Moone and Timolin.
Moone's most famous attribute is its High Cross, dating from the 7th century. It can be found about 1 kilometre from Moone along the road to Athy (at 52°58′48″N 6°49′31″W / 52.98°N 6.82528°W / 52.98; -6.82528) in the remains of an old abbey believed to have been established by Saint Colmcille. There is a local soccer club called Moone Celtic FC, the club's crest is a high cross obviously taken from the local structure. The club's pitch is Fortfield Park.

Muine Bheag is the official name of the town.[when?] The name comes from the Irish for "small thicket". It was historically anglicised as Moneybeg. The motto on the town's coat of arms is The Irrepressible Number and its Irish equivalent Uimhir Gan Choisc.
The English name Bagenalstown came from Lord Walter Bagenal, who based the town on Versailles in France, and the town's courthouse resembles that of Versailles. Bagenal built the town on the River Barrow to allow for trade and access to the town. He originally wanted the town to be called "New Versailles".
Muine Bheag/Erins Own have been winners of the Carlow Senior Hurling Championship on fourteen occasions, they last won in 1970. Saint Andrews have never won the Carlow Senior Football Championship but were finalists in 1977 and 1978. They won the 2011 Intermediate Football Championship this year however and will compete in the Senior grade again from next year.

Munster Blackwater
The Blackwater or Munster Blackwater (Irish: An Abhainn Mhór, The Great River) is a river which flows through counties Kerry, Cork, and Waterford in Ireland. It rises in the Mullaghareirk Mountains in County Kerry and then flows in an easterly direction through County Cork, through Mallow and Fermoy. It then enters County Waterford where it flows through Lismore, before abruptly turning south at Cappoquin, and finally draining into the Celtic Sea at Youghal Harbour. In total, the Blackwater is 169 kilometres long.
The Blackwater is notable for being one of the best salmon fishing rivers in the country. Like many Irish and British rivers, salmon stocks declined in recent years, but the Irish Government banned commercial netting of salmon off the coast of Ireland in November, 2006.

New Ross
New Ross (Irish: Ros Mhic Thriúin, formerly Ros Mhic Treoin) is a town in southwest County Wexford, Ireland. In 2011 it had a population of 8,151 people, making it the third-largest town in the county after Wexford and Enniscorthy.
The port town of New Ross dates from the Middle Ages. The earliest settlement in this area dates back to the 6th century when St. Abban of Magheranoidhe founded a monastery in what is now the Irishtown. The original earthen banked circular enclosure of his monastery was visible around the graveyard until about 10 years ago when it was unceremoniously removed by the council. It has been replaced by a concrete wall and steel fence. Its name, Ros, was shortened from Ros Mhic Treoin, or the Wood of the Son of Treon. Little is known of the town in pre-Norman times, except for the writings of St. Abban, who lived in the late 6th century. Newry River
Newry River and River Clanrye (Irish: An Rí) are names for one of the rivers of Ireland; it passes through the city of Newry and empties into Carlingford Lough near Warrenpoint. Some maps call the portion downstream from Newry to the Lough the 'Newry River' and the portion upstream of Newry the 'Clanrye' (as it curls around to its sources in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains), but not all sources make this distinction.
The word 'Clanrye' comes from the Irish An Gleann Rí meaning The King's Valley.
While the Newry River flows under the famous Newry Town Hall, according to the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland,[1] the Clanrye breaks away from the Newry River near Drummillar. The Clanrye then progresses under the main Belfast to Dublin (A1 road (Northern Ireland)) at Sheepbridge and onward toward the Mayobridge Road at the Crown Bridges and Ashtree Cottages. According to local tradition, however, the entire waterway is known as the Clanrye.
During one of Saint Patrick's exploratory missions to Ireland he set up camp on a sandy stretch of the Clanrye River. Whilst settling himself there he took the decision to plant a yew tree symbolising Ireland’s growing and strengthening faith. It is this story which gave Newry its name, Iúr Cinn Trá: the yew tree at the head of the strand (although this part of the riverbank does not resemble a beach today). A monastery, later replaced in 1144 by a Cistercian Abbey,[2] grew up around this yew.

