The title cut of the new release "Root of Things" by the Matthew Shipp Trio, performed live at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY on March 15, 2014.
The concert marked the CD release of "Root of Things" as well as the inauguration of a concert grand piano recently donated by Kathy Bodily of the Inter Media Arts Center in Long Island.
"Root of Things" is the third recording by pianist Matthew Shipp's working trio with bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Whit Dickey, following "Elastic Aspects" (Thirsty Ear, 2012) and the group's live debut "The Art Of The Improviser" (Thirsty Ear, 2011).

Warszawy w ramach starań Warszawy o tytuł Europejskiej Stolicy Kultury 2016. Festiwal zadebiutował w 2010 roku i stał się wydarzeniem cyklicznym.
W programie festiwalu znajdują się koncerty i imprezy klubowe z udziałem artystów sceny warszawskiej oraz gwiazd polskich i zagranicznych. W części wydarzeń można uczestniczyć bezpłatnie.

Matthew (ship)
The Matthew is a replica of a caravel sailed by John Cabot in 1497 from Bristol to North America, presumably Newfoundland. After a voyage which had got no further than Iceland, Cabot left again with only one vessel, the Matthew, a small ship (50 tons), but fast and able. The crew consisted of only 18 people. The Matthew departed either 2 May or 20 May 1497. He sailed to Dursey Head (latitude 51°36N), Ireland, from where he sailed due west, expecting to reach Asia. However, landfall was reached in North America on 24 June 1497. His precise landing-place is a matter of much controversy, with Cape Bonavista or St. John's in Newfoundland the most likely sites.
Cabot went ashore to take possession of the land, and explored the coast for some time, probably departing on 20 July. On the homeward voyage his sailors incorrectly thought they were going too far north, so Cabot sailed a more southerly course, reaching Brittany instead of England. On 6 August he arrived back in Bristol.

Matthew Shipp
Matthew Shipp (born December 7, 1960) is an American pianist, composer and bandleader.
Early life
Shipp was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and began playing piano at six years old. His mother was a friend of trumpeter Clifford Brown. He was strongly attracted to jazz, but also played in rock groups while in high school. Shipp attended the University of Delaware for one year, then the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with saxophonist/composer Joe Maneri. He has cited private lessons with Dennis Sandole (who also taught saxophonist John Coltrane) as being crucial to his development.
Later life and career
Shipp moved to New York in 1984, and has been very active since the early 1990s, appearing on dozens of albums as a leader, sideman or producer. Before making a living out of his music, he worked in a bookshop as assistant manager. He got fired, he threw some books at his boss, and he decided he wouldn't look for a day job anymore. He was initially most active in free jazz, but has since branched out, notably exploring music that touches on contemporary classical, hip hop and electronica. At the beginning of his career Shipp was stylistically compared to some of his predecessors in the jazz piano pantheon but has since been recognized as a complete stylistic innovator on the piano – with AllMusic referring to his "unique and recognizable style"; and Larry Blumenfeld in Jazziz Magazine referring to Shipp as "stunning in originality." Jazziz Magazine also referred to Shipp's CD 4D as "further proof of his idiosyncratic genius."

Bristol Harbour
Bristol Harbour is the harbour in the city of Bristol, England. The harbour covers an area of 70 acres (28.3 ha). It has existed since the 13th century but was developed into its current form in the early 19th century by installing lock gates on a tidal stretch of the River Avon in the centre of the city and providing a tidal by-pass for the river. It is often called the Floating Harbour as the water level remains constant and it is not affected by the state of the tide on the river.
Netham Lock in east Bristol is the upstream limit of the harbour. Beyond the lock is a junction: on one arm the navigable River Avon continues upstream to Bath, and on the other arm is the tidal River Avon. The first 1 mile (1.6 km) of the floating harbour, downstream from Netham Lock to Totterdown Basin, is an artificial canal known as the Feeder Canal, while the tidal River Avon follows its original route. Downstream of Totterdown Basin, the floating harbour occupies the former natural course of the River Avon, whilst the tidal River Avon flows through an artificial channel known as the New Cut. This separation of the floating harbour and the tidal River Avon allows boats in the harbour to remain floating at low tide, reduces currents and silting and prevents flooding.

