Jan van der Heyden (March 5, 1637, Gorinchem – September 12, 1712, Amsterdam) was a Dutch Baroque-era painter, draughtsman, printmaker, a mennonite and inventor who significantly contributed to contemporary firefighting. He improved the fire hose in 1672, with his brother Nicolaes, who was a hydraulic engineer. He modified the manual fire engines, reorganised the volunteer fire brigade (1685) and wrote and illustrated the first firefighting manual (''Brandspuiten-boek''). A comprehensive street lighting scheme for Amsterdam, which lasted from 1669 until 1840, designed and implemented by Van der Heyden, was adopted as a model by many other towns and abroad.

Biography

Van der Heyden grew up in Gorcum, where he learned drawing from a glass painter. but the family moved to Amsterdam around 1650. They lived on Dam Square. As a young man he witnessed the fire in the old townhall which made a deep impression on him. He later would describe or draw 80 fires in almost any neighborhood of Amsterdam. When he married in 1661 the family was living on Herengracht, the most fashionable canal in Amsterdam. In 1668 Cosimo II de' Medici bought one of his paintings, a view of the townhall with a manipulated perspective. Van der Heyden often painted country estates, like Goudestein, owned by Joan Huydecoper II. He was not good in drawing figures and used for his paintings a metal plate for bricks, a sponge or moss for the leaves. Johannes Lingelbach, Adriaen van de Velde und Eglon van der Neer assisted him drawing the figures. Jan van der Heyden also introduced the lamp post and in 1672 impoved the design of the fire engine. He died in wealth as the superintendent of the lighting and director of the (voluntary) firemen's guild at Amsterdam.

Van der Heyden was a contemporary of the landscape painters Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael, with the advantage, which they lacked, of a certain professional versatility; for, whilst they painted admirable pictures and starved, he varied the practice of art with the study of mechanics. Until 1672 he painted in partnership with Adriaen van de Velde. After Adrian's death, and probably because of the loss which that event entailed upon him, he accepted the offices to which allusion has just been made. At no period of artistic activity had the system of division of labour been more fully or more constantly applied to art than it was in Holland towards the close of the 17th century.

Van der Heyden, who was perfect as an architectural draughtsman insofar as he painted the outside of buildings and thoroughly mastered linear perspective, seldom turned his hand to the delineation of anything but brick houses and churches in streets and squares, or rows along canals, or "moated granges," common in his native country.

He was a travelled man, had seen The Hague, Ghent and Brussels, and had ascended the Rhine past Xanten to Cologne, where he copied over and over again the tower and crane of the great cathedral. But he cared nothing for hill or vale, or stream or wood. He could reproduce the rows of bricks in a square of Dutch houses sparkling in the sun, or stunted trees and lines of dwellings varied by steeples, all in light or thrown into passing shadow by moving cloud.

He had the art of painting microscopically without loss of breadth or keeping. But he could draw neither man nor beast, nor ships nor carts; and this was his disadvantage. His good genius under these circumstances was Adrian van der Velde, who enlivened his compositions with spirited figures; and the joint labour of both is a delicate, minute, transparent work, radiant with glow and atmosphere.

Exhibitions

The Bruce Museum of Arts and Science in Greenwich, Connecticut, presented "Jan van der Heyden (1637–1712)", an exhibition of works by the artist, from September 16, 2006, through January 10, 2007. The exhibit consistsed of 37 of the artist’s cityscape paintings and 16 drawings with supplemental material on Van der Heyden’s publication on firefighting. The exhibition was the first monographic exhibition of van der Heyden’s art to be mounted in 70 years and the first shown ever in the United States, according to the museum. The exhibition had its only showing in the United States at the Bruce Museum, after which it traveled (in slightly abridged form) to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Faustin Linyekula (born February 27, 1974) is a Congolese dancer and choreographer of contemporary dance. His works are structured along the lines of the dance form Ndombolo and its associated music and address "the legacy of decades of war, terror, fear and the collapse of the economy for himself, his family and his friends."

Family background

Linyekula was born in Ubundu, Zaire, now Democratic Republic of Congo. He was raised in a "multilingual, multicultural" environment, in a Roman Catholic family. Because of the restrictive laws under the rule of Mobutu Sese Seko his Christian name, ''Faustin'', could not appear on any legal documents until the late 1990s.

Career

According to Toba Singer, Linyekula studied literature and theater in Kisangani (in northeast Zaire, his native region). The universities in Zaire were soon shut down; he went to Nairobi, Kenya. In 1997 co-founded the Gàara company with mime Opiyo Okach and dancer Afrah Tenambergen, the first contemporary dance company in Kenya and his first experience as a choreographer. He then traveled to France where he took up a residency first with choreographer Régine Chopinot and then with Mathilde Monnier, and to the Tanzwochen Festival in Vienna, Austria where he and South African dancer Gregory Maqoma created ''Tales off the Mud Wall'' (2000).