River Avoca
The Avoca (Irish: Abhainn Abhóca; historically Abhainn Mhór / Abhainn Dé) is a river in County Wicklow, Ireland. It is contained completely within the county. The Avoca starts life as two rivers, the Avonmore (Irish: Abhainn Mhór, meaning "Big River") and the Avonbeg (Irish: Abhainn Bheag, meaning "Small River"). These join together at a spot called the Meeting of the Waters (Cumar an dá Uisce) in the Vale of Avoca, which is considered a local beauty spot, and was celebrated by Thomas Moore in his song of the same name.
The village of Avoca is situated on the river.
The Avoca flows into the Irish Sea at Arklow where it widens into a large estuary, giving Arklow its Irish language name an t-Inbhear Mór (the big inlet).[citation needed]
The valley of the Avoca has a large copper mine, and further downstream was the NET fertiliser factory (closed since 2002). These are said to have contributed greatly to pollution in the lower reaches of the river.
The railway line from Dublin to Wexford (and Rosslare) also passes along the Vale of Avoca, cutting inland from its mainly coastal route and the R752 road tightly follows the west bank of the Avoca from The Meetings to Arklow.

River Bandon
The River Bandon is a river in County Cork in Ireland. It rises at Nowen Hill (one of the Shehy Mountains), to the north of Drimoleague.
The river then flows to Dunmanway, before turning eastward towards the twin villages of Ballineen and Enniskean. The Bandon then flows through the centre of Bandon town, and on to the villages of Innishannon and Kilmacsimon, before draining into Kinsale Harbour on Ireland's south coast.
Tributaries of the Bandon include the Sally River and the Brewery River at Dunmanway, the "Small Blackwater" near Ballineen, and the Bridewell River at Bandon. The river is crossed by a total of 15 bridges (including two footbridges). There were also four railway bridges, one of which is still intact (on farmland near Dunmanway). The others, near Murragh, Bandon, and Inishannon, consist only abutments and/or piers, with the spans removed.
The River Bandon is famous for its Atlantic Salmon Fishing with the biggest recorded salmon caught in Ireland since 1991 being landed by Bill Canning of Goresbridge Co. Kilkenny on the 7th of July 2008. Mr Canning's Salmon weighed in at 28 lbs and 3 ozs and is on display in the Munster Arms hotel in Bandon town.

River Barrow
The Barrow (Irish: An Bhearú) is a river in Ireland. It is one of The Three Sisters; the other two being the River Suir and the River Nore. The Barrow is the longest and most prominent of the three rivers. At 192 km (120 mi), it is the second longest river in Ireland, behind the River Shannon.
The source of the River Barrow is at Glenbarrow in the Slieve Bloom Mountains in County Laois.

River Boyne
The River Boyne (Irish: An Bhóinn or Abhainn na Bóinne) is a river in Leinster, Ireland, the course of which is about 112 kilometres (70 mi) long. It rises at Trinity Well, Newberry Hall, near Carbury, County Kildare, and flows towards the Northeast through County Meath to reach the Irish Sea between Mornington, County Meath and Baltray, County Louth. Salmon and trout can be caught in the river, which is surrounded by the Boyne Valley. It is crossed just west of Drogheda by the Boyne River Bridge that carries the M1 motorway and by the Boyne Viaduct that carries the Dublin-Belfast railway line to the east.
Despite its short course, the Boyne has historical, archaeological and mythical connotations. It passes near the ancient city of Trim, Trim Castle, the Hill of Tara (the ancient capital of the High King of Ireland), Navan, the Hill of Slane, Brú na Bóinne (an archaeological site), Mellifont Abbey, and the medieval city of Drogheda. In the Boyne Valley can also be found other historical and archaeological monuments, like Loughcrew, Kells, Celtic crosses, castles, and more. The Battle of the Boyne, a major battle in Irish history, took place along the Boyne near Drogheda in 1690 during the Williamite war in Ireland.

River Brosna
The River Brosna (Irish: An Bhrosnach) is a river in Ireland, flowing through County Westmeath and County Offaly.
The river rises in Lough Owel north of Mullingar and is a tributary of the River Shannon. It meets the Shannon at Shannon Harbour.
The Brosna begins as a small river, flowing from Lough Owel in a south-south-westerly direction through Mullingar, into Lough Ennell. From Lough Ennell, the river Brosna flows into Kilbeggan, where it still powers the mill at Kilbeggan Distillery. The Brosna continues flowing southwest through Clara. East of Ferbane it is joined by the Silver River. From Ferbane it heads to Shannon Harbour, north of Banagher, where it joins the Shannon.
The river Brosna is popular for fly fishing and has stocks of brown trout as well as some salmon and grilse. However it has, in recent years, suffered somewhat from pollution problems due to its poor assimilative capacity and the discharge of untreated sewage in the Mullingar area during storm conditions. There have also been discharges of pollutants, whether accidental or otherwise, such as one filmed at the bridge of Clonmore industrial estate in Mullingar.