Relocating Black Diamond a 39 foot Jeanneau sailboat from Freeport to Bimini, Bahamas then finally to Miami, trying to outrun Hurricane Matthew 2016. Includes boat prep on a mooring for a hurricane. UPDATE: Just got word this morning from the Marina yard in Freeport, we were to stay in. Where we had a hurricane plan, we would have been hauled out and strapped down to concrete. 20 boats that were hauled out and strapped, toppled over, 2 boats lost their mooring, 1 boat sank and thrown on the rocks, and part of the marina hotel roof was ripped off. I am saddened to hear the news for the good people of this hotel & marina. Sometimes sticking with the plan is not the best idea, if the plan sees the eye of a CAT 3-4 passing right through.

The captain did a great job of keeping us safe from the majority of the storm. On our last day we had to return to the Port of Miami which required us to sail right up behind Hurricane Matthew. We certainly felt the Hurricane or Tropical Storm Force Winds from time to time. I hope this video shows what a cruise ship sounds and feels like during rough conditions and that you are totally safe and that these noises are normal. The Matthew ship turning round after returning from a trip down the docks at the Bristol harbour festival 2017. Shown in the video are the ship's wake from the rotated propeller and the exhaust pipes on either side of the bow. The Pyronaut fire boat passes in front of the Matthew, and the Kaskelot tall ship is moored on the opposite bank by the music stage.

Out sailing Hurricane Matthew in a 39 foot sailboat!
Relocating Black Diamond a 39 foot Jeanneau sailboat from Freeport to Bimini, Bahamas then finally to Miami, trying to outrun Hurricane Matthew 2016. Includes boat prep on a mooring for a hurricane. UPDATE: Just got word this morning from the Marina yard in Freeport, we were to stay in. Where we had a hurricane plan, we would have been hauled out and strapped down to concrete. 20 boats that were hauled out and strapped, toppled over, 2 boats lost their mooring, 1 boat sank and thrown on the rocks, and part of the marina hotel roof was ripped off. I am saddened to hear the news for the good people of this hotel & marina. Sometimes sticking with the plan is not the best idea, if the plan sees the eye of a CAT 3-4 passing right through.

Relocating Black Diamond a 39 foot Jeanneau sailboat from Freeport to Bimini, Bahamas then finally to Miami, trying to outrun Hurricane Matthew 2016. Includes boat prep on a mooring for a hurricane. UPDATE: Just got word this morning from the Marina yard in Freeport, we were to stay in. Where we had a hurricane plan, we would have been hauled out and strapped down to concrete. 20 boats that were hauled out and strapped, toppled over, 2 boats lost their mooring, 1 boat sank and thrown on the rocks, and part of the marina hotel roof was ripped off. I am saddened to hear the news for the good people of this hotel & marina. Sometimes sticking with the plan is not the best idea, if the plan sees the eye of a CAT 3-4 passing right through.

An impromptu video filmed in HD but compressing and zooming compromised the quality - my apologies. Of course the message is clear, THE SHIP DOES NOT WAIT! I felt bad for them, especially for the little girls in tow but truly nearly 4,000 guests managed to be on the ship on time. I don't know what circumstances led them to miss the ship. When that happens, hopefully you have your passports so you can head to the airport; if not, your first stop, I suppose, is the embassy to get documents in order then go to the airport. At the airport they could have flown to our next destination (Grand Cayman - the following day), Jamaica where we'd be the day after Cayman or fly back to the home port of Galveston and wait on their luggage. On April 21st, 2012, Matt Rutherford, 31, sailed into his homeport of Annapolis, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay after completing a non-stop, 314 day 27,000 mile solo circumnavigation of North and South America - the first such solo voyage ever in a small sailboat. He made the voyage in a 27 foot sloop, St. Brendan, named after a 6th century explorer. The 1970, 42 year old, Swedish built Albin-Vega sailboat is a sturdy vessel, but not one designed for the rigors of the Northwest Passage and Cape Horn.
Rutherford had actually crossed his own start line at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel near Norfolk, Virginia. But he was determined not to step foot on land until he sailed up the Bay to his homeport of Annapolis.
Dozens of boats escorted Rutherford into the harbor where family, friends, and hundreds of spectators waited to greet him at the City Dock. After stepping off his vessel, Rutherford shared brief hugs with his Mom and Dad. He was then escorted to a reception ceremony hosted by sailing legend, Gary Jobson, and attended by the Governor of Maryland, the Mayor of Annapolis, and many other dignitaries.
After receiving numerous awards in recognition of his record-breaking voyage, Matt met with the press for an extend news conference.
Rutherford undertook the trip for personal accomplishment and in support of C.R.A.B., Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating - a nonprofit that provides the joy and challenge of sailing to individuals with disabilities. Matt's goal was to raise $250,000 for C.R.A.B: ten dollars for every mile of his record-setting circumnavigation of the Americas. With $80,000 raised to date and more pledges coming in following his successful return, Matt is committed to translating his personal triumph into financial support for C.R.A.B and disabled sailors.

An impromptu video filmed in HD but compressing and zooming compromised the quality - my apologies. Of course the message is clear, THE SHIP DOES NOT WAIT! I felt bad for them, especially for the little girls in tow but truly nearly 4,000 guests managed to be on the ship on time. I don't know what circumstances led them to miss the ship. When that happens, hopefully you have your passports so you can head to the airport; if not, your first stop, I suppose, is the embassy to get documents in order then go to the airport. At the airport they could have flown to our next destination (Grand Cayman - the following day), Jamaica where we'd be the day after Cayman or fly back to the home port of Galveston and wait on their luggage. No matter what it's costly but at least make sure you have your passport with you if you leave the ship. SIDE NOTE: If you're late because of an excursion you purchased through the cruise line they ARE supposed to wait on you. All that said, the trip was amazing and so was the Carnival Magic! Can't wait to do it again! I hope this video helps you plan to be back on the ship on time if you've got a cruise in your future... or what might happen if you show up late.

Out sailing Hurricane Matthew in a 39 foot sailboat!
Relocating Black Diamond a 39 foot Jeanneau sailboat from Freeport to Bimini, Bahamas then finally to Miami, trying to outrun Hurricane Matthew 2016. Includes boat prep on a mooring for a hurricane. UPDATE: Just got word this morning from the Marina yard in Freeport, we were to stay in. Where we had a hurricane plan, we would have been hauled out and strapped down to concrete. 20 boats that were hauled out and strapped, toppled over, 2 boats lost their mooring, 1 boat sank and thrown on the rocks, and part of the marina hotel roof was ripped off. I am saddened to hear the news for the good people of this hotel & marina. Sometimes sticking with the plan is not the best idea, if the plan sees the eye of a CAT 3-4 passing right through.

This video will show what its like to be on a cruise ship when the seas are a little rough. The captain did a great job of keeping us safe from the majority of the storm. On our last day we had to return to the Port of Miami which required us to sail right up behind Hurricane Matthew. We certainly felt the Hurricane or Tropical Storm Force Winds from time to time. I hope this video shows what a cruise ship sounds and feels like during rough conditions and that you are totally safe and that these noises are normal. Again Thanks to the team on board and all they did to keep us safe.

Relocating Black Diamond a 39 foot Jeanneau sailboat from Freeport to Bimini, Bahamas then finally to Miami, trying to outrun Hurricane Matthew 2016. Includes boat prep on a mooring for a hurricane. UPDATE: Just got word this morning from the Marina yard in Freeport, we were to stay in. Where we had a hurricane plan, we would have been hauled out and strapped down to concrete. 20 boats that were hauled out and strapped, toppled over, 2 boats lost their mooring, 1 boat sank and thrown on the rocks, and part of the marina hotel roof was ripped off. I am saddened to hear the news for the good people of this hotel & marina. Sometimes sticking with the plan is not the best idea, if the plan sees the eye of a CAT 3-4 passing right through.

In 1791 Mathew Flinders first sailed to the south-seas as a seventeen year old midshipman on a two year voyage with Captain William Bligh. Three years later he returned to Australia and in a tiny dingy named Tom Thumb explored much of Australia’s south east coast with his good friend lieutenant George Bass. Later, Flinders and Bass sailed in the Norfolk and discovered that Tasmania was a separate island from the mainland of Australia.
After returning to England Flinders was again sent in 1801 to complete the exploration of the entire Australian coast line in the Investigator. In April 1802 while charting the south coast where no ship had sailed before, he had a remarkable chance encounter with another explorer. Frenchman Nicholas Baudin had been sent by his government on exactly the same quest: to explore the remaining uncharted coast of the great southern land and find out if the west and east coasts, four thousand kilometres apart, were part of the same land.
And so began the race to complete the first complete map of Australia and to finish the exploration of the region started two hundred years before by the Dutch, the Portuguese, the Spanish and later the French and the English.
Flinders three year voyage featured great hardship, sickness, the death of crew, shipwreck and finally imprisonment. Flinders beat his French rivals in discovering and charting the remaining unknown coast but they beat him to publishing the first complete map of Australia.

They pistol whipped him with a gun then tied him to a fence in freezing conditions and set fire to him before leaving him to die.
The attack became a cause célèbre: it precipitated a national backlash against hyper-macho culture and tacit tolerance of homophobia. As a result of Matthew’s death, many good things have happened for the gay community.
