On a bicycle, the cogset or cluster is the set of multiple sprockets that attaches to the hub on the rear wheel. A cogset works with a rear derailleur to provide multiple gear ratios to the rider. Cogsets come in two varieties, freewheels or cassettes, of which cassettes are a newer development. Although cassettes and freewheels perform the same function and look almost the same when installed, they have important mechanical differences and are not interchangeable.
A freewheel (also known as a block) consists of either a single sprocket or a set of sprockets mounted on a body which contains an internal ratcheting mechanism and mounts on a threaded hub. Threaded rear hubs were available in different thread patterns depending on the country of manufacture, French and British threads being the most common. British C.E.I. (Cycle Engineers Institute) thread was adopted as the international standard and is now known as B.S.C. (British Standard Cycle). It is a standardized right-hand thread (1.375 x 24 TPI) onto which a standard freewheel is screwed. This allows different brands of freewheels to be mounted on different brands of hubs.

Having the right gear ratios on your bike will make a huge difference to your riding experience. Here's a quick guide to how they work. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Your gear ratios are defined by the size of your chainrings and the ratios offered by your cassette. Your tyre width also affects this to a certain extent, but by far the biggest influence us exerted by the chainrings and cassette. On a road bike you have two choices of chainset. Standard, which is commonly 53x39 and compact, commonly 50x34. Cassettes generally offer gears in the range of 11-25 or 11-28. In this video, Dan Lloyd explains how gear ratios are calculated and how you can use that knowledge to your benefit - don't forget to SHARE! Music: Archie Thompson - Gravedigger Jones: http:/...

This is a basic tutorial of how to change a rear cassette (i.e. rear cogs) on a road or mountain bike. Note: I didn't mention this in the video but you always want to replace your chain when you put on a new cassette. If you change your chain and some of your gears start skipping (you'll notice the first time your ride your bike after changing the chain) then your cassette is stretched and needs to be replaced.

We show you how to check your bicycle rear cassette for wear and when to replace cassette (also called a cogset, gear cluster, or freewheel). Check your cassette for wear whenever you do normal bike maintenance or repair. Remove and replace the cassette when you first notice wear. A worn cassette can increase chain wear and in turn result in wear to the intire drive train leading to poor shifting and poor overall bike performance. Indications of wear are similar whether you're working with SRAM, shimano, or cassettes from other manufacturers on a road bike cassette, mountain bike or trail bike. Remember, if desire to switch cassette to one with a larger cog to give you a lower gear for climbing, make sure your rear derailleur can handle the larger cogs. You may have to consider a long cag...