River Bush
The River Bush (from the Irish: an Bhuais) is a river in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The river's source is in the Antrim Hills at 480m. From there the river flows northwest, with a bend at the town of Armoy. It then flows west, passing through Stranocum, and then bends north, passing through Bushmills before reaching the sea at Portballintrae on the North Antrim coast. It flows through a fertile valley devoted to grassland-based agriculture with limited arable cropping. The underlying geology is basalt and the water is slightly alkaline with magnesium making an unusually large contribution to total hardness. The river supports indigenous stocks of Atlantic salmon and brown trout. A tributary of the river is the source of water used for distilling Bushmills whiskey.
The River Bush has traditionally been a salmon-fishing river, though the numbers dwindled in the late 20th and early 21st century. The River Bush still offers excellent salmon fishing. It is managed as a premier salmon river by Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL), Inland Fisheries Division. The Department also operates a fish farm and hatchery at the River Bush Salmon Station (which can be visited), providing assistance to the River Bush Salmon Research Project. This project was established in 1972 and is a long term programme of research investigating both the sea water and fresh water phases of the lifecycle of the Atlantic salmon. The research programme has led to the recognition of the River Bush as an index river by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

River Clare
The River Clare (Irish: Abhainn an Chláir) is a river in counties Mayo and Galway in Ireland.
The 93 kilometres (58 mi) long river rises north of Ballyhaunis in Mayo and descends past Dunmore, where it flows west, then turns south past Milltown, continuing down through Kilbennan Church near Tuam. It continues south until past Turloughmore, then turns sharply west, flowing north of Claregalway and, thence, further westward into Lough Corrib. From there it flows as the River Corrib into Galway Bay.
A large section of it is a former turlough (Irish: turlach), which, at 6.5 square kilometres, used to be Ireland's largest.
The Clare is the longest river in the Lough Corrib catchment. It has since the 1960's being subject to ongoing arterial drainage to lower the bed of the river and mitigate flooding. This has resulted in the river being straightened and canalized between ramparts of dredge material making access to the river difficult and comprising its value as a public amenity. It is an important spawning channel for salmon and trout and a noted fishery in its own right for both species.

River Corrib
The River Corrib (Irish -Abhainn na Gaillimhe) in the west of Ireland flows from Lough Corrib through Galway to Galway Bay. The river is among the shortest in Europe, with only a length of six kilometres from the lough to the Atlantic. It is popular with local whitewater kayakers and is the training ground of NUI, Galway Kayak club, as well as several rowing clubs. The depth of this river reaches up to 94 feet.
The translation of the Irish name of the river is Galway river i.e. from Gaillimh. In Irish it is sometimes called An Ghaillimh ("the Galway") and also incorrectly called Abhainn na Coiribe. The legend concerning its naming states that it was called after Gaillimh inion Breasail, the daughter of a Fir Bolg chieftain who drowned in the river. The word Gaillimh is believed to mean "stony" as in "stony river". The commonly held myth that the city takes its name from the Irish word Gallaibh, "foreigners" i.e. "the town of the foreigners" (from Gall, a foreigner) is incorrect as the name Gaillimh was applied to the river first and then later onto the town. Indeed, the earliest settlement at Galway was called Dún Bhun na Gaillimhe, or "the town at the end of the Galway (river)".

River Dargle
The River Dargle (Irish: An Deargail, meaning "little red spot", so called with reference to the prevailing tint of its rocks) rises in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland on the northern slopes of Djouce Mountain and flows over the highest waterfall in Ireland, falling 121m (398 feet) at Powerscourt Waterfall. It then flows through the Glencree Valley where it is fed by the River Glencree before flowing east for a further 14 km (8.7 mi) to reach the Irish Sea at Bray Harbour.
The song Waxies' Dargle commemorates the annual outing of Dublin candle-makers ("waxies") to this spot.
Sir Walter Scott visited the area in 1825 and mistakenly assumed that Dargle was the name for any glen, etc. He used the word in his novel Redgauntlet seven years later: Glen, nor dargle, nor mountain, nor cave, could hide the puir hill-folk.