Returning to the Congo, in June 2001 in Kinshasa he established the Studios Kabako, a structure form multidisciplinary creation and performance; Brenda Dixon Gottschild, professor emerita of Dance Studies at Temple University characterizes this as choosing "the path of most resistance," given his opportunities in Europe.

In 2003, he choreographed a piece for six hip-hop dancers as part of the Suresnes Cités Danse Festival. The French Centre National de la Danse gave him ''carte blanche'' to create a festival in 2005; the result was ''Le Cargo'', in which appear ten African companies mostly presenting their work for the first time in Europe. In 2007, his ''Festival des mensonges'' ("Festival of Lies") was presented at the Festival d'Avignon, as well as ''Dinozord: The Dialogue Series'' (2006).

Faustin Linyekula is also teaching in Africa, Europe (Parts / Brussels, CNDC Angers / France, Impulstanz / Vienna, Laban Centre / London...) and in the United States and has been part of a think tank with other African artists and intellectuals around the creation of an arts center near Cape Town. The think tank resulted in the creation of the Africa Centre.

Since 2006, he is based in Kisangani. The Studios Kabako are accompanying there local artistic initiatives in the field of dance, theatre, music and video. In May 9 opened the first professional recording studio of the eastern part of the country. In August 010 started the ground breaking works of a laboratory / residency centre, 8 kilometers from city centre, under the supervision of German architect Baerbel Mueller.

He is the winner of the 2007 Principal Award of the Prince Claus Foundation.

Todd van der Heyden (born October 16, 1973 in Montreal) is a Canadian investigative television reporter and news anchor with CTV News in Montreal, Quebec.

Education

Van der Heyden earned a Bachelor's degree in journalism from Carleton University in Ottawa. In 2004, he received a graduate diploma in communication studies from Concordia University in Montreal.

Career

From 1997 to 2000, Van der Heyden worked as a volunteer at Vidéotron's cable access channel Canal Vox, as well as freelanced at CBC Radio in Montreal and the ''Toronto Star'' newspaper. Starting in 2000, he worked as news reporter at CFCF. In February 2005, Todd became the co-anchor of the 6pm weekend newscast and later the noon weekday newscast. In July 2008, he also became co-anchor of 6 o'clock newscast.

Recognition

Todd has won three RTNDA awards (Radio and Television News Directors Association) and one CAB award.

Jan-Arie van der Heijden (born 3 March 1988 in Schoonhoven) is a Dutch footballer who currently plays for SBV Vitesse in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Club career

Van der Heijden is a talented midfielder, who made his debut for Ajax in the league match Ajax – Roda JC on 4 November 2007 (4–2). Prior to playing for Ajax, he played for V.V. Schoonhoven. He has also attained a Bachelors degree in Sports and Economics. Although the player has only played two league games for Ajax he did play a full match against VfB Stuttgart and made a substitutes appearance against Italian champions F.C. Internazionale Milano. On his 20th birthday, March 3, 2008, the player signed an improved contract that binds him to Ajax until 2013.

In the 2008–09 season under manager Marco van Basten, Van der Heijden was injured until March 2009 due to a double knee-injury. During the season he had a number of unfortunate setbacks that prolonged his recovery period. At the end of March he was about to resume full training with Young Ajax, and he played a number of full matches with the reserve squad. On May 10, 2009, the last day of the Eredivisie season, Van der Heijden was on the bench as Ajax played against FC Twente, although he did not come onto the pitch.

For the 2009–10 season, new manager Martin Jol came in and Van der Heijden was sent out on loan to gain experience in the Eredivisie. On August 31, he joined Willem II Tilburg on loan until June 30, 2010. At Willem II he has become a first team regular as a controlling midfielder or as a libero. He made his first goal in competitive football for the Tilburg side in a 2–1 home victory against VVV-Venlo. He kicked a great free kick in the top corner leaving the goalkeeper without any chance. In January 2010, Ajax team mate Mitchell Donald joined Van der Heijden on loan from Ajax at the Tilburg club, His playing style has been compared to A.C. Milan star Clarence Seedorf.

International career

Van der Heijden also participated in the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship, where the Netherlands reached the semi finals, but they were beaten by the later winners Mexico. He was called up for the 2008 Toulon Tournament. On 13 October 2009, he made his U-21 debut in a 2011 European Championship qualifier.
