Labour Government is dismantling the Royal Mail

Rob White, Green Party Parliamentary candidate for the Reading East constituency, today promised to "lobby at every level" in order to support striking postal workers and accused the Government of effectively "dismantling" Royal Mail with its ongoing programme of privatisation.

In a strongly worded letter to the Communication Workers Union Rob White accused the Government of "ill serving " workers and the UK public.

Euro MP welcomes Heathrow decision

Commenting on BAA’s decision to halt plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport, Dr Caroline Lucas MEP said:

"So BAA has finally come to its senses and scrapped plans to build a third runway at Heathrow. This is fantastic news for local people and environmental campaigners, who have mounted an outstanding opposition to this reckless and misguided project. It has long been clear that expansion at Heathrow would be both environmentally and economically unsustainable – and this message finally seems to have got through.

Greens back plumber's boiler scrappage scheme

The Greens in Reading are joining plumbers to call for a government scrappage scheme for household boilers.

Pledging to back a Downing Street petition calling for incentives to scrap old boilers in favour of newer, more efficient models, local Greens have put their weight behind an unlikely business ally: Mick Williams, a plumbers’ merchant based in Hampshire.

Rob White, Green candidate for Reading East said:

Success for Green's campaign for libraries to loan out energy smart meters

Following on from a campaign led by local Green Rob White, the council has acquired some energy smart meters and people can now loan them out from the central library or their local branch.

Letter -- no to National Front

Dear Editor,

The fascist ‘National Front’ has announced plans to protest against the annual Reading Pride event on the 5th September. Reading Pride is a parade and festival celebrating the rich diversity of Reading and the achievements of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) people within our community.

Radioactive contamination incident at AWE Aldermaston

Reading Green Party has slammed directors of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at Aldermaston following the company's failure to disclose to the public details of a radioactive contamination event that happened on the site in June.

Letter -- cutting care

Dear Editor,

I note the debate on cutting care in your letters pages. Some of your correspondents quite rightly attack the Tories in Wokingham and West Berkshire for cutting care to people with moderate and substantial needs -- leaving 2800 people in Reading worried should the Tories take control of Reading Council. But taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, surely Gordon Brown and the Labour Government should also shoulder some of this blame for not providing councils with sufficient resources to meet the needs of local people -- as while Reading does currently care for people with moderate, substantial and critical needs its finances are creaking at the seams.

Letter -- ignore climate change at your peril

Dear Editor

What Keith Knight of the UK Independence Party (letters 19th August) says on the subject of biofuels makes a lot of sense: growing crops to make biofuels is unethical since it takes land out of food production, and we should oppose the EU’s imposition of targets for biofuel production. However, when it comes to climate change, he displays a worrying disregard of the issues facing all of us.

Letter -- A Two Horse Race?

Following Martin Salter deciding not to stand, the LibDem PPC has now also given up. I always thought it was odd he was selected; he lives, works and campaigns in Oxford. Maybe they will get someone more local next time, who will do something in Reading; they do have Cllrs in the constituency after all. His claim that the LD are a real choice is a false one though, the LibDems are far too similar to the Tories.

Letter -- proper public funding for healthcare provision

Dear Editor

I am writing with regard to the new Health Centre at Shinfield. Shinfield badly needed more GP coverage, with all the new and proposed development. But the way it has been financed – PFI (Private Finance Initiative) – has serious drawbacks for the people of Shinfield:
