Puer aeternus is Latin for eternal boy, used in mythology to designate a child-god who is forever young; psychologically it refers to an older man whose emotional life has remained at an adolescent level. The puer typically leads a provisional life, due to the fear of being caught in a situation from which it might not be possible to escape. He covets independence and freedom, chafes at boundaries and limits, and tends to find any restriction intolerable.
The words, puer aeternus, come from Metamorphoses, an epic work by the Roman poet Ovid (43 BCE – c.17 CE) dealing with Greek and Roman myths. In the poem, Ovid addresses the child-god Iacchus as puer aeternus and praises him for his role in the Eleusinian mysteries. Iacchus is later identified with the gods Dionysus and Eros. The puer is a god of vegetation and resurrection, the god of divine youth, such as Tammuz, Attis and Adonis. The figure of a young god who is slain and resurrected also appears in Egyptian mythology as the story of Osiris.
Aeternus is a death metal band from Bergen, Norway.
Aeternus formed in 1993 as a trio, composed of Ares, Erik Vrolok, and Morrigan. They released their debut album, Beyond the Wandering Moon, in 1997 on Hammerheart Records (now Karmageddon Media), and toured that year with black metal bands Emperor and Limbonic Art. Their second album, ...And So the Night Became, was released in several different formats, and was accompanied by a tour supporting Deicide. In 1999, they added guitarist Radek, and their sound moved from black metal toward death metal for 1999's Shadows of Old. Morrigan left the group in 2001, and their first album as a three-piece again was Ascension of Terror. They then departed from Hammerheart and released "A Darker Monument" on the Nocturnal Art Productions label in 2003. The group toured Europe in 2006 to support the Hexaeon release. Vrolok was replaced by S. Winter on drums early in 2006, but as of September 2007, Winter is no longer in the group, and Terris has been named as a replacement.
