Maximum Rocknroll #397 • Jun 2016

mrr_397_cvr

It’s time for MRR #397, the June 2016 issue! On the cover: St. Louis’s the DUMPERS. You may know them as the backing band to the slippery and enigmatic LUMPY, but here the slime-punk reputation that precedes them takes a backseat to the real story. From their primordial origins to the Dumpers Rights movement, the only place to get the straight dump is in this exclusive interview. We’ve also got an interview with Steve Drewett of the NEWTOWN NEUROTICS, who last checked in with MRR nearly thirty years ago. Steve catches us up on lineup changes and new projects in the intervening decades, currents in the underground culture at large and his insights into everything from the band’s classic records to gigging in North Korea. Reporting from the Rust Belt, hardcore punk warriors CONCEALED BLADE give us the lowdown on the splendid isolation of the Pittsburgh scene, laying down the whole story starting from their explosive first gig. Out of the Midwest, Minneapolis’s KITTEN FOREVER dish on their new record of drum and bass anchored punk. There’s more: UROCHROMES, 2016’s hottest item out of New England, offer a peek into their maniac vision of US hardcore; Vienna’s calamitous post-punk group LIME CRUSH dish on their formation and their future. Reaching into the past, the VISITORS talk about the early post-punk scene in Edinburgh and beyond starting in the late ’70s; FRENOPATICSS discuss the recent reissue of their demo recordings, a small masterpiece of furtive hardcore wailing from teenage punks in early ’80s Barcelona. Plus: TINY KNIVES on their new record and carving their own space between punk, hardcore and metal in Portland. And straight out of Porto, Portugal come DOKUGA, hardcore from the oft-overlooked end of the Iberian peninsula. Topping it off is a scene report from Hattiesburg, MS, a town of less than 50,000 that’s quickly becoming one of the most exciting hot-spots of punk in the US. This issue also includes photo spreads from Sin Orden’s last show and Damaged City fest in Washington, DC. Of course we also got all your favorite columnists and hundreds of reviews of the latest records, tapes, books, and films to hit the streets.

May 26th, 2016 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
FLESH PRISON

Date & location formed:
New York, sometime in early 2014/mid 2015.

Flesh Prison (photo by Ally Varilias)

Flesh Prison (photo by Ally Varilias)

Reason for forming:
Started as a one-man bedroom project, then all of our other bands weren’t doing much so we decided to flesh the band out a little bit.

What are your lyrics about?
Self abuse, isolation, disembodiment, violence, etc.

How would you describe your sound?
Trash can black metal with mosh parts.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’re doing a weekend up to Boston in June, then preparing to put together our next release shortly after.

Band name:
ELIX-R

elix-r band photo

Date & location formed:
We formed around July 2015 in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We knew each other from and have all lived in Denton at one point so we just say we are from there. We live in Denton, Dallas, and Fort Worth currently.

Reason for forming:
We were all looking for new people to jam with and we were stoked to find four girls ready to commit to a serious working band. We needed an outlet from our own shit to have fun and make something.

What are your lyrics about?
Meg: My lyrics are either about camming or they’re nonsense because I’m either horny or high when I’m writing.

How would you describe your sound?
When ELIX-R first formed, we were all picking up our instruments with the intention of playing live shows for the first time so we didn’t really have the expectations of sounding like our favorite bands. Our sound still is hard for us to articulate for us. We didn’t really have the ability to rip off other bands since we were all figuring out our instruments and molding them to ourselves so we decided that our sound would be based off what we thought sounded cool, what we were actually able to play live and memorize as beginners and having a distinct original sound. We didn’t have a name until we had jammed for about 3 months. We couldn’t hear the vocals during practice so our first time really hearing Meg’s vocals was after we recorded our demo. It was great because we trusted each other enough to know that whatever we wrote, it was fun and it was going to sound sick regardless. We all listened to similar enough things and went to the same punk shows in DFW but out influences are still pretty different. Our sound is a true mix of the four of us.

What’s in the future for this band?
We are planning to release an EP this year and tour soon.

PUBLIC EYE

Date & location formed:
Summer ’15 in Portland, OR.

Reason for forming:
The four of us have been playing together in another band for over 10 years. We all agreed it was time to do something completely new but didn’t want to stop working together.

Reason for forming:
I just need to hear about gross things or I will die it’s a medical condition.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’re putting out a demo tape this summer. We will tour next winter and probably do a short west coast tour sooner.

The personal connection to modern culture and the disillusionment with the propagation of aesthetics value that lacks content.

A casual attempt to rip off our favorite 90’s noise rock and power punk bands.

Externs (photo by Sarah McKinney)

Band name:
POK GAI

We formed about a year ago in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. We worked on material during that time and played our first show in May 2016 at Bleak Life fest which two of our members organize.

Pok Gai (photo by Pok Gai)

Pok Gai (photo by Pok Gai)

Reason for forming:
We wanted to have a band that could be fun and sing about stupid punk stuff, but still have the ambition to be active and tour.

What are your lyrics about?
Our lyrics are about partying, pogo, looking punk, and how hipsters with rolled up toques are ruining punk.

How would you describe your sound?
Raw pogo.

What’s in the future for this band?
West Coast tour with WKSJ? in July 2016 and Brazil in winter 2017.

lithics logo

Band name:
LITHICS

Date & location formed:
December 2014 in Portland, Oregon

Reason for forming:
Palling around.

What are your lyrics about?
A bit of frozen choreography, one man growing out the other, a wet and flattering mirror, rusted shapes of wire, red dirt dust cloud, the Sahara fresh bread basin.

How would you describe your sound?
Interlocked bass and drum rhythms paired with shrill guitar counterpoint and stark female vocals.

What’s in the future for this band?
Repress of Borrowed Floors in production, west coast & east coast short tours, recording new full length.

Links and contact info:

lithics.bandcamp.com

barbed-wire-500x12

neg band logo

Band name:
N.E.G.

Date & location formed:
Philadelphia, March 2016.

Reason for forming:
I had a huge urge to put together a d-beat band after I got off tour with my last punk project, but didn’t want to be the average raw noise band or anything, so I focused on trying to fuse the mosh-centric riffs of Hoax with standard noisy d-beat stuff. I began assembling a crew of people which eventually evolved into the current lineup of N.E.G., but it took some time and numerous lineup changes.
-Kody

What are your lyrics about?
The lyrics are about frustration. Both frustration with myself and being a piece of shit, and frustration with the world around me and it being a piece of shit. They also try to convey some vague political ideals, like anti-war/anti-system kinds of things but that’s mostly ‘cause I can’t blame myself all the time.
-Matt

How would you describe your sound?
We take a lot of influence from newer bands, who basically just ripped off older bands. We really look at Hoax, Impalers, Absolut, and a bunch of others. Just like, slightly noisey, distorted, kinda fast d-beat, with some weird mosh parts to get people movin’ and freaked out guitar leads.

What’s in the future for this band?
We have tapes releasing on Cruel Noise Records from Pittsburgh, a potential 7″ release later this year, a tour in June, and a plan for a bigger tour later on. More riffing, more yelling… Things have been coming along extremely fast, it’s been a blessing.
