The Lady Eve is a 1941 American screwball comedy film written and directed by Preston Sturges which stars Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. The film is based on a story by Monckton Hoffe about a mismatched couple who meet on board an ocean liner. In 1994, The Lady Eve was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) is a beautiful con artist. Along with her equally larcenous father, "Colonel" Harrington (Charles Coburn) and his partner Gerald (Melville Cooper), she is out to fleece rich, naive Charles Pike (Henry Fonda), the heir to the Pike Ale fortune ("The Ale That Won for Yale"). Pike is a woman-shy snake expert just returning from a year-long expedition up the Amazon. Though surrounded by ladies desperate for his attention, Charles is putty in Jean's hands.
But even the best laid plans can go astray. First, Jean falls hard for Pike and shields him from her card sharp father. Then, when Pike's suspicious minder/valet Muggsy (William Demarest) discovers the truth about her and her father, Pike dumps her. Furious at being scorned, she re-enters his life masquerading as the posh "Lady Eve Sidwich", niece of Sir Alfred McGlennan Keith (Eric Blore), another con man who's been swindling the rich folk of Connecticut. Jean is determined to torment Pike mercilessly, as she explains, "I've got some unfinished business with him—I need him like the axe needs the turkey."

Preston Sturges is at it again. The ingenious writer-director spins out a sinfully romantic comedy in The Lady Eve, and the "lady" of the title is Barbara Stanwyck. She's a calculating card shark who fleeces passengers on transatlantic ocean liners. When she discovers that an ingenious young millionaire (Henry Fonda) is on board, the scheming Stanwyck figures he'll be a pushover if she plays her cards right. Sure enough, he does fall for her, but surprise - she also falls for him. When he's tipped off that true romance is not in the cards because she's giving him a fast shuffle, Fonda's fondness fades. Now Stanwyck realizes that if she wants to win him back, she's got to stop her double-dealing and she does, but not before she turns up a few tricks of her own. "The Lady Eve has snap, crack...
In this course, MIT Professor Irving Singer gives 4 video lectures on Philosophy In Film and Other Media. This course examines works of film in relation to thematic issues of philosophical importance that also occur in other arts, particularly literature and opera. Emphasis is put on film's ability to represent and express feeling as well as cognition. Both written and cinematic works by Sturges, Shaw, Cocteau, Hitchcock, Joyce, and Bergman, among others, are considered. There are no tests or quizzes, however students write two major papers on media/philosophical research topics of their choosing.
The Old Gold Comedy Theater was an NBC anthology series that aired for the single 1944-1945 season. It was hosted by comedy star Harold Lloyd, of silent film fame, and featuring some of the biggest names from film and radio. The series was intended as a lighter version of The Lux Radio Theater, featuring half hour shows that were cut-down versions of successful comedy films from the time period. Despite Mr. Lloyd's best efforts, the presence of big-name movie and radio stars and the selection of successful films for scripting, the series did not last, perhaps due to the half-hour format. However, in today's time period they are quiet entertaining. It was also known as, The Old Gold Comedy Theater, Harold Lloyd Comedy Theater and The Comedy Theater Tonight's Comedy: The Lady Eve With: Ralp...
The Old Gold Comedy Theatre was an attempt to capitalize on a similar format. All of these programs benefited from the use of the movie stories. The name of the picture would have been familiar to listeners, and so attract audiences. Listeners also got to enjoy many more movies over the radio than they would have been able to see in their local movie palace, especially listeners for whom the movie palace was not all that local. The movie based shows were also an effective means of advertising the pictures themselves.
The Globe Theater was built in 1599 and hosted many of William Shakespeares plays and was regarded as the best place for entertainment. So the show was dubbed as the best in radio drama during it's two year run in 1944 and 1945. The program featured excellent plays and were highly regarded as the amount of listeners was astounding. The show was hosted by Herbert Marshall. Tonight's Story: The Lady Eve Original Air Date: unknown --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lennen and Mitchell ad agency wanted to produce a comedy series for Old Gold cigarettes Though the adapted scripts and the actors were top-notch, the show eventually suffered from its 30 minute format, as too much had to be cut from the original movie scripts. Lennen and Mitchell pulled the plug on the show on May 28, 1945 when they announced Meet Me at Parky's would air in its place. Currently, there are 30 of the 32 episodes still in circulation -- 29 come from the estate of Harold Lloyd, in the original un-cut version, and one from the Armed Forces Radio Service.
