L.A. Underground (covers)_RT's VOEB - 20 May 2016
This project along with the second “
Kinetic Guitars Project” are most definitely the toughest I had to deal with as a producer in recent years. All kind of unexpected turns and twists occurred in the early stages of this project. As much as I love playing frequently with the same collaborators, I also dig playing with new musicians every once in a while. So when the idea of covering this song came to me, it was clear in my mind that I wanted to work with jazz musicians.
I went on a recruiting mode, needing to find a solid drummer, keyboard player and a tight bass player. Menios was my only choice for the drum part
... a supremely talented musician who lives in
Greece. I was immediately struck by his skills. He also turned out to be a fine gentleman ! When I recruited the bass player, that's when the problems began. He seemed like a good candidate at first, but as the days, the weeks, the months went by, I realized that he was not interested at all... His response to my (updates) e-mail were like : “
Cool”, “
Good”, “
Okay”, "
Nice", "
Sure"... I told him once that he was pretty short with words. "Oh, I'm very busy... bla bla bla" was his response. He was not communicating at all and that started to pisse me off big time at a certain
point. I worked my ass off to make him feel welcome by making a couple of reference tracks so he could record his bass and all that. He just stopped answering my e-mails ! I sent him a couple of messages back to back, but he never replied to me again.
So I decided that I would record the bass track myself. I programmed it ! By that time I had recruited
James who was warmly recommended by another great lad Sam (SaGoBa)... I was very pleased with
Jim's attitude when he came into the project, but all the waiting and waiting and pushing and shoving to try to get through the bass player had begun to get to me and I started to lose interest in the project. Then Menios told me he would not be able to finish the project because he had professional engagements and was too busy... Fortunately, he had previously recorded his drums. That's the reason we only see photos of him in the video. I really wanted to regain my drive back to finish this project, so I had to put it away for a few months and that's what I did...
Even though it was a very difficult project to achieve, I'm really proud with the final outcome. As for the short introduction guitar piece "Guardian Angels", I used to play that one a lot when I was 20 years old... left it alone for a huge number of years before I decided to record it. It was obviously way too short to post it as a single piece project... So there you go !
I personally want to thank my friend James Wilkas for sticking with me throughout the whole process. Had it not been because I didn't want to deceive him any longer, this project would still be laying on the shelf.
Thanks for watching and listening ! Oh, and reading too !