River Dodder
The River Dodder (Irish: An Dothra) is one of the three main rivers of the Dublin region in Ireland, the others being the Liffey, of which the Dodder is the largest tributary, and the Tolka.
The Dodder rises on the northern slopes of Kippure in the Wicklow Mountains, and is formed from several streams. The headwaters flow from Kippure Ridge, and include, and are often mapped solely as, Tromanallison (Allison's Brook), which is then joined by Mareen's Brook, including the Cataract of the Brown Rowan, and then the combined flow meeting the Cot and Slade Brooks.
In the river's valley at Glenasmole are the two Bohernabreena Reservoirs, a major part of the Dublin water supply system.
The Dodder is 26 kilometres (16 mi) long. It passes the Dublin suburbs of Tallaght and then Firhouse, travels through Rathfarnham, Templeogue, Rathgar, Milltown, Clonskeagh, Donnybrook, and Ballsbridge, and enters the Liffey near Ringsend, along with the Grand Canal, at Grand Canal Dock.
There is a weir just above the bridge at Ballsbridge and the river becomes tidal roughly where the bridge at Lansdowne Road crosses it.

River Erne
The River Erne (Irish: Abhainn na hÉirne or An Éirne), in the northwest of Ireland, rises in Beaghy Lough, two miles south of Stradone in County Cavan and flows 64 miles through Lough Gowna, Lough Oughter and Upper and Lower Lough Erne, County Fermanagh, to the sea at Ballyshannon, County Donegal. For 30 miles from Crossdoney in County Cavan to Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, it is difficult to distinguish the river as it winds its way through interconnected loughs or parts of loughs nestling among the drumlin hills of Cavan and south Fermanagh. The river is 120 kilometres long and is very popular for fly fishing for trout and salmon, with a number of fisheries along both the river itself and its tributaries. The town of Enniskillen is mostly situated on an island in the river, between Upper and Lower Lough Erne. It is linked to the River Shannon by the Shannon-Erne Waterway.
The river takes its name from a mythical princess named Éirne.
The building of hydroelectric power stations at Cliff (near Belleek) and Ballyshannon (work began in 1945 and the first power station was commissioned in 1950) caused famous salmon beats to be flooded and the run of salmon into the Erne has now declined to such a tiny trickle as to be of little angling value except for the few fish that are occasionally caught below Cliff when the power station is generating. Roach first appeared in the river in 1963 and there was a massive increase in the roach population in 1968. This increase could well have had an adverse effect on trout stocks, which went into decline at that time. Water pollution became a major problem in the 1970s and up to 1987. Since 1987 the pollution problem has been well controlled, the roach population has declined dramatically and trout stocks have made a welcome return and provide good angling once more, both on the Erne itself and its tributaries.

River Eske
The River Eske (Irish: Abhainn na hIascaigh) (also Eask) is a river in the northwest of Ireland, beginning at Lough Eske in southeast County Donegal before flowing mainly westwards to the town of Donegal and into the Atlantic via Donegal Bay.
The river itself is only 5 kilometers and Donegal Town is the only major settlement through which it flows. Despite its size, the river is well known for fishing, especially for spring salmon, sea trout and char, with the season running from 1 March to 31 September.
The river flows in the Bluestack Mountains which are to the north of Donegal Town. In the town, it passes several tourist attractions, one of which is Donegal Castle, the former seat of the O'Donnell Clan, the ancient rulers of the Lordship of Tyrconnell (roughly similar to modern day County Donegal without the Inishowen Peninsula). The mouth of the river is directly opposite a former Franciscan Abbey which was built by the O'Donnells but was destroyed by the English following the Flight of the Earls in 1607.

River Fergus
The River Fergus (Irish: An Forghas) is a river in County Clare, Ireland. It rises in Loughnagowan which lies a few kilometers west of Corofin and flows into the Shannon Estuary. It is noted for its trout and salmon fishing. Trummer is an island in the river. There are six bridges crossing it in Ennis alone.
Settlements along the river include Corofin, Ennis, Clarecastle and Newmarket-on-Fergus.

River Ferta
The River Ferta (seen in some old maps as the Valentia River) is a river in County Kerry in Ireland. It flows from the southwestern Macgillicuddy Reeks above Teeromoyle and travels ten miles before flowing into Valentia Harbour. The principal town in the region, Cahersiveen, is located close to the mouth of the river.
There are two crossings at Cahersiveen: an old railway bridge and a single carriageway used by cars. The town also has an artificial marina built in the early 2000s. A crossing over a tributary of the Ferta called the Cahran River was opened in 1992 in the same place that a previous crossing stood at Cahran Road.

