WHO, 커피 '발암 가능성' 물질서 25년만에 제외 The World Health Organization dropped coffee from its list of 'possible carcinogen'...after 25 years it said coffee could possibly lead to bladder cancer. Some studies even suggest that coffee could help prevent other forms of cancer. Lee Minyoung has this report. Good news for coffee lovers. The World Health Organization is removing coffee from its carcinogen list. The previous fragmentary WHO research conducted 25 years ago branded coffee as a possible culprit for bladder cancer. The organization is now reversing its course. It conceded that coffee has no carcinogenic effects related to other forms of cancer as well. This is based on a study conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer...where they reviewed over a thousand studies that suggested coffee does not carry any kind of carcinogenic substance. A group of scientists of the IARC concluded they were not able to find enough evidence to say there is any correlation between coffee drinking and cancer. Rather, some studies even suggest the opposite...saying that coffee has protective benefits in certain types of cancer. "There are many studies showing that drinking coffee could rather reduce risks of cancer in relation to the prostate gland, uterus and liver. Scientists assume that this is because coffee is full of phytochemicals, or plant-based biologically active compounds...especially 'polyphenol'...which has some antioxidant properties and reduces oxidative stress..." The expert added that drinking coffee could do more good than harm. "There are numerous studies that show that drinking 2 to 3 cups of coffee everyday could drop the risk of cardiovascular problems and diabetes, ... as well as some papers that suggest coffee drinkers have a lower mortality rate compared to non-drinkers." With the recent WHO report, it seems like coffee will continue to be popular aroudn the world. Global coffee consumption has been on a steady rise since 2011. In 2014 alone, over 1-hundred-50 million bags of coffee were consumed all around the world...according to data from the International Coffee Organization. Lee Minyoung, Arirang News.
