Filmed at the Royal Institution of Great Britain on 1st October 2014.
Is religion is to blame for most of the bloodshed throughout human history? Many would concur, but this is a view strongly countered by Karen Armstrong, one of the world’s leading thinkers on religion and spirituality. Armstrong is the former Catholic nun who abandoned her religious creed and has described herself as a ‘freelance monotheist’, while also taking inspiration from Buddhism. She has sold hundreds of thousands of books around the world and won huge audiences for her powerful oratory in which she challenges her listeners to reappraise their prejudices about religion. She has addressed the US Congress and Senate, and as a testament to her bridge-building abilities she has filled venues across the Muslim world, including Malaysia, Turkey, Jordan, Singapore, Egypt and Pakistan where up to 5000 have come out to hear her.
She has written over 16 books on faith and the major religions, studying what Islam, Judaism and Christianity have in common, and how our faiths have shaped world history and drive current events.
She came to the Intelligence Squared stage to talk about her forthcoming book 'Fields of Blood: Religion and the History of Violence'. Journeying from prehistoric times to the present, she contrasted medieval crusaders and modern-day jihadists with the pacifism of the Buddha and Jesus’ vision of a just and peaceful society. And she demonstrated that the underlying reasons – social, economic, political – for war and violence in our history have often had very little to do with religion. Instead, Armstrong celebrated the religious ideas and movements that have opposed war and aggression and promoted peace and reconciliation.

Simon Fraser University's Centre for Dialogue presents world-renowned author and 2008 TED Prize recipient Karen Armstrong for her feature lecture, "What is Religion?" and inaugural "State of the Charter for Compassion Address". The lecture and address took place on March 22, 2012. It was hosted by Simon Fraser University's Centre for Dialogue in partnership with the Charter for Compassion, TED Prize, and Greater Vancouver Compassion Network.
This event took place as part of 12 Days of Compassion, a Vancouver-wide conversation on compassion built around the SFU Jack P. Blaney Award for Dialogue. Armstrong's visit reached thousands of participants and generated 5500 person-hours in programming to discuss the role of compassion in the lives and communities of participants. The visit also resulted in the formation of 61 book clubs, where 600 members read and discussed Armstrong's book, Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life.
Armstrong is considered one of the world's most thought-provoking and original public thinkers on the role of religion in historical and contemporary life. Her poignant writing and captivating talks have sparked worldwide debate and respectful dialogue.
In 2008, Armstrong was awarded the TED Prize in support of her call for a council of religious and spiritual leaders to draw up a Charter for Compassion. That document is now endorsed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama, and has accumulated more than 85,000 supporters worldwide.

In the capstone lecture of Week Five, author and activist Karen Armstrong discusses the ways the West can better understand the volatile Pakistan -- namely, through compassion. Armstrong likened Chautauqua to the "pleasure park" that once housed the Buddha in an attempt to prevent him from seeing the suffering of the world. Just because the West is removed (by privilege, among other things) doesn't mean it can ignore the suffering of the world. The hubris of the West may cloud its sight toward the plight of countries like Pakistan, but the answer is compassion.

From the renowned and best-selling author of A History of God, a sweeping exploration of religion and the history of human violence.
For the first time, religious self-identification is on the decline in American. Some analysts have cited as cause a post-9/11perception: that faith in general is a source of aggression, intolerance, and divisiveness—something bad for society. But how accurate is that view? With deep learning and sympathetic understanding, Karen Armstrong sets out to discover the truth about religion and violence in each of the world’s great traditions, taking us on an astonishing journey from prehistoric times to the present.
While many historians have looked at violence in connection with particular religious manifestations (jihad in Islam or Christianity’s Crusades), Armstrong looks at each faith—not only Christianity and Islam, but also Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Daoism, and Judaism—in its totality over time. As she describes, each arose in an agrarian society with plenty powerful landowners brutalizing peasants while also warring among themselves over land, then the only real source of wealth. In this world, religion was not the discrete and personal matter it would become for us but rather something that permeated all aspects of society. And so it was that agrarian aggression, and the warrior ethos it begot, became bound up with observances of the sacred.
In each tradition, however, a counterbalance to the warrior code also developed. Around sages, prophets, and mystics there grew up communities protesting the injustice and bloodshed endemic to agrarian society, the violence to which religion had become heir. And so by the time the great confessional faiths came of age, all understood themselves as ultimately devoted to peace, equality, and reconciliation, whatever the acts of violence perpetrated in their name.
Industrialization and modernity have ushered in an epoch of spectacular and unexampled violence, although, as Armstrong explains, relatively little of it can be ascribed directly to religion. Nevertheless, she shows us how and in what measure religions, in their relative maturity, came to absorb modern belligerence—and what hope there might be for peace among believers of different creeds in our time.