River Inny
The River Inny is a river in Ireland. It flows from Lough Kinale under the Bridge of Finea into Lough Sheelin in County Cavan and heads south to Lough Derravaragh. From there is flows westwards to the River Shannon, which it joins at Lough Ree.
It is not to be confused with the River Inny that flows in the Iveragh Peninsula, County Kerry.

River Mahon
The River Mahon (Irish: an Mhachan) flows from the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford, Ireland.
Falling down the 80-metre Mahon Falls and proceeding past the "Fairy Bush", the river then passes through the village of Mahon Bridge and on past Flahavan's Mill and under the 8-arched rail bridge in Kilmacthomas. In former times, the river powered five different mills, one at Mahon Bridge, three at Kilmacthomas and one at Ballylaneen. The river is joined by the Ách Mór tributary river at Ballylaneen and ends its journey three miles further downstream at Bunmahon on Ireland's south coast. It drains into the region of the Atlantic Ocean known as the Celtic Sea.
The river is popular with whitewater kayakers. There has been no known source-to-sea descent to date but the river has been paddled from Kilmacthomas to the sea at Bonmahon by two local kayakers in April 2008.

River Maigue
The River Maigue, (Irish: An Mháigh, meaning "river of the plain") rises in the Milford area of North County Cork, Ireland.
It is joined by the small River Glen and the larger River Loobagh in south County Limerick. It then flows north through Bruree, after which it augmented by the River Morning Star. It flows through Croom and Adare before entering the Shannon Estuary (Irish: An tSionainn) just north of Ferry Bridge (Between] Kildimo and Clarina, County Limerick, just west of Limerick City. The River Maigue is tidal up to Adare on the N21 Road Bridge.
In ancient times the Maigue was central to the territories of the O'Donovans and their predecessors in Uí Chairpre Áebda (Cairbre Eva). The majority of its towns and villages were once the sites of fortresses. Later these territories were occupied by the FitzGerald dynasty.
The Loobagh (Irish: An Lúbach, meaning "The Twisted One") is a river with healthy Trout and Salmon populations. It rises in the hills south of Kilfinane and flows through Kilmallock. It joins the Maigue south of Bruree.

River Moy
The River Moy (Irish: An Mhuaidh) is a river in the northwest of Ireland.
The Moy rises at the foot of the Ox Mountains in County Sligo. It flows for 110 km. For the greater part of its length, it flows southwestward, entering County Mayo and passing near Swinford before turning north near the village of Kilmore and heading for the town of Ballina, where it enters the Atlantic Ocean at Killala Bay. The Moy Estuary is five miles long beginning at Ballina and running into Killala Bay.
The Moy valley, with its ancient churches and abbeys, is a prominent tourist destination.
The river was once among the best salmon fisheries in Europe; however, in recent times, drift net fishing off the coast caused a huge decline in salmon numbers. According to central fisheries board statistics, 101,231 returning salmon were taken by drift nets off the west coast of Ireland in 2005. In the same year, 29% (6,675) of all rod caught salmon in Ireland were taken in the Ballina district as a result of a weir which keeps salmon trapped in the ridge pool near the mouth of the river during the summer. Drift netting for salmon was banned in November 2006 and the ban came into force on 1 January 2007.

River Nore
The River Nore (Irish: An Fheoir) is a 140-kilometre (87 mi) long river located in south-east of Ireland. Along with the River Suir and River Barrow, it is one of the constituent rivers of the group known as the Three Sisters. The river drains approximately 977 square kilometres (377 sq mi) of Leinster. The river rises in the Devil's Bit Mountain, North Tipperary. Flowing generally southeast, and then south, before emptying into the Celtic Sea at Waterford Harbour, Waterford.
Parts of the river are listed as Special Areas of Conservation.
The Nore rises on the eastern slopes of the Devil's Bit Mountain in the townland of Borrisnoe, North Tipperary. It then flows south-eastwards to County Laois and County Kilkenny before joining the River Barrow just north of New Ross near the Barrow Bridge. The river passes near Durrow, County Laois then through Ballyragget, the city of Kilkenny and then the villages of Bennettsbridge and Thomastown. It flows through the Mount Juliet estate. Further south, it forms a picturesque V-shaped river valley, particularly notable near the village of Inistioge, the tidal limit. Major tributaries of the Nore include the Dinin, the Breagagh at Kilkenny City, the King's River, the Little Arrigle and the Black Water.

The River Poddle (Irish: An Poitéal), is one of the best known of the more than a hundred watercourses of Dublin. It is the source of the name "Dublin", the city being named after a pool that was once on its course. It rises in the Cookstown area in northern Tallaght, and flows into the River Liffey in the city centre.
The Poddle begins as the Tymon River in the Cookstown area northwest of Tallaght village, near the site of Fettercairn House, and flows east, through Tymon North, and northeast, forming the northern border of Templeogue, towards Greenhills. Additional ponds were added to its course when Tymon Park was formed in the 1980s and 1990s. The river flows from Greenhills into Kimmage, where it used to receive an artificial stream from Templeogue. This stream consisted of water from the River Dodder extracted at Balrothery Weir.
The Poddle's modest volume was increased for over 700 years by the significant input of water diverted from the River Dodder at the great weir at Balrothery north of Firhouse, and carried by the three kilometre first section of the City Watercourse. The ancient watercourse was, without explanation, disrupted in recent times by development allowed by the County Council, and it no longer operates.

River Quoile

The Quoile (from Irish: An Caol meaning "the narrow") is a river in County Down, Northern Ireland.
The river begins its life as the Ballynahinch River which flows from west of the town of Ballynahinch to Annacloy where it is known as the Annacloy River. This then becomes the Quoile proper, which flows through Downpatrick and the Quoile Pondage before finally emptying into Strangford Lough.
In October 1991, during dredging operations in the river, a piece of oak, perhaps the remains of a log-boat, was found. Following dendrochronological dating it was found to have a Neolithic date of 2739 BC.
On the north bank of the river, 0.75 miles (1.2 km) north-west of Downpatrick, the Inch Abbey site was originally on an island (Irish: Inis) in the Quoile Marshes. The pre-Norman Celtic monastic settlement here, known as Inis Cumhscraigh (or Inis Cuscraidh), was in existence by the year 800. In 1002 it was plundered by the Vikings led by Sitric, King of the Danes, who came up the Quoile with a fleet from the sea. The Vikings plundered the settlement again in 1149. The Cistercian Inch Abbey monastery, founded by John de Courcy in 1180, is located near to the river in the southern area of the Early Christian earthwork enclosure.

River Robe
The River Robe (Irish: Abhainn an Róba) is a river in County Mayo, Ireland. It rises near Ballyhaunis, then flows generally west for 64 kilometres (40 mi), where it drains into Lough Mask.
The river is the longest tributary of Lough Mask and it drains 320 square kilometres of south Mayo. The Robe's Environmental Protection Agency River ID is 30_1579.
The Robe rises west of Ballyhaunis and follows a meandering path, southwest, through the townland of Keebagh, and Brickens village. It turns gently to the west between Tootagh and Garryduff and continues west between Claremorris and Ballindine. It meanders in serpentine coils beside the R331 road, passing Taugheen, from where it begins its southwesterly descent to Hollymount. From there, the river winds in broad loops before descending southwestwards into Ballinrobe (Irish: Baile an Róba, meaning "town of the Robe"). The Robe empties into Lough Mask, four kilometres west of Ballinrobe, near Cushlough (Irish: Cois Loch, meaning "beside the lake").

River Roe
The River Roe (Irish: Abhainn na Ró) flows north from Glenshane in the Sperrin Mountains to Lough Foyle, via the settlements of Dungiven, Burnfoot, Limavady and Myroe. The river is contained within County Londonderry in Northern Ireland.
The origin of the name 'Roe' is unclear. Suggestions include a Viking origin in the 8th/9th century, and the Irish 'rua', meaning 'red', ie the Red River.
The Irish government's placenames database, held by Dublin City University, identifies the Irish version of the name as Abhainn na Ró. This roughly translates into English as "The River of Rowing", possibly due to common passage by oar-powered boat craft in earlier times.
The Roe Basin (or Roe Valley) is a wide, glacial valley. The river flows most of the way to Limavady through an open, grassy, pastoral farmland landscape before narrowing through a metamorphic rock gorge within the Roe Valley Country Park. Beyond Limavady the river widens and meanders to an estuary feeding into Lough Foyle at Myroe Levels. Due to the wide, open nature of the upper reaches of the Roe, heavy rainfall can result in large surges of water. Many lower lying fields have earth defences to prevent flooding when the river rises above its natural banks. The estuary is a feeding ground of many birds and nesting area for Lapwing.

