Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

Clifford Odets (July 18, 1906 – August 14, 1963) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and director.
Odets was born in Philadelphia to Louis Odets (born Gorodetsky) and Pearl Geisinger, Russian- and Romanian-Jewish immigrants, and raised in Philadelphia and the Bronx, New York. He dropped out of high school after two years to become an actor. In 1931, he became a founding member of the Group Theatre, a highly influential New York theatre company that utilized an acting technique new to the United States. This technique was based on the system devised by the Russian actor and director Constantin Stanislavski. It was further developed by Group Theatre director Lee Strasberg and became known as The Method. Odets eventually became the Group's primary playwright.
Odets pursued acting with great passion and ingenuity. At the age of 19 he struck out on his own, billing himself as ″The Rover Reciter.″ Under this moniker he procured bookings as a radio elocutionist. He moved away from his parents, to Greenwich Village, where he acted with the Poet's Theatre under the direction of Village legend Harry Kemp. Odets claimed to have become America's first real disc jockey at about this time, at radio station WBNY, as well as a drama critic. In this capacity he saw the 1926 Broadway production of Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. O'Casey's work would prove to be a powerful influence on Odets.

RICHARD is currently performing at The Odyssey Theater in Los Angeles in a gritty, passionate, funny and heartbreaking performance of "Awake and Sing!" by Clifford Odets. The play masterfully captures the hopes and struggles of a lower-middle-class, three-generation Jewish family living in a Bronx apartment during the Great Depression.

In this episode Charley speaks more about the directing process and how "Awake and Sing!" has been coming together over the last two weeks. We also have a small musical selection from songs that are being used during the show. Titles include: The Cantor by Al Jolson, Charley, My Boy by Billy Murray, Oh By Jingo, by The Rhythm Aces and The Peanut Vendor by Sam Browne and the Three Ginx.