Karen Armstrong, founder of the Charter for Compassion, discusses recent controversy over the planned building of a mosque and Islamic community center two blocks from the former site of the World Trade Center. She argues that it's important to "make room for the other," and concludes that the center could serve to "make peace at the site of tragedy."
-----
Karen Armstrong discusses "The Mystery of Compassion" in collaboration with the Chautauqua Institution's 2010 Summer Lecture Series. This program was recorded on August 20, 2010.
Karen Armstrong is a British author of numerous works on comparative religion, who first rose to prominence in 1993 with her highly successful A History of God. A former Catholic nun, she asserts that, "All the great traditions are saying the same thing in much the same way, despite their surface differences." They each have in common, she says, an emphasis on the transcendent importance of compassion, as epitomized in the so-called Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
Awarded the $100,000 TED Prize in February 2008, she called for drawing up a Charter for Compassion in the spirit of the Golden Rule, to identify shared moral priorities across religious traditions, in order to foster global understanding. It was unveiled in Washington, D.C. in November 2009. Signatories include Prince Hassan of Jordan, the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Sir Richard Branson. - Chautauqua Institution

In this historic event, Stephen Fry and other friends of Christopher Hitchens came together to celebrate the life and work of this great writer, iconoclast and debater. Fry was joined on stage at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall by Richard Dawkins and the two discussed Hitch's unflinching commitment to the truth. Hollywood actor Sean Penn was beamed in from LA by Google+ and, between cigarette puffs, read from Hitch's acclaimed work, The Trial of Henry Kissinger. Five friends of Hitch spoke via satellite in New York: satirist Christopher Buckley and editor Lewis Lapham mused on Hitch's prowess as a journalist. 'Like a pot of gold', said Lapham. Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie and James Fenton delighted the audience with stories of Hitchens as a young man. Rushdie drew roars of laughter when he recounted a word game invented by Amis and Hitchens where the word 'love' is replaced with 'hysterical sex'. Particular favourites included Hysterical Sex in the Time of Cholera and Hysterical Sex Is All You Need.
Watching the event with Hitch at his bedside in Texas, Hitch's wife Carol and novelist Ian McEwan provided an email commentary. 'His Rolls Royce mind is still purring beautifully', typed McEwan.
The event was watched live by 2500 at the venue, and by thousands more in UK cinemas and online.

The award-winning author of numerous books on comparative religion, Karen Armstrong has taken a leading role in efforts to bring the various religious groups in the world to a better understanding of each other, and has been rewarded for her interfaith efforts with the 2008 TED Prize. Armstrong discusses her 2009 book, The Case for God, making the point that compassion is at the heart of religion. Armstrong talks about her years in a convent, the differences between belief and faith, her epilepsy, and how her writing process and immersion in sacred texts sometimes produces in her a sense of awe. She maintains that the concept of God is symbolic, and states that her concept of God differs from fundamentalism, which, she says, is in some respects a modern development. Armstrong also talks about her 1984 trip to Jerusalem as a turning point in her life, and notes that each major religion has its unique genius while sharing many elements in common.