River Slaney
The Slaney (Irish: Abhainn na Sláine, meaning "river of health") is a river in the southeast of Ireland. It rises on Lugnaquilla Mountain in the western Wicklow Mountains and flows west and then south through counties Wicklow, Carlow and Wexford, before entering St George's Channel in the Irish Sea at Wexford town. The estuary of the Slaney is wide and shallow and is known as Wexford Harbour.
Towns on the Slaney include Stratford-on-Slaney, Baltinglass, Tullow, Bunclody, Enniscorthy and Wexford. During the river's 117 kilometer course, it is crossed by 32 road bridges and one railway bridge.
Varied and plentiful wildlife can be found in the environs of the river. In Wicklow, herds of deer can be seen, as well as swans, dippers, wild ducks, herons and kingfishers. At dusk, bats, owls and otters may be seen, while the mudflats of the estuary are favoured by black-headed gulls, redshanks and oystercatchers. The rare Goosander can be seen on the Slaney at Kildavin. In season, salmon and trout are fished.

River Swilly
The River Swilly (Irish: An tSúileach) is a river in the Republic of Ireland, which flows in an eastern direction through Letterkenny, County Donegal. Letterkenny, the largest town in County Donegal, is built on the river and became the first crossing point on the river in the 17th century.
The river takes its name Súileach from a man-eating water monster that was chopped in half by Saint Columba, who was born in Gartan. Letterkenny DJ and Producer Diarmuid O'Doherty produced a song, A Monster in the River Swilly, about this legend.
The River Swilly rises near Glendore, a mountain in County Donegal, and flows for around 41.8 km (26.0 mi) through Letterkenny before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean at Lough Swilly.
The river is nearly 26 miles (42 km) long. A shipping industry once operated on the Swilly in Letterkenny. The river was extremely hard for larger ships to navigate, as it was narrow and has many bends near Letterkenny. The port was closed to commercial shipping in the 1960s and its warehouses were demolished in 2001. The coal yard still remains on the old site opposite the Mount Errigal Hotel. Newmills Corn and Flax Mills is powered by the waters of the river.

Robertstown
Robertstown is a small village situated on the banks of the Grand Canal in County Kildare, Ireland. It grew in importance on the arrival of the canal, at the highest level, 85 metres (279 ft) above sea level, of which it lies, in 1784.
In 1801 the Grand Canal Hotel was opened to cater for the passenger traffic along the canal and an extension was added in 1804. For a time business was good,with the canal carrying 100,000 passengers per year, but revenues began to fall and gradually the 72 windows and 62 hearths were closed up to avoid paying tax. It ceased being a hotel in 1849, was used as a barracks for the Irish Constabulary between 1869 and 1905 and has recently been used as a community centre.
More recent developments include a set of canal-side cottages, and Lowtown Marina, with boats for sale and other services.
In the 2002 Census, Robertstown had a population of 375. It had grown by a massive 65.6% to 621 by 2006.
Robertstown GAA is based in Brockagh Park in Robertstown.

Royal Canal
The Royal Canal (Irish: An Chanáil Ríoga) is a canal originally built for freight and passenger transportation from the River Liffey at Dublin to the River Shannon at Cloondara in County Longford in Ireland. It fell into disrepair, but has since been restored for navigation. The full length of the canal was re-opened on 1 October 2010.
Work commenced in 1790 and lasted 27 years before finally reaching the Shannon in 1817, at a total cost of £1,421,954 [1]. The canal passes through Maynooth, Kilcock, Enfield, Mullingar and Ballymahon has a spur to Longford. The total length of the main navigation is 145 kilometres (90 mi), and the system has 46 locks. There is one main feeder (from Lough Owel), which enters the canal at Mullingar.
At the Dublin end, the canal reaches the Liffey through a wide sequence of dock and locks at Spencer Dock, with a final sea lock to manage access to the river and sea.
In 1843, while walking with his wife along the Royal Canal, Sir William Rowan Hamilton realised the formula for quaternions and carved his initial thoughts into a stone on the Brougham Bridge over the canal.