Awraham Soetendorp is currently Rabbi of the Reform Jewish Community of The Hague, and Rabbi of the Union of Dutch Reform Jewish Communities. Born in 1943 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Rabbi Soetendorp survived as a hidden child.
He asked the floor at TEDxAmsterdam to speak about the Charter of Compassion, a TEDPrize project initiated by Karen Armstrong. In his brief talk he recalled the moment in 1943 when the Gestapo and the Dutch police came to his home, and proceeded to stress his belief in the goodness of people: Compassion opens the heart, and when the heart is open it propels to hope.
His short talk moved the audience immensely and he got a standing ovation.

Hasan Askari, inter faith pioneer, responds to Karen Armstrong's engaging interview on the Sufi Mystical Experience, Whirling Dervish dance inspired by the great Sufi mystic Rumi, Zikr (Remembrance of God) The need for Religious diversity and much more.
For more on the work of Prof. Hasan Askari please visit : www.spiritualhuman.wordpress.com @Alone2Alone
Professor Syed Hasan Askari (1932-2008) an inter-faith pioneer. He figures as one of the eight important Muslim thinkers in Kenneth Cragg’s The Pen and the Faith & acknowledged in the West as an uncompromising advocate for inter-religious spirituality. He lectured-taught at several universities in India, Lebanon, Germany, Holland, Britain and the United States. He was also Louise Iliff Visiting Professor at Iliff School of Theology in Denver.
Hasan Askari was an early Muslim respondents to the Christian initiative to Dialogue figuring extensively in the study, “Striving Together in the Way of God: Muslim Participation in Christian-Muslim Dialogue” by Dr Charles Kimball who writes, “Hasan Askari is among the most active and visible Muslims engaged in interreligious dialogue. Since 1970, he has participated in numerous international and local dialogue meetings & lectured widely on various dimensions of what he terms “inter-religion”…His prominence in the field of Christian-Muslim encounter is noted by Kenneth Cragg, a pioneer and acknowledged authority in the area of Christian-Muslim relations."
Hasan Askari’s works include The Experience of Religious Diversity – co edited with the late Professor John Hick, Spiritual Quest – An Inter Religious Dimension, Towards a Spiritual Humanism – A Muslim Humanist Dialogue, Alone to Alone : From Awareness to Vision, Seers & Sages, Solomon's Ring : The Life and Teachings of a Sufi Master, Inter-Religion.
Professor Jane I Smith (formerly at Harvard Divinity School) writes, “This is the deeper dimension of interfaith conversation to which Hasan Askari calls persons of religious sensitivity, a dialogue that leads not simply to a new epistemology but to what he would call a new ontology. A long time partner in dialogue sessions sponsored through the World Council of Churches and other agencies, Askari has been a courageous and sometimes lone voice urging that conversation move to levels at which this kind of transformation indeed can take place. A philosopher, a mystic, an historian and a social scientist, Askari pleads with religious persons everywhere to transcend the limitations we have placed on ourselves and to move together to new levels of understanding.”
Hasan Askari was committed to co-presence & dialogue between diverse forms of spirituality and he emphasised the urgent need to revive the discourse on soul and promoting Spiritual Humanism as an alternative ideology. Hasan Askari's article "From Inter-religious Dialogue to Spiritual Humanism", I have always looked at religious diversity with a sense of wonder...The intuition underlying the ancient saying, "the lamps are many but the light is one," gently led me on to look for a theological affirmation and validation of more than one religion...I clearly realized that transcendental reality could not be equated with any one religious form...Each religious form should then express the beauty and the splendour, and the transcendence and the mystery, of the Supreme One...By the theological affirmation of religious diversity, our coming together in dialogue becomes akin to an act of worship, our exclusive witness is transformed into co-witness."
"As soon as you talk of the soul you talk of the whole of Humanity. There is no other conclusion." (Syed Hasan Askari)

Karen Armstrong is the former nun-cum-prolific writer. With over 20 books under her belt, she has written about the 3 major monotheistic religions in the world and works with the UN. Armstrong maintains that cross-cultural problems are not due to religion, but the practice. She talks about how religious fundamentalism started with the Christians in the U.S., spread to the Jewish faith, and has come most lately to Islam. She cautions both the Western World and the East to act not with extremism, rather with tolerance and the goal of understanding.