Sallins
Sallins (Irish: Na Solláin) is a suburban town in County Kildare, Ireland, situated 3.5 km north of the town centre of Naas, from which it is separated by the M7 motorway. Sallins is the anglicised name of Na Solláin which means "The Willows".
According to the official CSO Census of 2006, the electoral division of Sallins has a total population of 3,806. The village has expanded rapidly in recent years and since the 2002 census, the population has grown by 30.3pc. It is the 10th largest settlement in Kildare and the 91st largest in Ireland.
Sallins grew as a result of its position on both the Grand Canal and the Dublin to Cork railway line. Historically, the major employers in the village were Odlum's Flour Mills and a meat factory, although the latter is now closed.
Theobald Wolfe Tone is buried near Sallins village in Bodenstown graveyard. Each summer, Irish Republicans of various political and paramilitary groupings congregate at Sallins to hold commemorations at Tone's grave.
The village's railway station serves both Sallins itself and neighbouring Naas, as reflected in its official name of "Sallins and Naas". Originally named just "Sallins", it opened on 4 August 1846 and was the junction for the Tullow branch, which included the original Naas station. It closed in 1963, and was renamed Sallins & Naas upon re-opening in 1994. as part of the Kildare "Arrow" commuter rail project.

Straffan
Straffan (variously Teach Srafáin, Strafáin or An Cluanini in Irish) is a village in County Kildare, Ireland, situated on the banks of the River Liffey, 25 km upstream of the Irish capital Dublin.
With a population, according to the census of 2006, of 439 – an increase since 2002 of 32.2% – Straffan is the 31st most populous centre in County Kildare. The population of Straffan's historical parish (later electoral district) increased by 11pc to 1,449 having declined to 518 in 1936 (see historical populations below).
Straffan is also an electoral division within Celbridge Number 1 Rural Area with a population of 1,449 for the division. At one time a separate parish, it is today joined to the parishes of Celbridge (in the Roman Catholic structure) and Celbridge and Newcastle (Church of Ireland), in the respective Dublin dioceses.
Straffan is home to the Kildare Country Club, commonly known as the K Club, and its two championship golf courses, which have staged major international events such as the European Open (annually since 1995), and the Ryder Cup tournament between Europe and the USA in 2006.

Timolin
Timolin (Irish: Tigh Mo Linne, meaning "Moling's house") is a village in the south of County Kildare, Ireland. It is on the former N9 road (now by-passed) about 80 km (50 mi) south of Dublin. It is a small village, with less than a hundred inhabitants, one shop and a two pubs. It is located close to the Moone High Cross Inn.
During the Irish Confederate Wars of the 1640s Timolin was the scene of a notorious massacre. A stronghouse in the village, in which many civilians were sheltering, was attacked by an army under Ormonde. After it had been captured around 200 civilians were killed.
The closest village to Timolin is Moone, about 1 kilometre to the south. The current county plan provides for joint development of Moone and Timolin.

Waterford Harbour
Waterford Harbour (Irish: Loch Dá Chaoch / Cuan Phort Láirge) is a natural harbour at the mouth of the Three Sisters; the River Nore, the River Suir and the River Barrow in Ireland. It is navigable for shipping to both Waterford and New Ross. The Port of Waterford is capable of accommodating vessels up to 32,000 tons dwt. It separates County Waterford from County Wexford on the eastern side of the estuary.
Dunmore East is a fishing village and popular holiday resort situated on the west side of the harbour and is generally considered to be the western limit. The Barrow (Irish: An Bhearú) is a river in Ireland. It is one of The Three Sisters; the other two being the River Suir and the River Nore. The Barrow is the longest and most prominent of the three rivers. At 192 km (120 mi), it is the second longest river in Ireland, behind the River Shannon.
The source of the River Barrow is at Glenbarrow in the Slieve Bloom Mountains in County Laois.
Among the towns that the River Barrow passes through on its way to the sea in Waterford are Portarlington, Monasterevin, Carlow/Graiguecullen, Graiguenamanagh, and New Ross.
The river also forms a natural border between parts of counties Kilkenny and Carlow and Kilkenny and Wexford.
Barrow Navigation[link]
The River Barrow forms a major part of Ireland's inland waterways network, providing an inland link between the port of Waterford and the Grand Canal, which in turn connects Dublin to the River Shannon. There are three sections to the navigation:
- The tidal River Barrow, which together with the tidal reaches of its tributaries the River Suir and River Nore constitute 88km (55 miles) of tidal river navigation.
- The non-tidal river navigation featuring 23 locks, continuing 66km (41 miles) inland from the tidal limit of the Barrow at St. Mullins to Athy.
- The Barrow Line of the Grand Canal connects to the river at Athy and continues northwards a further 45km (28 miles) with 9 locks, connecting to the mainline of the Grand Canal at Lowtown.
